(tOCKHUHST poWUMJ-LE AW 2 Dedication Rockhurst High School, in this year of 1954, has entered upon a new era. A vast expansion program is now in progress, making possible the education of many more Catholic men. In the past every Rockhurst student has prayed to Mary, Seat of Wisdom, for help and guidance. She in turn, has graciously interceded for us in our many studies. We the Seniors of 1954, pray that she will help us and guide us in the future as she has done in the past. We also pray that she will watch over every Rockhurst student in the years to come, in this new era, as she has watched over Rockhurst students in the past. We, the graduating class of 1954, therefore offer up this, our yearbook, The Chancellor, as a lasting tribute to Mary, Seat of Wisdom, for her unceasing help and unfaltering guidance. 4 Faculty V The end of a perfect day Administration President Very Reverend M. He is only about five feet in height and is handicapped by a load of books under each arm; but does this scareour brave hero? No! He fights his way through these merciless men each day. He is pounded on, shouted at, and finds himself in Jug each night. Yet he somehow manages to survive the first year with only a few dents made in his ignorance by these slave drivers. After this first year of initiation he becomes a sophomore. It is his turn to sell elevator passes and steam heated lockers to the freshmen. He is no longer beaten and down trodden. He has proven his strength and courage by leaving behind him a trail of exhausted Jebs. He is now a high and mighty junior who on the days when the seniors are off has the run of the school. He has now become a loyal, hard working, studious individual. His respect for the Jesuits has blossomed into the fullest bloom. He no longer calls them monsters, but he now refers to them as directors of the workers (slave drivers). But the stubbornness and determination of the blackrobes has left its mark. Try as he might, some of the to him useless knowledge has seeped into his skull. Then just as the Jesuits seem to be getting the best, he is rescued by summer vacation and is given new strength to come back as a senior to drive the next crop of Jebs nuts. 24 John Allegri John Arena James Arens Charles Augenstein Frank Barkofske Samuel Barnes Thomas Becker Robert Bentley Joseph Bilello Richard Bishop Brien Boggess John Borkowski Edward Boyle Daniel Bray Thomas Brewster Richard Campbell Jerome Carey Alpha Carter Michael Carvan John Casey Joseph Chanslor Thomas Cleary Richard Comboy Terry Conway Kay Cowan Chatten Cowherd Michael DeHaemer Edward Dolson Terry Dunn Lawrence Ebner 25 Michael Ernst Edward Fago Thomas Fahy Salvatore Fasone John Fiorella Victor Fontana Herman Frietsch John Frye Jerome Fugate John Gainey Thomas Grace John Hadel John Hager Randolph Harris Robert Hauber Richard Higgins Thomas Higgins Alex Himmelberg William Hoffman John Horn Bernard Horn-Bostel Lawrence Hughes Thomas Hughes John Huppe John Jester William Jolley James Joyce David Kamp Patrick Keating Michael Keller 26 Patrick Keller Joseph Kenny Andrew Klein Jerome Koehler Vincent Koehler John Kramer Richard Kramer Jerome Krause Robert Kuchem Dale Lally Michael Lillis John Looney James Lopp Richard McCarthy Terry McKee Michael McNamara Donald Madden Matt Madden Sean Maguire Frank Mangiaracina Edward Mehrer George Messina Robert Miller Michael Moley John Morrissey Francis Muehlbach Maurice Naughton William Noyes James O'Donnell Edward O'Malley 27 John Pollock Donald Powell Joseph Purcell John Quastler Michael Reardon Joseph Redmond Robert Reece Terry Reidy Joseph Reitz Michael Rice Barrett Ryan Roger Ryan John Saladino John Schibi Paul Schweiger Jared Sere Donald Smith Roxie Smith Gerald Stack Thomas Stack Joseph Steffen Edward Stephens Sherman Stokes Walter Thomas W. Bernert, Principal Rockhurst High School 5225 Troost Avenue Kansas City, Missouri Dear Fr. Bernert: After a thorough study of the sophomore students of your school, my associates and I have come to the following conclusions: 1 The average sophomore devotes too much time to his studies and not enough time to girls and other extra-extra-curricular activities. 2. The average sophomore is quick to form opinions of his teachers and fellow students, but is slow in his willingness to express these opinions, especially when in the presence of teachers. 3. The average sophomore has an abnormal love of school. 4. The average sophomore has not realized his ambitions, but is seriously contemplating them. 5. The average sopnomore is trustworthy. 6. On the subject of food, the average sophomore either has no taste or has a castiron stomach. These conclusions have been reached on a careful study, based on the following questions asked of your sophomores: 1. What are your main interests ? Latin, Geometry, History, and English. 