Late September brought to the stage four plays: Submerged, Jimmy Valentine Reforms, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and Aesop's Fables. RHS and Sion students teamed up in early December to present: The Lady and the Tiger, Passioella and The Apple Tree. Mr. Jerry Stark said, The talent level this year has been very high and that is matched by the guys doing it. It's real exciting to work with students that are eager and enthusiastic. This season boasted many new faces on stage and will be a positive influence for the coming year. Special recognition should go to three seniors who have participated in the drama program at RHS for four years. The evening began with a silent auction. These items included Kings, Royals, and Comets tickets. Among the larger items at this year's auction were: a 1984 Corvette, five fur coats, a topaz diamond ring, and a trip to London. This year A1 Markle (Father's Club president) and Harry McLear were the general chairmen and John Massman, Sr. was the Solicitation Chairman. To add to the generosity of the evening, 50 Rockhurst students waited tables at the dinner which preceeded the oral auction. All told, the alumni returned home to RHS for good times fond memories. ALUMNII27 MISSION POSSIBLE WEEK For five days during the month of March, the Rockhurst students faculty combined efforts to raise money for the Jesuit missions in Central America. Fr. Ray Pease, S.J. a missionary from Honduras joined the RHS community for the week of activities. Fr. Pease conducted the opening Monday prayer service to begin the week and he celebrated the all-school mass the following Friday. Each of the classes organized activities for a given day. The seniors sponsored the auction which raised 1,954.00 Wednesday of mission week, the girls from Sion and St. Teresa's joined in the volleyball tournaments sponsored by the frosh which collected 845.00. Thursday, the junior class conducted their version of Monopoly with life-size pieces which brought in 576.00 and the sophomore sponsored best dressed man mixer on Saturday collected 1,678.00. Along with various collections a total of 5,588.00 was raised for the Jesuit missions in Central America. Bill Lonergan (JR) in a low-cut evening Dior makes Monopoly game fun for all. Some RHS seniors and girls from St. Teresa's were seen boarding the Tilt-A-Whirl, tux, corsage, and all before making the prom scene. Someone won at this just last year. CARNIVAL 33 THE WORD The Pastoral department took charge of organizing the masses and prayer services for the 1983-84 school year. These masses helped to deepen the faith life of the students and faculty. Whether it be at the start of Freshman year, or the last few weeks of Senior year, the chapel and all-school masses remained the center of life at Rockhurst during the four years and after. Fr. Knapp performs The blessing of ashes at the all-school Ash Wednesday service to begin Lent. 34 MASSES MASSESI35 CHRIST'S PRESENCE The Pastoral department under the direction of Fr. James Knapp, S.J. and Mr. Larry Ruby were responsible for setting the positive tenor of the school's spiritual life. Through their accomplishments of organizing retreats, masses, and prayer services, the Rockhurst community as a whole was led to a more profound understanding of His presence in each of our lives and our interactions with each other. Nick DiCicco, S.J. at St. John's Seminary); 7 three day Junior retreats (directed by faculty teams given at Savior of the World, Conception, White House in St. Louis); Optional Senior retreats. These retreats provided the students an opportunity to learn more about themselves, each other, and their God. 'MEN FOR OTHERS' Each year Rockhurst seniors spend the first three weeks of the second semester in a variety of social service educational sites working with individuals who have special needs. The 1984 Senior Projects program involved the participation of 189 seniors who worked in a total of 65 different agencies in the K.C. area. Senior Projects provide a time of personal growth for each senior. He is exposed to new situations which help him to grow into a more caring, giving, loving person. Some of the goals of Senior Projects are: to increase the senior's awareness appreciation of the needs of those around him; to develop in the senior a desire commitment to help those who are especially in need of his love and concern. Perhaps the benefits of Senior Projects could be summed up by one of the seniors: I worked with a 16 year old boy named Mark for over an hour writing 10 simple sentences correctly. His determination the smile on his face after finishing was reward enough. I am glad I had an opportunity to teach them something. If only they knew what they had taught me ... As usual, the Stuco year began