Hagerty, better known to thousands of Rockhurst alumni and to his fellow Jesuits as Brother Pat, was described by those who knew him. Brother Hagerty died December 10, 1965, at the age of 75. He devoted 55 years of his life to the Jesuit order, spending 50 of those years at Rockhurst. Brother Pat took charge ofthe food services at Rockhurst in November of 1915. He watched Rockhurst grow from a 3-room high school accomodating 45 students to a 10-building complex servicing over 2,500 students. The seventh of nine children born to a stone mason in the parish of Ingah,CountyClare,Ire1and,he had come to the United States in 1906 at the age of 16. Brother Hagerty's duties changed little in his 50 YGUS OH the CEUTIPUS. He was in charge of refectory, served as sacristan in the chapel and awoke his fellow Jesuits at 5 o'clock each morning. Brother Pat was a man of great humility, Rarely seen outside the Jesuit residence hall, he was little known by few people of the later Rockhurst student bodies. Although rarely seen by the students, Brother Pat took great interest in them. He enjoyed nothing more than to listen to his fellow Jesuits talk of their students as he served them lunch, He followed the Rockhurst sports teams devotedly and revelled in their victories. Brother Pat enjoyed telling stories about the early days at Rockhurst when he served hot lunches to students from the community kitchen in the absence of a regular cafeteria. Brother Pat led a life which yielded few material rewards. Fame or praise, even on the campus which he served faithfully for 50 years were not his. In Memoriam To the students at Rockhurst who knew Ray Hill, he was an intramural all-star basketball player. Better known as Ernie he was also recognized as atop- notch baseball player. Ernie was a junior at the Rock, easy going and well liked. Active as a Suzzer, hard working as the man who kept Mason-Halpin fieldhouse goingg most would- agree that you had to look pretty far to find a guy like him. Ernie gave three years of his life to the Rock, three years that ended with his death on Memorial Day in the summer after his junior year. Riding a bicycle, he was struck, injured and died the next day. No one expected it to happen, but of course no one ever does. Rockhurst will miss Ernie Hill, because some- one is always missed when he is well liked, active and friendly. We at Rockhurst will more than miss Ernieg we will remember him. He was one of us. BACCALAUREATE The members of the class of '66 received their final blessing as Rockhurst students at the Baccalaureate Mass in St. Francis Xavier church, the morning of graduation day. Now the college looks for the blessings. Abbot Anselm Coppersmith, O.S.B., delivered the homily during the Mass, celebrated by Rev. Charles A. Nash, S.J. Abbot Coppersmith told the graduating seniors of the'trai1s that stand before them and of the help that Christ is in that march out from the walls of Rockhurst. On hand for the Mass were parents and friends of the honored gratuates. Following Baccalau- reate exercises a brunch was held in Massman Hall, for graduates and guests to refresh themselves before the long awaited commencement activities began at 3 o'c1ock that afternoon. Senior Picnic The Class of '66, in the habit of staggering on- lookers with its accomplishments, ended four years of being buried in books, extracurricular activities, and the arms of girls by celebrating in afashion that left the class members themselves staggering. The senior class picnic at Lake Jocomo seemed to offer everything the seniors wanted, and sometimes more than they could hold. The law forbidding swim- ming in the lake forced students into an improvised icy pool, for exclusive members. Sudsy showers were available to non-swimmers. There were bull sessions, even with the deang softballg card gamesg joy rides, footba11gand,ofcourse, a light-headed comedian extraordinaire, who hit when he touched down. 97 on :Z if i 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 I 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 s 1 1 1 1 ,- . , ,,..v.-.,....., ...fifh-.-7 ,--nf -1- f - . . ...., . -,......,...-...--..,,.x,---4-...ufnf--: f----W---nf - . - -. 5 . f , I wsxa ' ' 'lat ' 1 -' ' ' ' .,.1f.:.,.,. .-,Ama 1... M nv Senior Dinner Dance Despite the threat of tornados and a long, uninterrupted thunderstorm, the 1966 Senior Dinner Dance was a successful evening. About forty seniors and their dates enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere of the Mirror Lake Country Club in North Kansas City. The drearlness of a typical Midwestern spring evening was offset by the unusually delicious food and liquor. The seniors and the faculty mixed formality with the informal friendliness that has characterized the atmosphere that is Rockhurst. To the rhythmic sounds of Bob Simes and his guitar, the 1966 dinner dance gradually drifted into the past and became a memorable climax to four years at Rockhurst Kiollege, J I xp V an I 5, AL ,f, . . 