I, Kenny Zizelman, will my dimples when I smile to Mr, Booher, Compiled by Glenda Winkler CLASS PROPHECY Yes, it ' s 1968, .ajid the time hae come for me to leave my lawyer ' s dealc for my yearly plan- et-hopping spree, I decided to travel by first-class jet airliner; naturally,, I chose for my pilot Larry Snyder, the first man to fly a plane to Mara, Upon entering tiie ship, I was greeted by the hostess, Jill Fox. When I found my seat, I discovered that I would be sitting next to one of my former classmates at Old Rock High, Tom Sidsnbender, who was now an inter-planetary ambassador. He was traveling with hie valet, Jerry Provcl. I settled down for a lengthy reminiscence. Boss told me that many of our classmates had made names for themselves in the modern world. He was going to visit Hubert Eichenauer,, who had achieved the title of being the world ' s first billionaire, and who now owned the whole plan- et of Pluto. He also told me that Martha Miller and Glendola Yahn were co-managers of the Ei- chenauer household. When I arrived on Mars, I was given a hearty welcome by Charley Koontz, Governor of Mars. His chauffeur looked quite familiarj Chuck told me that he was one of my classmates, Kenny Zizelman. One of the Governor ' s other employees was Nancy Rogers, who was teacher and nurse to his children. As I bid farewell to my genial host and left Mars for SatUm, I glanced at the name of my ship, the Clarknik, and decided to investigate the matter further.. Sure enough, the designer and engineer of this vehicle was none oliier than Bob Clark. Surprise of surprises, as I sat down, I noticed that my seatmate was Glenda Winkler. She informed me that she was now the on- the-spot reporter for The Saturn Pattern, and was returning to her home planet after writing a story about Janet Evans, one of the famous Mars Stare.? The other member of this noted pair was Dave Miller, who accompanied Miss Evans in her solos. I was enlightened that another pair from our class in the musical world were Virginia Barber and Shirley VanTilburg, members of the Venus All Girl Orchestra. Glenda was chatting away about Connie Henkle, who was married to a Space Patrolman and was the mother of the world ' s first pair of Satumese twins. As I de- scended the ramp, I greeted Sara Emans, who was the chief dietician on the Clarknik. I had missed her on board, because her assistant, Marlene Henkle, had been the one who served the meals. After considerable difficulty, I finally hailed a taxi. You guessed it — the driver was another ' 58 graduate. This one was Don Rasawehr. I was met at the Hileman Hotel by the owner, Dave Hileman. In the lobby, I encountered another acquaintance, Margaret Marsee. Sue told me that she and Mary Ann Wendel were employed as showgirls in Ye Little Olde Nightclubbe. When I reached my room, the maid, Rosalie Fleming, told me that Jerry Sill had inherited the Kroger trillions and that he had turned eccentric and lived in the top story of the hotel,, which he nicknamed Sills Frills. While Rosalie was helping me unpack, the Altabell rang. The telephone was long since outdated} Gene Alt had Invented a new communication system. It was Mary Lou Gehm, society ' s most sought-after debutante. She had heard that I was in town and desired my professional services. It seemed that Clyde Dull, the famed portrait artist of society, had promised to do a painting of her, but had suddenly skipped the planet; she wanted me to file charges against him on grounds of breach of promise. That matter disposed of, I proceeded to go to the hotel swimming pool. Once there, I saw Sharon Davis, who told me that she worked as swimming instructor and lifeguard at the pool be- tween nursing engagements. Looking around the water ' s edge, I noticed a sunburned businessman. At closer range, it turned out to be Mac Brigner. Mac told me that he was sort of a sportsman- businessman, the owner-manager of the Brigner Basketeers all-girl basketball team, of which fliyllis Williams was the star player. He added that Maroile Clouse was the doctor for the team, I inquired about others, and he told me that Peggy Carr was very happy — married to the operator of the first Sohio station on the moon and teaching kindergarten. By this time, I decided to go back to my room. On the way back, a tall, distinguished man informed me that he was the house detective and that he had been looking for me because I was wanted on the Altabell . I finally recognized the detective as Paul Buchanan. On the bell, my personal secretary. Patsy Frysinger, notified me that I would have to out my trip short because of an urgent case at home. I set about packing and soon I was again on my way back to earth. On the plane, I tuned in my radio and found that Rockford was still on the mapl Ronny Sommers had