Uv • By BOB PENDERGA{| Lima News Staff Writer ROCtfFORp — CarucLout by red and white men in 1817, this Community is today the oldest Urban area in Mercer ( itit$ Only nature had to be quelled here, for earliest records ind cate that a spirit of brotherhood! existed among the trappers and Indians. A half Ottawa Indian.' Anthony Shane, was the father of Rockford as it came to be knofwi after 1880 when the post office intervened in a village election. The townfolks indicated then that of two names, Lacine and Rockford, they liked the former. But the post office officials re to accept anything but the present community name and so it remained. min 1 j Shane, with the help of a government land grant agreed to by friendly Indians, who had known the site as an Indian camp and later as a trading post, charted its streets and early building sites. Here the St. Marys River passes and men coming after the founders laid down intersecting Ohio Routes 118 and 117 and US 33. Today %on this site, which has grown to be the home of 1200 persons forming a community, of fine homes and stores, with six churches and two industries flourishing, there is a feeling that the strong bond of brotherhood has been Rockford’s greatest and most lasting heritage. Ten years have passed since graduation. Finding ourselves in a reminiscent mood, we journey back to Rockford, Ohio, a town now large enough to be placed on the map. As we enter the city limits we listen closely - - yes, we hear church bells softly chiming in the distance. We command the taxi driver, whom we had discovered was Ken Sommers, to deliver us to this church. Upon entering we recognize the minister, Rev. Thomas Perl. After servicos Claudia Koontz, now secretary for the Donald E. Johnson Chemicals, Inc., points out familiar faces we had spotted in the congregation. There is Jim Stewart, a world famous cosmotologist, with his personal assistant, Suzanne Turney. To our left stands Rod Farmer, the most prosperous farmer in Ohio, with hie chauffeur, Darrel Winscott. Also present is Gary Fox, Owner and operator of the Fox Garage, who has working under him Jim Lehman, Marvin Shindeldecker, and Gary Granger. Again we spot a familiar face - - yes. It's Diane Taylor, an agent for the Wilson-Williams Insurance Corporation. We later learned that Nancy Williams is the receptionist and that Mary Haver is the stenographer for this firm. As the church grounds clear and noon approaches we decide to go into town to dine. On our way, we pass the Rockford Memorial Hospital. Here we discovered were Dr. Stephen Binkley and his secretary, Judy Stevens. Head nurse is Nancy King, and her cohorts are Sharon Fleming, Connie Felver, Cathy Miller, Anita Rhoades, and Mary Miller. The very able lab technician is Janet Shindeldecker, who is assisted by Karen Thatcher. As we pass the Rockford Public School, we discover t.hat Mr. Granger is now superintendent as Mr. Schlatter has advanced to the position of County Superintendent of Schools. Some of the teachers under their direction are Jonell Lloyd and Judy Bricker in the elementary department, Joyce Deitsch as teacher of foreign languages, and Jack Lee, history teacher. We hear that the team has had a very good season this year losing only one game. The coach is none other than Duane Bollenbacher. The school secretary is Marilyn Frahm and head custodian is Jim Evans. As we pass the school, a large neon sign with the words Brumbaugh Electric catches our eye. Smaller letters tell us that Gary Brumbaugh is the proprietor. Under his direction are the grease monkeys , Dean Yocum, Marlin Miller, and Lowell Gehm. Two buildings down we spot the Reed - Bery Klipper . Could this be ------ yes, it's none other than Dick Reed and Ron Shinabery, the town barbers, trimming the hair of Gary Snyder, the newly-elected Mayor, and Nick Winkler, the Chief of Police. We decide to dine at the Cocktail Lounge of the Edward Pfister Hotel. The manager happens to be Keith Figley, head waiter is Dempsey Marsee, and the chef is Jim Strete. As a termination of our journey seems inevitable, we discover that all the members of the Graduating Class of I960 have been accounted for and all are awaiting, with great expecta tions, the future years. - - Carol Prove! and Rose Belna Editors LIFE magazine CLASS HISTORY As we approach the end of our high school education, we pause to recall the Incidents and highlights of our high school years ---- the good things and bad, the work, the play. In a few years we shall be widely separated, some of us never seeing each other again, but we shall always oarry fond memories of our olass, faculty, underclassmen, and school. To lead our class we chose Keith Fig-ley, president; Tom Perl, vice-president; Gary Snyder, secretary; Ed Pfister, assisstant secretary; and Gary Fox and Judy Bricker, student council representatives. Oonnie Felver was our homecoming attendant. In January the band members with frostbitten toes and noses paid tribute to the newly elected Ohio governor by marching in the Inaugural Parade at Oolumbus. Their alternates were Gary Brumbaugh and Joyce Deitech. The local Prince of Peace contest was won by Cathy Miller. Duane Bollenbacher and Gary Brumbaugh, Don Johnson and Tom Perl, Jonell Lloyd and Anita Rhoades, and Janet Shindeldecker and Cathy Miller entered their chemistry projects in the Wittenberg Science Fair. We selected mint green and silver as our olass colors and chose the red and white carnation as our class flower. Our class will always be remembered for its mottoi Together we stick; divided, we're stuck. We ended a very active junior year with one of the most beautiful proms ever to be given at Rockford High School. Ita unique theme Mardi Gras featured a festive flair of which we were all very proud. Forty-eight seasoned seniors launched into their final year sponsored by Mr. Jerrold Cory and led by President Larry Williams, Vice-President Duane Bollenbacher, Secretary-treasurer Rose Belna, and student council representatives Judy Bricker, Joyce Deitech,, Oonnie Felver, and Don Johnson. The Betty Orocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award was won by Jonell Lloyd. Cathy Miller won both the local and county Prince of Peace contests and placed second in the district oontest.
