A7 2 4 Q3 PP, I N- While fraternities have experienced new growth l and popularity in the past 9decade,their originscan be traced to the student clubs of colonial days. The most famous of frateriiities andfthe first to use Greektlet- ters was Phi Beta,Kappa,Q established at William and Mary College offWilliatnsliurg, Va. on Dec. 5, 1776. Throughout isi period, most fraternities maintained theisecifecygoftietheir societies. In 1834, however, as alprotesitbagainst the considerable in- fluence of sucbijsticieties, the social fraternity was formed. Siniilarfgorganiiations were formed and, eventuallygltheeAnti-Secret Federation came into be- ing.nIn5,1864,,ftlieifSocialFraternity changed its name toillelta Upsilonffand functioned like most other The TKE Fraternity. Fraternities Fraternities Fraternities fraternities. The fraternities were influenced, in part, by the literary societies of the early 19th century, although they later strayed to a strong emphasis of high idealism, and strong friendship, with less regard to literature. The secrecy, mottos, ritual handshakes and pins were supposed to be an embodiment of these principles. On the Rockhurst campus, Alpha Delta Gamma was the first social fraternity followed by Tau Kappa Epsilon in 1967, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon in 1972. Alpha Phi Omega, the college's only service fraterni- ty, was introduced to the campus in 1940 and became co-ed in the l970's. , we X 'X p Qes' Xa r X , , .,t. The Student Senate is the official group representing the students' point of view. Concerned primarily with student rights concerning academic and social policies, the Senate undertook many projects this year. Among these projects were proposals concerned with making improvements to the weight room, increasing handicapped accessibility on campus, and making Easter Monday a school holiday. To increase communication, the Senate held a commuter student forum and an intercollegiate student government workshop. The Senate also reviewed the constitutions of new clubs and undertook many smaller projects to make the campus a better place for its students. - President Kevin Kaul Vice President Michelle Lucero Treasurer Tom Duda Secretary Patti S tei ni nger Senators John Hartung Paul Jokerst Debbie Baniak Joe Naylor Michelle Bennett Elda de la Pena 'Keith C alcagno Marty Robbins Joe Cherrito Lisa Collins Bryan Distefano Tom Herink Chris Schloeman Lynne Schreiber Dylan Vernon Sherri Z ywiec 'Q ur 1, Q ns, 5 5 , f 'WN 4 1 i X . The Rockhurst Hawks practiced diligently in the sweltering heat of August to the snowy bitter weather of November. There were eleven open positions for anyone who wanted to work hard enough to earn one. Once the season opened the team work set in. The price of extreme heat, cold, and exaustion paid off. Not only were the Hawks nationally ranked most of the season, they played for the District 16 title as well. Several of the players earned post season honors. The team played several outstanding games including a 9-1 victory over Ottawa College, and a 4-0 victory over the Avila Avalanche during parent's weekend. The loss of the District 16 finals to Park College after beating them 2-1 eariler in the season was disappointing. As Head Coach Tony Tocco said, a team should not be judged by its last Qame but by the whole season Too often, a team is judged by its failures rather than its successes and this team had a very successful year. Senior back Joe Stephens started in all seventy-five games he played in as a Hawk. He earned a spot on the All-Midwest and All-District first teams and he was named to the All-America second team by the National Soccer Coaches' Association. He will go on to play professionally for an outdoor team, the Dallas Americans this summer. Senior forward Skip Reh also was named to the All- Midwest, All District first teams and to the All-America Second team by the National Soccer Coaches' Association. Reh finished a great career at the Rock becoming the third all-time scorer with 33 goals to his name. Rick Enna, senior back, also received post season honors. He was voted to the All-District first team. Rick graduated at the semester land began playing for the Wichita Wings, a professional indoor soccer team. Jim Ross transfered to Rockhurst from Johnson County Community College. He was named to the All-Midwest and All-District first team his first year as a Rockhurst Hawk. ' y. Democrat and former vice president Walter Mon- dale and running mate Geraldine Ferraro were defeated in every state except Minnesota, Mondalels home state. Ferraro, a House Representative for New York in the United State Congress and a noted feminist, was the first woman ever to receive a major party nomination for the vice presidency. The Republican victory was somewhat in- complete, however, in that they failed to bring in as many representatives and senators on Reaganls coat tails as the party had hoped. - Cathy Owsley WGN KX: ffm 7, GQ Qpv IPX 200 1 A A , x K I r .. 