4 ' ' fffffg , ' f ZW CLIFFORD JOSEPH ALEXANDER Mission, Kansas AB Philosophy Student Senate, 3,45 Philosophy Club, 3,45 President, 45 Pre-Legal Club, 2-45 Vice-President, 35 Young Democrats, 3,45 President, 3,45 Pickwick Club, 1-45 History Panel, 15HAWK, 1,25 Deans Honor Roll, 3,4. Positive arguments supplemented protests for changes in administration stands on such issues as the cut system, retreats, and compulsory Mass, The Class of '66 marched, too. They marched to publicize the groundbreaking for the new Rockhurst libraryg they marched downtown three years to the N.A.I.A. national basketball tournament, cashing in Sophomore year for the championship and reaching the quarter finals in 1963 and 1966 for a composite 78-18 record in tournament years. The soccer team finished third nationally in 1964 -- its first inter- collegiate season -- while the basketball team was in a rebuilding season. And, of course, Rockhurst's class of- '66 was restless, mixing play and studies and extracurriculars. After surviving thwacks of underclassmen for two weeks and shedding beanles, name tags and big brothers, the class of '66 responsed with a successful dance, Christmas at a Swiss Chalet. Jim Stacey was elected 120 the first of his two class presidencies preceding his year as Student Senate president ln 1964-65. The class also witnessed the birthof big-name entertainment fthe Surfriders and the New Christy Minstrelsl and the rebirth of drama t Six Characters in Search of an Author and Little Mary Sunshine b at Rockhurst in its freshman year. 1 f ,aa f a f ' f 2' ? Z jf A ,f ,L 2 fi' f f Z! X f '97 , M ,W Oh no, I think I just hurt something! '2 is '4:w,QzfsEg'xb,Q,m The sophomore year was greeted by the success- ful return of Christies and the class-sponsored dance, The Agony and the Ecstacy. Bob Maurer and Al Banfield assumed duties as editors of the Rock and the Hawk, respectively. But, there were pitfalls as the Senate failed financially in a concert with the Notre Dame glee club. After listening to the soothing violins ofthe Warren Durrett orchestra during the 1965 homecoming, the class unwound in its junior year offering the Rockhurst- strengthened Roadrlmners at the spring dance, ...A Go-Go. Tom Aziere joined Banfield at the helm of the Hawk and Chuck Koob became editor of the Tercel. Joe Rebman led the class of '66 into its senior year as president of the Student Council, while Kurt Strobach held the reins of the class. After much haggling, the Night Hawk Club opened. Fraternities became the vogue at Rockhurst as Sigma Phi Delta was initiated as a chapter of Tau How is your grip-safe? Kappa Epsilon with Stacey as president. Sigma Upsilon Zeta gained acceptance as a local chapter. Their prowess in the scholastic realm was sub- stantiated as 28 members of the class of '66 merited scholarships and fellowships to graduates schools. After four years at Rockhurst you would do the same thing. l Remember, you can't be fit as a Fiddle if you're tight as a drum. , ' aff flh - I. wg 1 Qi n , Q :wff , .A ' 4 rvwc x fwm X ., M2357 f Wf ss f 'V - 4 X A fs! Student Council This year the Student Council questioned more and more its proper sphere and scope of activity and responsibility. While managing campus events, pro- blems, and progress, it also began to expand its influence in spheres outside of the school. Questions of a more universal nature, such as civil rights and community service, were given more consideration than they have traditionally received. Of significance was the active role the Council played in the birth of a student leader group in the Kansas City Regional Council of Higher Education, and its participation in Students for Community Service. And again in its growing spirit of expanding interests and becoming involved in communal efforts, the Student Council was instrumental in the formation of the Jesuit Student Body Presidents conference. On the campus level, significant accomplishments were realized. The activity schedule of Freshman Initiation was re-directed to emphasize the goals of bettering the school and making freshman become a part of the school's growth and spirit. Also, a new atmosphere of cooperation among students, faculty, and administration was fostered by joint meetings of the Colmcil with the administration and faculty, and close work with the faculty in the development and planning of the new Course Evaluation program. This new Course Evaluation program was an improvement over its incipient stage in that the faculty became an active participant in its planning and itwas designed for IBM processing. The Council proposed a change in the Constitution which will increase the number of Student Council members to include not only the presidents of each class but class vice-presidents