ROCKIHGHHIII HIGH SCHOOL The bill chartering Rockingham Graded School was introduced in the legislature of 1901 by Cameron Morrison of Rockingham, then State Senator from Richmond County, later Governor of North Carolina, Congressman, and United States Senator from this State. The School opened in the fall of 1901, with A. B. Hill, a graduate of the State University, as Superintendent, and five teachers. There were about 20 high school pupils enrolled. In 1906, Superintendent Hill resigned and was succeeded by L. Bell, a graduate of the State University, who had served as principal during the 1902-1906 years. From this small beginning the school has made considerable progress. The high school building, on a 16-acre lot, was erected in 1922, the gymnasium and vocational building in 1941. The high school enrollment this year, grades 9-12, inclusive, is 560, with a senior class numbering 83. The high school student body largely governs itself, which is the highest type of discipline. The student government body was organized in 1923 and is a going concern today. Rockingham High has earned some State and National awards. In 1924 its football team won the State Championship, and its baseball team won the State title in 1940. In 1944, a Rockingham High girl won third place in the National Civitan Essay Contest. In 1945 another Rockingham High girl won first place in this National Civitan Essay Contest in which more than 5,000 essays were submitted. In 1945 a Rockingham team won the State-wide High School debating contest at Chapel Hill. Rockingham High boys and girls are modest, sincere, and genuine, with definite stages of character building behind them. The School and its graduates contributed a large number to the War Effort, in every branch of service and in every part of the world. Some of them will not return, but they will not be forgotten. I..
