CLASS PROPHECY It all happened one day in labe We were working on our physics project. It was a Fue turascope . After all the hours of work we had put in on it, at last it's almost done. Now to test ite I cautiously closed the switch. The lights blinked, the screen flashed, and then- Numbers flashed across the po renencloS0e1 2 1960.5 -Gle tubes. Onre eOleeeOGes 19693 The pic-= ture fades out, then another picture comes on. We are speeding up the road toward a city. As we come closer we see the city limits ry ae It SAYS 95 sy it's Rockford! We cruise around town a little until we come to an old familiar sight. It's old R.H.S.! It seems to be considerably larger. Ae we grow near, we see someone coming down the front walk. Why, It's Mr. Granger. We rush over to talk to him. He tells ue that he's now the Superintendent since Mr. Schlatter was elected Mayor. Mr. Granger invites us in to meet his staff. Most of the teachers are new since The Rockford University opened. Most of our old teachers are teaching there. As we go through the halls, we see John Runyan-the science teach- er, Oarl Swander-history teacher, Tom Ransbottom-industrial arts teacher, and Roger Penn-math teacher. Mr. Granger aleo tells us that Oonnie Rhoades is the school secretary, and that Connie Secrest is the head cook in the cafeteria. We bump into Dave Binkley who is heed cus- todian. He offers to show us around town. Slowly we drive down the main street. We notice many familiar names. One is “David A. Koch-Attorney-at-Law'. Dave Binkley tells us Jean Bolenbaugh is his secretary. Dave also says that now Mr. Koch is defending Jerry Strete for walking on the grass in the city park. His case goes before Judge Grieshop today. Jerry was arrested by Sergeant Dennis Dull of the Rock- ford Police. Other familiar names appear: “Roberta Beams' Beauty Salon (Dave says that Sharon Gep- hart works for Roberta), Davis Trucking Company, Felver's Garage, and Gibson's Music Store. In front of the Rockford Star office Dave tells us to stop. He has some business with the editor, Mark Rutledge. Just then Virginia Thatcher walks by. We start talking to her, and she bee pect to show us some of the new buildings around town. Our first stop is the new courthouse. As we tour the courthouse, Virginia points out different offices. Some are: William Fritzinger-District Attorney, Marilyn Seiple-Child Guidance Counsel, Gale Shaffer-County Truant Officer, and Keith Kable-local recruiting officer for the Army. Our next stop is the Riverside Hospital. As we're driving there, Virginia tells us that most of the new buildings were designed by Jonathan Binkley and built by the Jamieson Con- etruction Company. Just then we pass the ineurance companye It is operated by Larry Hawk, and Betty Grossnickle is his secretary. We arrive at the hospital. Virginia says she is on her way to work from her lunch hour. Her boss, Conley Marsee fired Janet Zizelman last week for being late for work. We say good= bye and hurry up the hospital walk. The first person we see is Grace Anspach. She is a doctor now. She offers to have her head nurse, Jeanne Shindeldecker, show us around. We go upstairs where we see Carolyn Shaffer. She is also a nurse. She has just come out of Linda Plerstorff's room. Linda is a famous singer and Dr. Anspach has just removed her tonsils. We next go to the hospital lab where we see lab technician, George Van Gundy, hard at work. Visiting hours are over, 80 we say fare- well. As we leave the hospital we find we are hungry. We drive around until we come to Carr's Pizza Parlor. We go ine We discover that Nancy Carr owns it and that Don Tindall is the head pizza maker. We spy Bonnie Brehm sitting in a booth. We join her. She tells us she works at Kettering's which is Rockford's leading department store. Madam Kay Kettering is the owner. Jim Bollenbacher is the manager. After eating we decide to take a walk up the street. A cab goes speeding by. We recognize Jim Marbaugh driving it. On the side of the cab it says Eischen Cab Company. In the back seat of the cab we see Marilyn Barber, a prominent citizen. We stroll on down the street until we come to an appliance shop. Inside we find Ralph Miller, the owner and operator. He turns on one of his TV sets for us to see the local station. The news is on, and much to our surprise, the announcer is Lowell Beougher. Following the news is the social corner with Joan Fisher. It's almost closing time so we must be on our way. On the corner is a paper boy, 80 we buy a copy of the Rockford Star to get the latest news. The headline is: URANIUM FOUND IN ROCKFORD! As we read along we find it was discovered by Carolyn Schmidt in the back yard of her motel. Another interesting item is that play-boy, Jerry Rutledge, has been seen a great deal recently in some of the night spots with actress, Janice Hertel. Other articles are: Stewardess Mary Lou Emerson is now flying in Europe: Tom Emans is now playing pro football: the Navy has stationed James Provci in Washington now: and in the farm news we see that county agent, Larry Sapp, has selected John Hileman's farm as the most prosperous in the county. The time has come for us to be on our way. We have accounted for everyone in the class of '59 except the old class president, George Weinman. When we stop at Felver's Garage to get fuel, we question Sonny about him. Sonny tells us that after George won a million dollars in the irish Sweepstakes he left on a trip around the world. We pay our final respects to Rockford and start on our waye Suddenly everything goes dark, followed by a flash of light. We rub our eyes. Why, we're back in the lab. Our mechine ie black and smoking. It's completely ruined, beyond repair. Had it really worked, or was thie all only a dream? There's no way to find out. I guess we'll just have to wait until 1969 and find out. —-Mary E. Winscott CLASS HISTORY As we approach the climax of our secondary education--our graduation--we not only are prophesying our futures, but also are pondering our past period of instruction which has help- ed to prepare us more capably for our future careers in life. We have collected a short his- Bry, of our class in order that when we look back at our ROCKET several years from now, we can still recall and relive the incidents and hi-lights of our years within the halls of Rockford High School. Going back to our freshman year, we find that our class was composed of fifty-seven mem bere and was sponsored by Mr. Ned Boohere Our president, George Weinman, Vice-president, Jim Grieshop, secretary, Jerry Luth, and treasurers, Dave Koch and John Runyan made up the cabinet of officers. In the spring we toured the National Cash Register Company and the Frigidaire Company. Mary Eichar was our Homecoming attendant. George Weinman, Kay Kettering, and Bonnie Brehm headed the sophomore class composed of fifty-eight members. JoAnn Trisel represented our class as attendant to the queen at the Homecoming activities. We visited the Proctor and Gamble Company for our class trip. The Latin II class visited the St. Charles Seminary at Carthagena. Aleo the several members played in the high school band for the Governor's inauguration at Columbus--with half froz en feet. Mr. Granger sponsored our active junior year and again we elected George Weinman presidente The officers serving with him were Dave Koch and Bonnie Brehm Kay Kettering was elected our Homecoming attendant. For our junior class play we enacted The Moon on a Platter . Our prom portrayed an “Enchanted Evening . We selected ice blue and white as our class colors, the white baby mm as our class flower, and “Ever forward; never backward was chosen as our class mottoe We again journeyed to Dayton, but this time we visited Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for our clase trip. The chemistry class visited the Lima Oil Refinery. Several chemistry students earned superior ratings at the first Science Fair held at Rockford. Also John Runyan received a first place rating in the state in the chemis scholarship test. Mark Rutledge and Kay Kettering qualified to take a college freshman English course which was held at Celina, Ohio. George Weinman and Carolyn Shaffer were elected to represent the school at Buckeye Boys and Girle' State. Bonnie Brehm attended the Y=-Teen Camp.