55 5 ' x fx In a historically significant libel suit, General William C. Westmoreland sued CBS television for 120 million dollars. The suit named Mike Wallace, chief correspondent, two news executives, and former CIA analyst Sam Adams, for their contribu- tions to the 1982 documentary The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception. The documentary claimed that there was a U.S. military attempt to suppress intelligence about the strength of enemy forces during the Vietnam War. The battle behind the dispute began in 1967 with the Central Intelligence Agency's report that com- munist forces numbered twice as many as had been expected. Westmoreland and other top officials claimed that the figures were unrealistic and that they included communist groups not capable of fighting. In the documentary, CBS claimed that there was a conspiracy at the highest levels of American Military Intelligence to suppress and alter critical intelQigence on the enemy in the year leading up to the Tet offensive. In a legal complaint filed by Westmoreland he said, '6The statements . . . were false, unfair, inac- curate and defamatoryl' and were made with ac- tual maliceg with knowledge that they were false, unfair, inaccurate, and defamatoryf' Westmoreland later dropped the suit. The end of the ceremony represented the close of an exciting evening for most people, but this particular January night was meant for the stars to stay out and shine. Following the awards program, 46 of the biggest stars in the music business met to begin what would turn out to be a 10-hour recording session lasting until 8 a.m. the next morning. Stars such as Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Wonder, Huey Lewis and the News, and The Pointer Sisters worked side by side and, sometimes, hand in hand to record a song that would raise money to buy food for the thousands of starving Ethiopians in Africa. Collectively, the group, United Support of Artists for Africa, U.S.A. for Africa, in short, was conducted by producer Quincy Jones. The single, entitled We Are the World was written through the combined talents of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. The 45-single version was released on March 7, 1985 and was being broadcast on radio stations nationwide by the 10th. Six days later, a seven-minute, 12-inch-album version was released. lt is estimated that over two million copies have already been sold. All of the artists donated their time, and the proceeds beyond cost will go to feed the hungry. Ninety percent of all the profits will be used to buy food for the starving Ethiopians and 10 percent will remain in the United States to feed the hungry here. - Stephanie McCann P J, ! - aw-f,w7,waa,aW4ixi Lethal Gas Poisons C ity A science fiction nightmare more than 2 500 people died and approximately 150 000 others were injured in the worst industrial accident in history the Union Carbide or Bhopal disaster Atl256am onDec 3 45 tons of methylisocyanate a chemical lethal to humans began seeping from tanks at the Union Carbide pesticide plant on the outskirts of Bhopal India The windless night and cool air dense cloud clinging to the ground drifting toward Bhopal The methylisocyanate a chemical used in pesticides was stored in underground steel tanks and refrigerated to keep it below 100 degrees F the point at which it becomes a gas Two safety mechanisms were employed in the event that the temperature rose above this point First a pressure valve would be released to keep the tanks from exploding and a scrubber would be released to neutralize the gas As a backup the gas would be ignited Through mechanical failure or human error neither of the systems worked The plant was closed down within hours of the accident and has not been reopened Company records were seized and the top officials arrested Cathy Owsley O O I , . 9 9 : . . . . , . 9 9 I 0 A , . . n allowed the chemical to form a Q , 0 9 . Not another Editor's Farewelln column! CI had to do one of these for the final issue of the Hawk, also.J But since this is my page . . . Actually, the purpose of this column is of the Gee, thanksw and look what we didi' variety. The first thing I have to say is this: for a rock, this book isn't very stable. It seems that every year this book is plagued and its very existence put in peril. Well let it be known that we innoculated the Rock this year. We have a real office to work in, and an enthusiastic, competent editor for the next book. In fact, I envy next yearis staff - they have the tools to go beyond the ordinary. Not that this book is ordinary, mind you, but it would have helped to have had more than one semester to produce the entire book. Nevertheless, we did make some substantial - improvements. For example, we fgaspj followed a theme, expanded the color section from eight to 16 pages, and revised the section on student organizations. Now for the Gee, thanks part. Gee, thanks to: Fr. Mueller, fwho I am convinced can do anythingj, Cathy Winkler Cfor unflagging commitmentj, Dan Smith Cfor printing through the nightl, Len Grinstead, Denise Wood, Ann Steffen, and Andy Apathy, S.J. Cfor a few beautiful captions and late night refreshmentsj. I would also like to thank the Hawk staff for their sometimes unknowing f X contributions. Sincerely, waawf 5 Margaret E.