very early in the summer. Members met on a weekly basis to plan activities and make important pre-school decisions. In addition to attending summer meetings, many of this year's members attended student council camps. The year's activities were kicked off by the annual Blue-White Mixer. Next came the magazine sale. Thanks to student support, the sale was able to raise enough money to fund the entire year's activities. Without the traditional Homecoming Parade and float-building, Stuco sponsored a pre-Homecoming field day. Among the activities were chariot races, arm wrestling, field goal kicking, and a tug-of-war. Stuco gave a Christmas present to the student body this year, giving free cokes and candy canes as the Christmas break approached. Stuco also helped with the Back-to-School Night and 8th Grade Visitation Night. As in years past, the Student Council sponsored Mission Possible Week after the return from the Christmas break. Activities included a Monopoly game, an auction, a volleyball game, and the Mission Possible Mixer. Stuco also provided workers and assistance to the Sale-O and Carnival efforts this year. The list of activities came to an end with a Council sponsored Spring Dance and the Blood Mobile. 46'dTUilr., CHOIR ENRICHES ALL The liturgical choir for the 1983-1984 school year was responsible for all the music and instrumentals played at any of the all-school masses during the year. Many long hours of practice went into making the liturgies a more prayerful experience for all. The choir chose their own music and often times listened to the original album or score to get an idea of how it was to be performed. The majority of the music this year's choir chose was originally written and sung by The St. Louis Jesuits. This original group of six jesuits met during their philosophy studies in St. Louis and there started writing and singing their own music. Over a period of time, they became known worldwide, and are now considered the driving force in contemporary liturgical music in the Church. This year's choir was enriched by many students who were instrumentally talented. Pat Ludwokowski provided piano and vocals; David Lombardo played guitar and sang; Dan Sulit played piano; Jim Koetting played guitar; Jim Caccamo, Bill Hudson, Michael Hennessey, and John Kelley. Mr. Dennis Kirchoff, S.J. organized and directed the choir, as he has done for the last few years. The Rockhurst community have all benefited from his efforts and enthusiasm in this regard. Dave Barry prepares for a solo at all-school liturgy. SADD HAS PRESENCE POINT The Rockhurst chapter of Students Against Driving Drunk (S.A.D.D.) accomplished a great deal in six short months. Sponsored by the National Honor Society, SADD managed to gain support from the student body and the Rockhurst community through a special all-school assembly in April. This support was demonstrated by the collection of over eighty signed student-parent Contracts for Life,” in which students and parents promised each other not to drive drunk. SADD also sponsored many optional after-school programs to educate students about the effects of alcohol on driving and hosted the first annual summer convention for Kansas City area SADD chapters. PADRE'S POTTERS ... This was a bumper crop year for the RHS pottery department. Rockhurst took 25% of the National Scholastic Pottery awards in the four-state area. Dan Stoltz won one gold key and Mike Scalora was awarded with seven. Dan's entry was sent to New York for the national competition. In all there were about thirty wheel pottery students and thirty more hand builders. All of the senior wheel pottery students made mugs to be sold at the Mission Possible auction. The students raised almost $300 for the missions. The students also took a field trip to the Nelson Art Gallery. PASSIONATELY PARTAKE POTTERY 51 YOUNG DEBATERS FAIR WELL The 1983-1984 Speech and Debate Squad, under the fine coaching of Don Ramsey, was young considering the fact that there was only one upperclassman. The sophomores and freshmen showed incredible success for their year. The returning debaters were junior Mike Burger and sophomores Jim Daniels, Brian Pendland, Scott Schudy, and Chris Sulzer. In July of 1983, seven sophomores and upcoming freshman Steven Gromowsky traveled to Waco, Texas to attend the Baylor Debate Workshop. The team of Schudy-Sulzer placed fourth in regular debate. The team of Daniels-Pendland did very well in the national competition. At the first tournament of the year, Schudy and Sulzer continued their success with a fourth place win at Kickapoo High School. Sulzer showed his individual event skills by finishing in second place in extemporaneous speaking. The debate team of Jamie Elmore and Venu Reddy, both first year debaters, took third place at Neosho High School. In February, sophomore Kurt Plumer joined the team by participating in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Plumer performed exceptionally well by advancing four rounds at District competition. Other sophomores consisted of Jeff Bresette, Bill Hudson, Peter Gromowsky, and Chris Muehlberger. The four main freshmen on the squad were Jeff Beshoner, Shawn Dickey, Martin Fanning, and Frank Tyler. The 1983-1984 year closed with Schudy taking second in the State Lincoln-Douglas Competition. 