and secretary-- treasurers as well. , 1 If lv in 4 A W 2 yy N K w S i i. As the social arm of the Council, however, the Senate planned little entertainment for the school year other than mixers. Mixers on the whole were better than in past years, primarily because bands were hired for most of them. Big name entertainment was considered but no feasible method of financing it could be found until the second semester. In the end only expenses could be made off the New Society concert. The Student Senate spent most of the year dis- cussing a student night club, the Nite Hawk, which opened at the end of the year with not much success. If the Nite Hawk does succeed in the future, then the work of this year's Senate will not have been in vain. The club was a good idea, and though the few crowds that it did serve were not large, they did enjoy themselves. A complete evaluation of this year's Senate will have to made in the future, ....... -.-.................,..-ui-,.V.,.Y- .. , ,,,, ,,. ..-.,,.,..-.,i...v.....--,.........-4, . ,. . 112 Damn machine. ., rw, Hi, Knick. The Hawk An All-Catholic rating by the Catholic Press association got The Hawk off to another good year, as the paper was judged excellent over all. The survey showed The Hawk scored high as a leader of Catholic action since the staff recognized an integration of religion with other school activities. The Hawk tried to emphasize school government more, hoping to present to the students the importance of a student-ran campus, The role of the campus in the community also received thorough coverage, as the newspaper delved into the role of student government in both national and moral issues. The Hawk took a critical view of the Student Council's decision not to take a stand on the Civil Right's issue, raised when a Rockhurst student was ordered out of a local barber- shop. Meetings of the Council with the administration were also challenged when the meetings did not seem to accomplish anything. A proposed student court, the questioning of academic freedom, and a suggestion for more controversial topics in campus lecture pro- grams were all discussed in The Hawk, For its outstanding editorial policy the paper re- ceived a First Class rating from the Associated Collegiate press, a critical service which rates college newspapers. The A.C.P. reviewer said The Hawk was a solid paper with editorial strength, and added, Your editorials are the paper's strength --thoughtful and mature, well-written. A new and fresh look was given to the editorial page with the addition of editorial cartoons from the hand of John Abbick. The A.C.P. cited them for special recognition as being well drawn and thoughtful. 5 2 i 'Au ,lj S , ,ff A ' ag ft. 415' Qt. .--1'-ft- ' g: wn. N , f L. 4 A I r 1 l L' 1 i 1 1 . The Tercel Growth and experimentation marked the most successful year in the history of Tercel, the campus magazine. A record staff of nineteen critics, including for the first time four freshmen, piloted 44 student manuscripts into print in the Winter and Spring editions. Tercel awards, cash prizes for the best published work in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, were re-insti- tuted after a three-year lapse. A faculty judging committee voted the 1965-66 awards to Jim Randall, Chuck Koob and Bob Mahon. Randa11's short story Chicken Cotton also merited first place in the annual Intercollegiate Young Writers' contest. Under the imaginative and witty leadership of moderator Mrs. Dorothy Wright, Tercel gave its Sedwick office a complete facelifting, The redecorated room is furnished with a staff library, art supplies, and an array of drawing boards and T-squares for the hectic nights of paste-up and assembly, A striking and popular innovation was the use of photography both in cover design and interior in the Spring issue. Perhaps even more popular was the new reduced student rate for Tercel and a corresponding doubling of circulation among Rockhurst readers. Economics Club The Rockhurst campus this year saw the second successful year of the Economics Club. The club, which is intended for economics majors only, was revived last year under the direction of Dr. Bryce Jones. Meetings were centered around discussions of various articles and books that pertained to the economy or to society in general. First the book or article was reviewed by one' member of the club, Thena discussion would follow. These books and articles brought up many interesting problems and objections not only to the book or article itself but to society in general. The idea for a club of this sort came from Dr. Jones who joined the Rockhurst Economics Department last year, Dr, Jones had been moderator of such a club before coming to Rockhurst. 34 32 - ' -I - -9........:uL.xi:.s::.:.:,:,h...'..LL--Qy.:.4-1::.,Q.4.--le----, Y.-, . .-,-..