just made a touchdown and saved the game for the Rockford Rockets ' football team. Jerry Beougher is the able coach. Having concluded that the members of the Class of 1958 had really made places for them- selves in the universe, 1 returned to my lawyer ' s office to live my exciting life until time for my planet-hopping jaunt again next year. —Miriam Hawk CLASS HISTORY Four yeare, work-filled yet sprinkled with fun, have passed as we assemble this Glass His- tory. We look baok upon the times we worked together studying, rehearsing for our class plays and preparing for our Prom, and hope that we have spent them wisely so that we profit from them in the years to come. In these twelve years, we have learned to live together as individuals expressing co-operation, friendship, .ambition, and comradeship. In the autumn of 1954, forty-one green freshmen gathered in the study hall to begin our high school life. Once again, we had Mr. Martin Lewis as our adviser. Chosen to lead the fu- ture Class of 1958 were Mac Brigner, President} Betty Hunter, Vice-President} and Hubert Ei- chenauer, Secretary-Treasurer. After awaiting our trip during the winter months, we journeyed to Dayton where we toured the National Cash Register Company, The Dayton Daily News, and the WLW-D television station. Our attendant in the Homecoming festivities was Betty Sommers. The next year found forty- two of us entering our sophomore slump year, with Marty Lewis as our adviser again. This year proved that this was no slumping period for us. Under the leadership of Hubert Eichenauer, President} Marolle Clouse, Vice-President} and Miriam Hawk, Secretary-Treasurer, we planned our second class trip to Cincinnati were we visited the Proctor Gamble Company and the Cincinnati Zoo. Many months of Intense study brou t reward to Mirisiffl Hawk as she placed first in the Ohio State Scholarship examinations in Bookkeeping. Mary Lou Gehm represented our class in the Homecoming. Wo entered our junior year with thirty-eight members, having lost several members and gained, as a new member. Bob Clark. During the year, we welcomed back Mary Ann Wendel after a year ' s abscence from our class. We chose as our junior class play, The Beauty and the Beef and were proud to have every member of the class participate. We gave a unique prom for the seniors featuring a red ceiling in Oriental Gardens. Jill Fox headed our class with Nancy Rogers as Vice-President and Miriam Hawk as Secretary-Treasurer.. Jill Fox was also our Home- coming attendant.. Under the able supervision of Mr. Boyd Granger, we chose the following to symbolize our class: Class motto — The elevator to success isn ' t running, take the stairs. Class Flower — American Beauty Rose} and class colors — Red and Silver. Mr. Hoover arranged for our class trip to Dayton and Middletown, where we visited the Armco Steel Mills. Hubert Ei- chenauer and Miriam Hawk were elected to represent the school at Buckeye Boys ' and Girls ' States, with Tom Sidenbender and Sharon Davis as alternates. Dave Miller was honored to attend the State 4-H Club Congress.. Glenda Winkler attended Y-Teen Camp at Ohio Wesloyan. University at Delaware during the summer. On September 5, 1957, a class of thirty-eight seniors entered Room Jl for their last year at Old Rock High. Those elected to serve as senior class officers were Bob Clark, President} Nancy Rogers, Vice-President} Hubert Eichenauer, Secretary} and Marcile Clouse, Treasurer. Sharon Davis reigned over the Homecoming Football Game with Jerry Beougher doing the honors as Captain of the team. Peggy Carr was the senior attendant. Miriam Hawk became a permanent mem- ber on the Dayton Daily News-Junior League Youth Forum. Mr. Hoover served us as class sponsor during our last year and Mr. Ned Booher was our Travel Club sponsor. Early in the year, we found we had the necessary funda for a trip to New York with Sen- iorama Tours. Mr. and Mrs. Booher will accompany us on May 21. The ambitious members who served as Travel Club Officers were! Presidents — Connie Henkle, Peggy Carr (two years), and Betty Hunter} Vice-Presidents — Sharon Davis, Larry Snyder, Marcile Clouse, and Mac Brignerj Secretary-Treasurers — Jill Fox, Mary Lou Gehm, Margaret Marsee, and Miriam Hawk. Our class was gifted with several exceptionally good athletes. Jerry Beougher, Mac Brigner, Hubert Eichenauer, Don Rasawehr, Tom Sidenbender, Larry Snyder, and Ronny Sommers played on the team that again captured the 1957 Mid-Western Conference crown. Bob Clark, Ronny Sommers, and Tom Sidenbender placed on the Conference first team, while Larry Snyder, Jerry Beougher,, and Hubert Eichenauer placed on the second string. The six seniors who showed great skill in the basketball season were Mac Brigner, Hubert Eichenauer, Dave Hileman, Charley