52ISPEECH DEBATE ORGAN,7 AT,ONW YELL-LEADERS BRING SPIRIT The 1983-1984 school year was a great year for the Yell-Leading program at Rockhurst. The program itself was on shakey ground due to the performance of last year's members; yet, Mr. Ros-coe Dickison was willing to become the moderator for the program. He was helpful in arranging practices, obtaining equipment, and in obtaining instruction for the Yell-Leaders. The football Yell-Leading squad consisted of ten original members: captain Peter Collins, co-captain Ed Boyle, Paul Bruening, Aaron Bruns, Chuck Dunlay, Luke Lobb, Mark McGurren, Phil Moreano, John Pfiefauf, and Dan Sulit. Near the end of the season, Karl Kuckelman joined the squad. Most of the Yell-Leaders accompanied the team to St. Louis where the State 5A Championship was won. When the football season closed, only two of the original members decided to cheer for basketball. They were Aaron Bruns and Dan Sulit. However, Jim Calderon, John Lillis, and Michael J. Hennessey soon signed up. What the basketball team actually needed was any student bodies in the Rockhurst stands, and with the continual, subtle persuasion of Mike Hennessey and Mark Reintjes, the bleachers soon became packed with students. This year turned out to be a very good year for the Yell-Leading program. In danger of being dropped, the program endured and its members proved that the Yell-Leaders are a truly important aspect of Rockhurst athletics. 56 YELL-LEADERS Never a dull moment with Michael J. YELL-LEADERS 157 GOSUB COMPUTER CLUB 83-84: RETURN 5SI COMPUTER CLUB The 1984 Computer Club continued to be successful in its second year of existence. This is largely due to the work of Mr. John McEniry who was always there to offer his help to the members both old and new. The club is sure to enjoy further success as computers become an integral part of our modern lives. Mr. McEniry commends the Whiz kid. Not many people can catch a fish with an Apple. Light and Sound Crew The Light and Sound Crew has survived another year. As always, there were many problems that struck when they were least expected. But, the Crew also pulled off many difficult feats spectacularly. The mass during Freshman Retreat, Cache, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, and the NHS mixer all showed the ability of the Crew to form a reality based on someone's wishful thinking; a task which at times stretched the Crew to its limits and often required the help of many other students. Much of the year was spent making the systems easier to use. This included rewiring parts of Carnival and Sale-O-Rama and writing a manual to explain the systems. Overall, this year was very productive. Unknown to many people, the Light and Sound Crew was involved in almost every event this year. Once again the light and sound crew make a Rockhurst function possible. LIGHT AND SOUND 59 ROCK COLLECTION The work for this year's Rock Collection began in early September when Paul Angles and Peter Collins were named Co-Editors-in-Chief. The staff was busy right away; attending workshops at Universal Press Syndicate and thinking up a new and original cover design. Once this task was accomplished, the staff then began to wade through the hundreds of submissions which began to swamp the Rock Collection office. It was quite a challange to decide upon the few works which could be published in this year's edition. Through the tasks of creating the dummy and finishing the layout, the staff worked together in order to meet the many deadlines which faced them. Then, on May 9th, the staff's hard work and dedication was rewarded vhen this year's edition was delivered and distrib-ited to the student body. Steps Heaven up. Nevertheless, they managed to produce one of the finest papers in the state as indicated by a 97-100 All-Missouri ranking. Through twelve editions, the Prep News covered everything from the new head football coach to The Day After to the U.S. Bishops. As one teacher commented, the Prep News has provided spicy fare for its readers. A conservative editorial page which lauded nuclear deference and questioned the practices of the U.S. Bishops certainly stirred up some controversy. The editors were content to know that someone out there was reading the paper. Throughout the year, their triumphs were many. They can be attributed to: John Sinovic, Editor-in-Chief; Kevin Odrowski, Managing Editor; Richard Graham, Sports Editor; Tim Mullen, News Editor; Joe Taschler, Feature Editor; Michael Dorrian, Photo Editor. Sean Cahill, Steve Traxler, and Joe Barloon were also instrumental in producing the award-winning paper. Several individuals on the staff excelled at state competition for their articles. They were John Sinovic, Kevin Odrowski, Joe Taschler, and John Pazell. 