PIERRE ALDIN Elrihntv A YO E liebu-Ude DUINDE ' gefiq 'SITE 5, nueonnuN Billkellis mo V Bezirk Bremen: Ge' A TRIBUTE TO ROCKHURST We are in Rockhurst College, four, students from over the seas. Although far away from the lands we love, we are happy to study here, for it is with admirable kindness, and without any regard to our social origin or material wealth that you have opened to us the gates of this institution and of our new life. Be-fore entering this powerful country, we had heard of your dams and of your oil fields, we had heard of your cars and of your machines. Today on,Iy, we realize that, above all, the culture of human values is dear to, noble Americans, not a dogmatic culture, nor a sly abuse of per- suasion, but an intelligent and generous guidance. We have been guided too, here at Rockhurst, we have been helped in every oct and every day. Never have we asked in vain for counsel or assistance, and rarely had we to ask. Never did we fee-I that your college is a part of a world in which we are strangers. But you have made it for you and for us a home of generosity and of faith, faith in our daily life and faith in the country which gives us this life. g We are proud to be students at your college, and it is with the simplicity of gratefulness, that we thank you. Combining a membership totaling over ninety per-cent of Rockhurst students and one-hundred per-centxof St. Teresa student, the group has been instrumental in the good showing of the Rockhurst basketball team the last two seasons. Not only at home but at games on the road as well, the Pep Club has been well represented. A homecoming, absent from the campus since I949, once again has been made a part of the school's activities. Miss Mary Lou George, a sophmore student at the College of St. Teresa, was chosen homecoming queen by the student body. Her attendants, also sophmore students at C. S. From it springs the personal sanctification of its m-embers and of all whom it can possibly affect. To accomplish this personal sanctifi- cation, the Sodality fosters in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through the year the Sodality sponsored daily rosary, a monthly holy hour, and at Christmastime a special collection for the poor. And at the weekly meetings of the group, methods for the spiritual advancement of the Sodalists were discussed. O'Connor, the Glee Club, often combined with the vocal talents of St. Theresa's College, reached new heights in musical performances. Its repertoire extended from pop tunes and light opera to early church polyphony and exerpts from grand opera. Christmas week was filled with many performances: St. Peter's PTA Christmas party, Rockhurst Circle, student body, radio broadcast. over KCMO, and a concert at St. Teresa's at which there was a standing-r0Qm- only crowd. Other concerts included the St. Teresa's music festival, annual spring concert, oratorical concert, and graduation ceremonies. mmsmefui. nwuwf.e.se.1'. ' si CI ii 2 cr: n ' B. :iw-----. s. Mm-f. But since these people are very rarely obtained some of the students take it upon themselves to give speeches in Spanish. X fi A Members of the winning intramural team, Leo's Boys, smile happily for the cameraman after defeating the defending titlists, Sam's Bays, 55-35 last Friday evening. They are top row left to right: Paul Lillig, Coach, Jack Colvin, Tom 0'Shea, captain, and Keeth Jones. Bottom row left to Jim Bill Mesmer, Phil Jackson and Jack Forge. Battle under the cords. 104 Ii ifiewkvthall Sam's Boys, aperennial intramural en- trant, sought a second basketball crown in as many years. Their opponents, Leo's Boys, comparative newcomers to the intramural scene, changed any aspirations for glory that Sam's Boys had by trouncing them 55-35. After a first half which saw them leading by only six points, Leo's Boys put on a torrid show in the final two stanzas with Keeth Jones and Phil Jackson, the Ieague's high scorers, countering 22 points in those quarters to spark the new crown wearers. Leo's Boys, sponsored by a friendly Kansas tavern owner, scored 31 while holding their opponents to l7 points in the last half to sew up this year's title. The tavern team opened up slowly as Phil Jackson hit two from the field and Bill Mesmer chipped in with a bucket which gave them a 6-4 advantage at the end of the quarter., They warm-ed to the task in the second quarter as Valley Forge hit seven of the l8 points as they widened the gap to six points. After the half, the Sam's Boys shooters, who were hot in the second quarter, cooled off and made things easier for Leo's Boys, who played steady and consistent ball to sew up the title. He conceived and established un influence for thc greater glory of God which has contributed. to the progress of civilization for over 4111 years. We'helieve in an education that develops the mind, the body and the soul. This is the expression ol the founder, the Reverend Father Michael P. Dowling, SJ. This his the Creed 'to which ROCKHURST lias adhered all these years. Tliis is the ideal it has followed.-to exalt man to his highest earthly estate-lo attain knowledge strengthened by character-huilding and righteousness. It is an ideal held high through the centuries . . . the spirit of the Ratio Studiorum, a body of rules and regulations .formulated in 1599 by early Jesuit scholars. who luraved persecution, poverty and plague to hring the light ol Christian Learning to a boisterous, henighted world. This is llie system followed at ROCKHURST -- a system used in all tlie sclioqls ol tlie Society of Jesus-llie order founded by St. lgnaiius Loyola in l534. Over 25.000 memlmers .- priests, scliolastics and lmrotliers- are today toiling AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM .. lor the greater glory of God. ' Tlius it is that no Old World institution offers ideals higher, means more practical, or scholastic requirements more punctilious, than ROCKHURST COLLEGE. Although a young institution, the secular and religious knowledge of its educators is boundless, for it has lieen gleaned hy hundreds of years of experience with Man and study of the Holy Word. The ROCKHURST CREED is indeed a guarantee of an education which imparts wisdom and culture as well as academic knowledge. 5'-'E :-gas:-'1wr H'-'rye-I'-'sv-'r , . .-.. . , ... ...rw f- Q- .'-..-'H ' .ve . The true Christian, product of Christian Education, is the supernatural man who thinks, judges and acts constantly and consistently in accordance with right reason illuminecl hy the supernatural light ofthe example and teaching of Christ: in other words, to use the current term, the true and finished man of character. For it is not every lcincl of consistency and firmness of conduct based on subjective principles that makes true character, but only constancy in following the eternal principies of justice . . . And on the other hand, there cannot be full 'justice except in giving to God what is due to God, as the true Christian does. Pope Pius Xl, Encyclioul on Christian Education.
