Season Practicing for his per- formance, Leon Bates turns to explain his piano . expertise. The 1983-84 Season of the Arts proved very successful once again. Six performances throughout the academic year entertained Rockhurst and local Kansas City audiences. Neill Archer Roan, a classical guitarist began the Season on October 6. Mr. Roan is frequently a guest artist with different orchestras including the Chicago String Ensemble. During his visit, he also conducted a guitar workshop in conjunction with the Kansas City Guitar Society. The Martha Graham Dance Company was the second performance of the Season on October 14 at the Folly Theater. It has been said that Martha Graham has made the single most contribution to dance in this century. The principal dancers for this performance were Jean-Louis Martin, David Hatch Walker, George White, Jr., Takako Asakawa, Terese Capucilli and Christine Dakin. The Vanaver Caravan was the third group to take the stage on November 16. The group per- formed an electrifying story of a distinctly American dance perspective born out of rich folk traditions and coming of age in the works of America's early choreographers. They also presented a special afternoon performance for area school children and dance students. The first performance of the second semester was a recital by Leon Bates, a classical pianist on January 20. Mr. Bate's performance inaugurated the College's series of events celebrating Black Awareness. A disciplined body builder and sports enthusiast, he is skilled at attracting audiences and is a favorite on college campuses. The fifth performance was a return visit by John Houseman's Acting Company on February 5. The group of sixteen highly trained actors and actresses performed Pieces of 8. This company is the nation's only permanent professional touring theatrical ensemble. The performance was a col- lection of short comedic plays with a serious overtone. The final performance of the Season was Woo- ing, Wedding and Repenting by the Oxford Chamber Theater on March 31. The couple, Diedre Barber and Arthur Kincaid, assumed a wide range of characters from plays by Shakespeare, Neal Coward and lbsen and Strindberg. 28 Season of the Arts of the rts 1 2 2 l gl 5 CTI G CDMP ON TOUR FOR THE JOHN E KENNEDY CENTER Twfwvdevwdblempunbyagmrnnm