621 PREP NEWS Prep News receives their share of awards. PREP NEWS 63 1984 QUARRY The 1984 Quarry staff attempted to capture the moments of the year that will live in the hearts of Rockhurst students for years to come. From the 1983 Show-Me-Bowl, to Senior Projects to the Mission Possible auction with multi-talented services of Col. Jack Callahan, the staff has tried to keep their finger on the pulse of the school. Under the watchful eye and guidance of Mr. Gregg Grovenburg, S.J. the staff has met deadlines, drawn layouts but most importantly the staff had loads of fun. Editors-in-Chief were Jim Taylor and Pat Kaine. Section editors were Grant Beck, J.D. McEnroe, Sean Phelan, John Richart, Scott Schudy, Wally Roy and Tom Wandless. Many other people were involved in the yearbook also, and this yearbook couldn't have been done without their help. ROCKHURST HIGH SCHOOL at SPORTS 66 SPORTS SPORTS 167 RHS Football Reigns 1 State football championships and Rockhurst go hand in hand. For three straight years, the Hawklets have found their way to the Missouri state finals. Determined not to repeat last year's disaster, Rockhurst used a swarming defense to hold Hazelwood Central in check and win its third state title, 13-10. The odds were against Rockhurst to be in the state game. Not only had starters graduated but there would be a new coach for the 1983 season. Coach Tony Severino came to Rockhurst from building a very successful program at Shawnee Mission Northwest. Coach Sev set high goals and he built on the pride he found at Rockhurst. In St. Louis after 14 games he stood with his team and let everyone know who was number one. Rockhurst played the toughest schedule in the state. The first six opponents were undefeated at the time of their game with the Hawklets. Not only was Hazelwood ranked No. 1 going into the title game but so were Miege and SM West in Kansas; and Lincoln East in Nebraska. RHS only losses were to SM West, 3-0, and to Columbia Hickman, 12-7. The playoffs were marked by wins over Lee's Summit and Grandview. Then receivers Kendall Smith and Jimmy Griggs led RHS to a dramatic 13-10 semifinal victory over St. Louis U-High in the Jesuit Bowl, leading up to the ultimate win at state. M. Lewis, V. Long, M. Coached by Phil King and Eric Berg, the JV compiled outstanding offensive and defensive stats. Their opponents scored 20 points and the Hawklets totaled up 132 points in the season. The JV was led this year by a very strong back-field consisting of Mike Holmes, Pat Looney, and Michael Johnson. The JV defense was also a contributing factor to their great success, led by defensive back Vince Long. The JV won their first three games and only gave up one touchdown. The JV lost its first game in a 37-game winning streak to SM West, losing 14-7. After these losses they won every other game they played. Head Coach Steve Ryan sighted that receiver Rich Wilson, fullback Jon Schmidt, and guard Pat Miller all stood out on offense. Safety Tony Totta, Schmidt at defensive back, and Miller as a defensive lineman all stood out on defense. Ryan also mentioned Jay Wright as having a good season. The offense was plagued all year by turnovers, penalties, and other mistakes. Ryan commented, Our passing game did well, but injuries took their toll. With new stars and excellent talent, the A team finished with a 7-0 record. The B team had a record of 4-2. Coaches Pat McDermott and Don Hack guided the teams. McDermott was really impressed with the team. Both teams had lots of talent and lots of enthusiasm and worked hard, said Coach McDermott. They have to continue to improve themselves through participation in other sports and off-season weight training programs. The A team had a very good season. They opened the season with a 28-2 trouncing of Center. They also beat up a tough Wyandotte team 27-0 towards the end of the season. New talent seemed to be the highlight of this years season. The leading scorer on the team was Junior Wally Roy. Sophomore Brian Didier also put in an exceptional season of play. The top four runners on the team were all underclassmen, juniors Matt Blake, Tom Spencer, and sophomore Jim Barthol. These underclassmen were led by senior captain Mike Hennessey. The highlights of the year were finishing first at both