2. What is your opinion of these interests? The least, to say the most. 3. What is your opinion of your teachers? They are the kindest, most gentle, sweetest men I have ever met. (The students that made this answer are now under my personal supervision. ) 4. Do you smoke, drink ? Never, never, well, hardly ever. 5. What is your main ambition? Heh, heh, heh. 6. Does your conduct merit you special attention by the principal? Did my parents send you to see me? 7. Do you like Rockhurst? I could if I would, or I would if I could. 8. Do you think Rockhurst should be co-ed? It would be an interesting experiment. 9. Do you think that the problems brought out at the Tri-Council meetings pertain to you ? Are you sure my parents didn't send you to see me? With the compiling of these statistics my job is finished. If you will take my suggestion, I believe that you should come to the Institute yourself for an examination, for your contact with these students might have caused you considerable mental anguish. In closing I wish you good health and my psychopathic regards. 29 30 Richard Allin Thomas Ash Enos Axtell Jerome Bacon Joseph Barnes Alfred Basile Lawrence Bauman William Becker James Bernhardt Thomas Bowles Patrick Boyle Keith Brooke Spencer Brown Martin Burke Kenneth Byrne Maurice Carey Raymond Clarke Stephen Connor Danial Corrigan Walter Cox Bernard Craig John Dalton James Daly Phillip Daniels Bernard Degan Terry Derr James Devona Lawrence Dierks Luke Dlaba 1 Ronald Dorner Michael Draney Thomas Duke John Carl Dunn John Patrick Dunn Tim Eagan Frank Enna Robert Faltermeier William Farren Daniel Ferritor Gary Ficken Samuel Fiorella Daniel Fisher George Fisher Roger Fithen James Flanagan Donald Foster John Franzen James George Byron Gidley James Gilbert Daniel Gist Thomas Glenn Joseph Gubera George Hager George Harriman James Healy William Helm Danial Hogarty Ronald Holscher Thomas Hudgens 31 John Hueser David Johnson Michael Juricak Thomas Kelley John Kiernan Pierce Lawless Jerry Lechtenberg John McClurg Thomas McGurren Michael McKimmey Ralph McMurray Terrence McNerney Michael Malooly Frank Mandl John J. Y. Rev. R. A. Bernert, Principal Rockhurst High School 5225 Troost Avenue Kansas City, Mo. In answer to your request that our offices find the reasons as to why a young man would wish to come to your fair institution, we have called in the most recent of your inductees, those being the freshman class of 1953. We asked them this one question: Why did you enroll at Rockhurst High School. The replies were varied and many, but we have chosen the ones which in our lines of reasoning are the most intelligent, most reasonable, and finally which were most original. For reasons of safeguarding the welfare of these students we have used aliases. Mr. Noa Vale said, Having heard much of the reputation of this fine institution I was forced by my father to beat a path to its door and drink in the knowledge which is handed out by these blackrobes. In answer to the query as to what his father did, he replied, He is the best pick-pocket in town. Any person who comes to the Rock is looked upon in awe and wonderment: awe, why did you go there and wonderment at why did you stay. That enlightening statement was spoken by Mr. Fineas T. Bumshoe. And yet another comment was registered by an eager Rock freshman, Mr. Joseph Blow. This school was the closest to my humble abode. Therefore I won't have to walk so far. Mr. Guyelmis Wormershaker gave forth with this comment, I heard that Rockhurst has automatic elevators, upholstered chairs, a fifth floor swimming pool, and that tea and crumpets are served every Tuesday and Friday at 3:00 in the study hall by the esteemed principal. We asked him for the name of the person who told him of these marvelous accommodations, and he stated, Some senior. Mr. Abachombie Phafufnich was proded into this statement, I came because I wanted to get a good education? If you would be influenced by these various and sundry reasons, Father, we would be happy to hear of the results. You will not have to invite us to come to your school, we will be able to hear the collapse of the school from our downtown offices. In closing then I wish you and your staff a speedy recovery from your present wounds suffered at the hands of these aforementioned men. Jovially yours Dr. Frank N. The four senior debaters have merited the highest degree in the National Forensic League, the Degree of Distinction. The debate department has also organized the first Rockhurst High School Invitational Tournament. Finally, Rockhurst received its highest honor in speech activities thus far: in the year of 1953-1954, the Rockhurst chapter was recognized as the leading chapter of the