Uv • By BOB PENDERGA{| Lima News Staff Writer ROCtfFORp — CarucLout by red and white men in 1817, this Community is today the oldest Urban area in Mercer ( itit$ Only nature had to be quelled here, for earliest records ind cate that a spirit of brotherhood! existed among the trappers and Indians. A half Ottawa Indian.' Anthony Shane, was the father of Rockford as it came to be knofwi after 1880 when the post office intervened in a village election. The townfolks indicated then that of two names, Lacine and Rockford, they liked the former. But the post office officials re to accept anything but the present community name and so it remained. min 1 j Shane, with the help of a government land grant agreed to by friendly Indians, who had known the site as an Indian camp and later as a trading post, charted its streets and early building sites. Here the St. Marys River passes and men coming after the founders laid down intersecting Ohio Routes 118 and 117 and US 33. Today %on this site, which has grown to be the home of 1200 persons forming a community, of fine homes and stores, with six churches and two industries flourishing, there is a feeling that the strong bond of brotherhood has been Rockford’s greatest and most lasting heritage.