the Ward and Westport Invitationals. Coach Bill Munnighoff stated, We had an outstanding year; we placed in the top one-third at every meet this year. The 83 Hawklets were led by seniors Kendall Smith and Jim Vader, as well as leading scorer, sophomore Harold Mitchem. The Hawklets went into the season with high hopes. They were improved, with greater depth, quickness and height. But this was not the year for the Hawklets. The first game of the year ipitomized the entire season, as RHS lost in the final seconds on missed freethrows to Paseo, 53-50. The year would be full of near misses for the cagers, as 13 of their 26 games would be decided by four points or less. The Hawklets competition, as always was some of the toughest in the city, playing such tradition powerhouses as Paseo, Central, Wyandotte and Raytown South, as well as new talent S.M. South and Blue Springs. The team also traveled to St. Joseph for the La Blond tournament, where they met such teams as Lincoln East and La Blond. The Hawklets also played in two other tournaments, at Blue Springs and North Kansas City. Leading the Hawklets on the statistic sheet was sophomore sensation Harold Mitchem. He lead nearly every offensive category, including points scored and average. But on the court the Hawklets were led by senior guard Jim Vader, who was the sparkplug to the offense leading RHS in steals and running the Coach Bruce offense. Also contributing to the cause was another senior, Kendall Smith. Kendall started the season slow on account of his football heroics, but was not far behind Mitchem in the offensive stats, and always causing havoc for the opponent. Row I: ]. Taschler, . Wenzl. S. The squad started slow, but soon made steady improvements that lasted through the season, and ended in a 500 record. The Hawklets were very young this year. Two members stand out on the 12-man team: freshman Mike Masucci and John Cooper. Juniors Mike Ertz, team leader in practices and Dave Schwarz, in charge of setting up the offense and ball handling, were key players as the team progressed. Other outstanding players including Mike Holmes, Dan Keller, Jim Sheedy, Dan Teahan, and Jack Sullivan worked hard together leading the younger players and rounding out the Hawklet forces. Roto I: M. BASKETBALL Sophomores Peak, 13-7 The sophomores had a great season this year, and capping it off was a four game winning streak with their last victory coming 68-43 over S.M. East. The purpose of sophomore basketball is to stress fundamentals and to do it with a winning attitude. We especially had to stress that with this year's team, said Coach Bill Munninghoff. Because last year's team as freshman lost, it has been great to see the turn around. All in all, its been a very exciting season for the sophomores. They came back and beat many opponents that had already defeated them. They lost just over half their games but they are proud to have worked hard. Their season was a rollercoaster ride, but they will be ready for next years season. Row 1: M. Nash, S. Bessenbacher, K. Barthol, P. Kennedy, D. Cray, M. Dugan. Row 2: ]. Brosnahan, C. Lewellen, . Head Coach Eric Berg stated that, “This team was strong fundamentally and did the little things well. That made a difference. RHS' schedule, which traditionally plays some of the strong schools in the K.C. area, beat both Raytown and Miege twice this year, and also defeated Wyandotte. Like the A team, the Frosh B-basketball team finished a strong 9-1 record. Their only loss coming at the hands of O'Hara. I was very pleased about the season, said Coach Mike Larson. They played very well and turned in some really good games. The best was the 49-48 OT win over Raytown South. According to Larson, this team could have beaten a lot of A teams. B. Harper, S. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL 93 Four Varsity Grapplers Go To State The 1984 season was a season of mixed reviews for the Rockhurst Wrestling team. Success came with victories in the Rockhurst Quad and the Rus-kin Quad; and success came with four grapplers qualifying for the state tournament. The season, however, had its down side. With no victories in the state tournament and disappointing finishes in other tourneys. The Truman Tournament was no exception. Rockhurst was rated, for the first time. The 9-2 dual record was good enough to put the Hawklets in the top ten, in the Metro Area Top Teams. The state district did put a damper on the season with Rob Aubin, John Weidmaer and Jim Paolozzi missing the district meet. The chances for the Hawklets winning a trophy there was dimmed. However, Jason Goscha, Tony Cordes, Chris Hodes, Jack Hensel and Pete Sierant all qualified for the sectionals. Cordes, Goscha, Hodes and Sierant went on to compete in the state meet. Coach Dennis