- .V . . . , H. Young Democrats Student political activity on the Rockhurst cam- pus was heated in a non-election year, suggesting that campus political clubs were preparing for increased activity in the pending congressional elections. The Rockhurst Young Democrats assumed a significant place among colleges of the state. This was due almost entirely to the initiative of Clifford Alexander, Lmder whose leadership the club gained a considerable membership. The climax of the year was the participation of seven Young Democrats in the Missouri Inter- collegiate State legislature in Jefferson City. This is a completely student-run state government which is an invaluable experience in the operation of our political system. The Rockhurst Sodality, an enthusiastic group of Rockhurst men, has become the organization its name signifies. A sense of fellowship among the members evolved this year, as well as unity, due to projects like the movie program, and song fests with the rest of the student body. Off campus, too, the influence of the Sodality was felt, as members promoted interest in poverty programs throughout the Kansas City area. Participa- tion in the student tutorial program and individual efforts benefiting the underprivileged developed even more in the past year. In the city, also, the Sodality has bettered inter-student communications with active organizations at -various schools. The members look to even better means of applying Christianity tocollege life. The highpoint of the year's activities was an informal discussion with John W. Oliver, federal district judge, who has also served as a state bar examiner. Judge Oliver answered questions not only about the bar examination but also about academic curriculum that would best prepare a student for law school and the eventual bar exams. Toward the end of the school term the group discussed the possibilities of obtaining a chapter of a national pre-legal fraternity. This was probably due not only to the natural excitement of the game but also to its general growing popularity, More people in the area than ever before were curious about how soccer was going at the Rock. Of course increased understanding of the rules of the game made it more interesting thereby helping it acquire a larger- following, My Kee Notes was responsible for letting the average student in on those all-important fundamentals, as Ed McKee devoted one of his popular columns to explaining the game. Adding to the interest was the general feeling that this would be a championship-team-year at the Rock, since the kickers had come so close the year before. Even though the national title did elude the team, interest was sustained throughout the year making the season seem short indeed. A new one-time innovation was the night match against St. Benedict's college at the end of the season, The excitement of a playoff game linked with the crisp night air of O'Hara stadium brought back many memories of old football days. That certain I don't care how cold it is feeling permeated the stadium giving athletic life at the Rock that football feeling for the first time in quite a while. Rockhurst has been having its growing pains but the future looks bright if the present trends continue. The possibility of more night matches and a wider knowledge of the fundamentals can only help to increase the popularity of the sport, That ever present gap between the beginning of school and basketball season is slowly closing and soon Rockhurst will have its own schedule of fall sports, just as exciting and just as enthusiastically supported as any of the football teams at area colleges. The Rockhurst soccer team of 1965 opened its hopeful championship season in early October with an upset loss at the hands of Tabor college, 2-1. After the Hawk kickers had broken on top on Mike Morrell's first period penalty kick, Tabor tied the game in the second quarter. The third quarter was scoreless, but midway through the last period a penalty kick gave Tabor the lead and the victory. The decision was later reversed and given to Rockhurst by forfeit because Tabor used an ineligible player. 157 The Hawks first victory of the season was at Park, 6-1. Goals were scored by Frank Lipski 431, Randy Galt, Geoff Melchior and Mike Morrell. But in their first home game of the season, the Hawks dropped a 3-2 decision to St. Benedict's. The Ravens drew first blood, but Rockhurst quickly bounced back as Melchior scored on a pass from Lipski. As the second period neared an end, the Ravens scored on a penalty kick and an outside shot to lead, 3-1, and although Galt tightened the game with a third period goal, the Hawks were lmable to turn the threat into victory. In the second meeting of the traditional rivals a week later, Rockhurst returned to the winning ways. At the same time the Hawks spoiled St. Benedict's perfect record by downing their Atchison hosts, 2-1. Goals were scored by Galt and