N. F. L. in Missouri. The chapter has 85 N. F.L. degrees, thereby ranking as one of the top chapters in the United States. The Missouri District News proclaims, Rockhurst and two other schools kept us (the Missouri District of the N. F. L.) from slipping farther in the district standings. Mr. Walter G. Nesbit, S. J. Rockhurst's speech team has again proven itself to one of the most noteworthy activities of the year. Its members have gained valuable experience in public speaking that they will carry with them for years to come. The divisions in which these budding orators participated were: humorous and serious declamation; original and non-original oratory; poetry reading; radio; extemporaneous speaking; and student congress. Under the coaching of Fr. Stanley E. Kalamaja, S. J. and Mr. Edwin F. Falteisek, S. J. , the speech team battled its way through numerous inter - scholastic speech meets and established itself as one of the finest teams in Missouri. 1 Speak for Democracy Winner: O'Brien Junior-Senior Apologetics Contest Winners: Miller and Lacour American Legion Oratory Winner: Lorenz 45 Yearbook Staff Seated: Stull, Bombeck, Keary, E. In most yearbooks, an average reader might see the following quotation, the hardworking year -book staff. But the fact of the matter is that most of the time this ah-hum staff sits around, smoking, with their feet on the table, supposedly thinking of ideas and gimmicks to make this year's yearbook the best and the most unusual of any published here at Rockhurst. Realizing this fact, we hope that you will enjoy the result of many bushels of cigarette ashes and tired brains. PASTE - UP 46 First Semester Student Council: Seated: Hartigan, Lacour, Hassett, J. Each homeroom has elected one member to represent it, so that every section is assured of a voice in school decisions. Another new departure is the separation of the functions of the Student Council from those of the Sodality. The Student Council meets with Father Bernertonce a week, if possible, to discuss school problems and activities. Their work has been well received by the student body, as evidenced by the co-operation of all concerned on the homecoming dance. Second Semester Student Council: First Row: Scroggins, O'Toole. It has long been recognized by the moderators of the various organizations around the school that one of the best ways to get the student body interested in something is to call for some signs from the Cartoonist Guild. This group makes the signs that you see hung on the bulletin boards advertising everything from school spirit to making a good retreat. No small part of the credit for improving the student interest in the basketball games goes to these men. Supervised by Fr. The activities of parents' clubs are considered a definite factor in the scholastic achievements of the school. In addition, the Fathers' Club annually takes an active part in the Television Raffle, which nets a sizable amount for the intramural sports fund. With their officers, pictured on this page, these men have performed admirably on behalf of their sons. Members of both clubs regularly hear talks on various phases of Rockhurst's academic and extra-curricular program. Besides just listening, they may enter into panel discussions with the faculty and their sons, as at the Tri-Council meeting in December of 1953. After these talks or discussions, the parents discuss their sons' progress with the instructors. Page Sponsor: State Avenue Mercantile Co. Watch the toes ! BASKETBALL Although hampered by a lack of height, the Hawklets proved themselves outstanding players and worthy members of a Rockhurst team. The season this year was marked by accurate shooting and aggressive rebounding, especially by George, Colwell, Pleimann, and Farrell. Cooke, the peoples' choice, and Dougherty, Mehrer, and Perkins, showed their fine ability at ball handling. Coach Ryan thinks the boys gave their best and that their spirit was outstanding. Valuable experience, he said, was gained by all--espec-ially by Campbell, Moore, Lewis, and Jester, who are returning next year. Congratulations go to the student body for their enthusiastic support and to Purcell and McGuire for their fine management of the team. 62 63 Don Dierks 5 7 F orward Pete Dougherty 5'9 F orward Grrrrr 64 . This is borne out by the record of the industry as reported by the National Safety Council. For the three years, 1948 through 1951, inter-city for-hire petroleum carriers had an accident ratio of 1.21 per 100,000 miles. This compares with a ratio of 2. 49 for all motor vehicles. To make this record possible the For-Hire Tank Truck Industry spends large sums each year for driver training, equipment design, inspection, maintenance, road patrol, and other safety activities.
