Brother Martin J. Hagerty, S. J. DediC3li0l1 A good and faithful servant. This is how Brother Martin J. Hagerty, better known to thousands of Rockhurst alumni and to his fellow Jesuits as Brother Pat, was described by those who knew him. Brother Hagerty died December 10, 1965, at the age of 75. He devoted 55 years of his life to the Jesuit order, spending 50 of those years at Rockhurst. Brother Pat took charge ofthe food services at Rockhurst in November of 1915. He watched Rockhurst grow from a 3-room high school accomodating 45 students to a 10-building complex servicing over 2,500 students. The seventh of nine children born to a stone mason in the parish of Ingah,CountyClare,Ire1and,he had come to the United States in 1906 at the age of 16. Brother Hagerty's duties changed little in his 50 YGUS OH the CEUTIPUS. He was in charge of refectory, served as sacristan in the chapel and awoke his fellow Jesuits at 5 o'clock each morning. Brother Pat was a man of great humility, Rarely seen outside the Jesuit residence hall, he was little known by few people of the later Rockhurst student bodies. Although rarely seen by the students, Brother Pat took great interest in them. He enjoyed nothing more than to listen to his fellow Jesuits talk of their students as he served them lunch, He followed the Rockhurst sports teams devotedly and revelled in their victories. Brother Pat enjoyed telling stories about the early days at Rockhurst when he served hot lunches to students from the community kitchen in the absence of a regular cafeteria. Brother Pat led a life which yielded few material rewards. Fame or praise, even on the campus which he served faithfully for 50 years were not his.

In Memoriam To the students at Rockhurst who knew Ray Hill, he was an intramural all-star basketball player. Better known as Ernie he was also recognized as atop- notch baseball player. Ernie was a junior at the Rock, easy going and well liked. Active as a Suzzer, hard working as the man who kept Mason-Halpin fieldhouse goingg most would- agree that you had to look pretty far to find a guy like him. Ernie gave three years of his life to the Rock, three years that ended with his death on Memorial Day in the summer after his junior year. Riding a bicycle, he was struck, injured and died the next day. No one expected it to happen, but of course no one ever does. Rockhurst will miss Ernie Hill, because some- one is always missed when he is well liked, active and friendly. We at Rockhurst will more than miss Ernieg we will remember him. He was one of us.