Freshman, Mike Tucker, That same week, Rockhurst went into two overtimes , but couldn't break a 1-1 tie with pesky Tabor college. The Hawk goal was scoredon ahead shot by Randy Galt. Two days later undefeated Quincy college visited Kansas City, but left defeated as the Hawk klckers beat them, 3-2. Lipski scored twice for Rockhurst, with Melchior adding a third score. This was the beginning of Rockhurst's five game winning streak. ' The Rock crushed Park college, 8-0 in its next game, which was the high total for the season. Freshman Mike Riley scored three times for the kickers. Two days later the boosters downed Ottawa university, 3-1. Lipski led in the scoring with two goals as Galt scored one. After downing Ottawa for a second time, 7-2, the Hawks won a berth in the Quincy playoffs by blanklng St. Benedict's 4-0 at O'Hara stadium. Senior Galt led the Rock with a pair of goals. In the semi-finals of the Quincy play-offs, Earlham college fInd.j defeated Rockhurst, 1-0. The klckers closed their 9-2-1 season at Quincy on November 20, by beating Berea college fKy.l. Rockhurst college baseball fans had little to cheer about during the 1966 season as the Hawks, after an auspicious debut, went into a prolonged nosedive and finished the season with a 6-18-1 mark, Fifteen of the 22 members of the Rockhurst team were freshmen and the Hawks' inexperience became pain- fully evident as the season progressed. Less than half of the opposition's runs were earned and failure to hit with men on base marked many defeats. K Not that the season was without thrills. The pitching of Jim Sarcone and George Ellis, a Rockhurst triple play, and the late-season fence-busting of George Kopp caused ripples of excitement from time to time but victories far too scarce and too often the good was obscured bya muddle of miscues, Jim Sarcone got the Hawks off on the right foot, April 1, by pitching a 1-hit shutout against Pittsburg State. But Rockhurst gave an indication of things to come when it lost the second game of the double-header, 8-4. The Hawks still showed signs of promise in their second double-header. They lost the opener, 4-3, to Drury despite Joe Fahey's 14 strikeouts, but won the second contest, 6-2, over Evangel. Ellis pitched a 3-hitter in that one, fanning 15, It was an losing battle from there. Springfield State dumped Rockhurst twice, 11-4 and 2-1, and after a rainout of a double-header with Bethany, Maryville State dropped the Hawks in the first game of a twin-bill, 5-1. Sarcone stopped the Hawks losing streak at three with his second brilliant pitching effort, striking out 11, in a 4-O second game victory. Rockhurst went into another tailspin, dropping its next five games, First the Hawks lost a double-header to Omaha, 5-1 and 3-2, then Parsons swept atwin-bill from Rockhurst, 15-2 and 15-6. 1 if up 1 ..MrA M g ,f f f , 4. ,, fe ,-M., I X' , ,' mf x , ff f JM? 1 V, f .5f'5Afw:f .N W7 Aff- , zu' ' K X f 4, ,ff Q45-R-, .Z , Zi w 14 111, X bk. if sf' X gi 'ie w 1 f ff 7::fn,1u'. . Tom O'Connell's pass gave a 12-6 triumph to the Scrubs. In the final game the Goldfingers, in a 12-6 loss, drew first blood on a deflected Gary Kloster to Bob Redmond aerial, good for 40 yards. With only three plays left in the game and a fourth down situation, a pass by Tom O'Connell was tipped into Phil Hage1's arms for a 15-yard score, sending the championship into overtime. In a 35-play sudden-death play-off, O'Connell and Dave Buchmueller combined for a short TD flip and the championship for the senior Scrubs. To make it to the play-offs, the Scrubs had to upend last year's cham- pions, the Unknowns, and they did so by a 6-0 count. The Blue league hadaninteresting oddity in that two of its teams were unscored upon, the champion Gold- fingers and runner-up Golden Dorks. However, besides a scoreless dead-lock between the two, the Dorks also tied the Shooting Beavers. in K, xx s M S'XflT3'ATf3'Z'?TCT'i?T?'1 F 'YU-Ti'iiif.fTFfim?f37P? 1 W f? f A 1 xx QQ' ,, . Only three teams remained in each league at the close of the season, It was planned that the winners of each circuit tangle in a best-of-three series to determine the champion, But, because the season had been shortened by rain, the championship round was limited to one game. In the Blue League the Normals concluded their regulation play first and awaited the winner of the GDl-3- Sigma Phi Delta game. While ln the White League the SUZ waited to face the winner of the Faculty- Cavalairs game. The Normals ended up winning the Blue League and thus prepared to face the Faculty who successfully won over the Cavalairs and SUZ, In a tight ball game the Normals showed the same ability they had all year. In defeating the faculty the Normals now stand as the 1966 softball champions. It is hoped that next year's season will bring better weatherg that's the same hope held over from last year. .4 ,A 5, ff.