Bullard was extremely pleased with the progress of the Hawklets in 1984. The four qualifiers represented the largest number of people Rockhurst has placed in the state competitions. Tradition is still being developed in the relatively young sport at Rockhurst. The season was rough and many injuries were weathered, but the Hawklet grapplers proved tough and did their best. Coached by Pat McDermot and Don Haack, this team was one of the strongest teams in some time. They performed well during their tough season and faired well against Winnetonka and Lee's Summit two strong teams in the area. Some future Rockhurst wrestlers will come from the JV level. Their fine work is shown by many outstanding wrestlers such as, Mike Ohmes, Tony Hodes, Chris Hodes, Rob Popper, Bill Lonergan, John Schmitz, Dave Stoltz, and Greg Newbaurer. These and other JV wrestlers are the backbone for future teams. The JV hopes for a continuing excellence. Row 1: S. Phelan, . Beil, R. Popper. C. Gessler, B. Nash, M. Donnely, S. Atwell. Row 2: P. Coach Haack said, The purpose of freshman wrestling is to get the kids interested in wrestling and then teach the basics of the sport. The basics were successful for the team this year. The freshman compiling a 2-1 record demonstrated the basics in winning more than half of their meets. Coach Haack explained that this year the team didn't have as much experience as some other teams, but this is made up for by the enthusiasm of the many interested wrestlers. In his first year of coaching at RHS, Coach Haack feels that it is not tough to coach here. He states, The program is really well organized and Mr. Bullard does a good job. Senior Lester Ratcliff qualified in the 100 and 200 meter dash, and the 400 meter relay team consisting of Griggs, Ratcliff, and juniors Tim Coppinger and Mike Ertz qualified for state competition. Some of the toughest competition from around the area and state joined in the Rockhurst relays on April 13. The meet was won by state contender, Raytown H.S. The overall track squad was helped by individual performances by John Budde (discus shot), J.D. McEnroe (pole vault). Matt Blake and Tom Spencer (mile and two mile runs). Next year should prove to be a good year as the underclassmen were given classic performances to match. The 1984 track squad is to be commended for their hard work and performance. (front row l-r) T. Rockhurst defeated the defending state champions, DeSmet Jesuit H.S. of St. Louis and a host of other teams. Some highlights of the year consist of the Fort Osage tournament in which RHS finished first out of 17 teams. Also, Rockhurst dominated district play at the Hillcrest Country Club. The hawklets, led by seniors John Sinovic (70), Pat Hanrahan (73), and Matt Holmes (74), totaled 296 as a squad on the par 72 course. William Jewell held its 26th annual high school golf tournament with 35 schools from across both Missouri and Kansas competing in the event held May 23. Rockhurst was the defending champion after the scores were totaled, the Rockhurst golfers had won their sixth title in past eight years. This year's golf team is to be commended for their superior play and consistent spirit to play as well as they were capable of playing. 104 GOLF (SI Al t CHAMPIONS 1984) STATE CLASS! Led by sophomore sensations Pat Looney and Warren McDonald, the RHS tennis team finished the year with another trip to Columbia. Rob Aubin and David Zahorsky provided the balance for a strong tennis season, and J.J. Montanaro was a stabilizing and dynamic fifth man. After impressive showings at district play, both doubles teams ran in to tough competition from the St. Louis schools in Columbia. We started forming friendships that will last forever. One event which sped up this process was freshmen rec. night. But the one single event which brought about our unity was the Freshmen Retreat. It was to take up a weekend that no one was really excited about, but the Seniors and Juniors who planned it made it special and fun for us. The fall of 1983 brought a brand new beginning. The Sophomores were now a full part of the Rockhurst community having completed their Freshman year. However, it was not a usual beginning for the Sophomore class. The Class of '86 surprised everyone by its' incredible spirit. The class took an early lead in the Spirit Contest, and it appeared they would have the victory for the first time in twenty years. Also, the class showed its' excellence in the first semester grades with over fifty percent of the class receiving honors. The year appeared more rewarding the next semester when they did it again. 1983-84 will always be memorable in that it was unique. The year proved that the Class of '86 is a special class in everything they accomplish, and everything they will accomplish.