Koontz, Dave Mil- ler, and Larry Snyder. Mac Brigner and Charley Koontz received individual trophies as the re- sult of their placement on the Mercer County League All-Star Team. Then,, too, Sharon Davis and Connie Henkle served as reserve and also varsity cheerleaders to cheer the team on to many victories. M-Tlie Sputniks have been good for America in the sense that they have replaced complacency with fear and created a new i-ealjzation tiiat we must push forward scientifically if we are to survK ' e. That was file consensus of I he Youth Forum here yester- day as teen-age panelists dis- cussed R u s s i a n satellite achievements. Forum members also called lor hard talk toward peace and predicted tlie end of the United Nations as we know it Mmmi today witliin five years. Rocktord higli school seniors Peggy Carr and George Wein- man joined regulars Gary Gas- tineau of Fairmont, John Shank of Trotwood, Judy Dumbauld of Celina and Miriam Hawk of Rockford on the forum stage. Here are some of their ideas : SHAIVK— Russia ' s laujiching of the satellites is eMra im- portant to us teen-agers be- cause we are the ones that are going to have to deal with the results. Most of today ' s adults won ' t be around when space travel is a big thing. H.4WK— Why did Russia get there first, instead of us? WEINMAN— We were loo complacent. We always Ihouglit tlie ' United States was so much better tlian anybody else. .SHANK— We ' ve got ' to do away with that complacency. I think the first thing that should be done is all the news media get on the ball and tell ' us what ' s up. They should try to instill some fear in us. A little fear would be a good thing. GASTINE.au— Another rea- son we ' ve fallen beliind is that we neglect higher mathematics and physics in ' high school. When a Russian has completed 12 grades he has five years of tliose subjects behind him. SHANK— It gets results, too. Last year we graduated 25,000 leclinical men. Russian schools graduated 50,000. DUMB APLb— There ' s no in- centive to go into the scientific field here. Otliers seem much more glamorous and offer more money. (JASTINEAU — Our educa- tional system needs to be re- vamped • to provide more science scholai ' ships and fnore research money. The gsvern- ment can do a lot to make science look more promising to students. HAWk— In Russia scientists are ti ' cated like movie stars. Tliey even have offices right across from the Kremlin. We should give our men of science more recognition. DUMBAULD— Another rea- son we ' re beliind is inter-serv- ice rivalries. Say the Army develops a missile and because it flies the Air Force says it should have one and then the Navy invents one that takes off from a submarine. Millions of dollars have been spent on three versions of the same thing. GASTINEAU— I firmly be- lieve that if all our resources and money and scientists were banded together in one project —say a rocket to the moon- any high school general science student could lead it and it would be a success. , .SHANK— We ' ve got to admit that Russia scooped us. They beat us soundly in the race. WEINMAN— I don ' t thijik it v as a race. If it was, ' the United States could have gotten a satellite up first. SHANK— In any event, the ef- fect in neutral countries like India will be bad. Lately they ' ve been tending toward our side but now Russia will Kam because the neutrals want to end up on the winning side. DUMBAULD— As far as neu- tral countries go, I think we ! houId cut down on foreign aid, tliough. If a country is so poor It can ' t support itself with the baie necessities it can ' t do us much good in the event of war, The panel turned toward the implications of the satellites for world peace or destruction, and America ' s present position in the race into space. SHANK— I think each side realizes now that the other is capable of destroying tiie world. It ' s time for some hard talk toward peace. CASTINTIAU— Until Sputnik went up American leaders were very optimistic, but lately no- body seems to know where we are. DOIBAUUJ- The true fac ts aren ' t out. Russia didn ' t have the A-bomb until four years after we did, but since then . they ' ve certainly advanced. They can match anything we ' ve ' got. ' On the United Nations, the panelists were pessimistic. HAWK— I think the U. N. has almost outlived its usefulness. The way it ' s set up now Russia can use the veto any time she wants to. . SHANK — It ' s a question of peace or oblivion now. I think a new international organiza- tion is very possible. G.ASTINEAU — I don ' t give the U. N. as it exists today five more years. I ' d like to predict that in the future the United States puts aside more money for science scholarships and programs and that there ' s heads or intellectuals, too. more respect tor the egg; There ' s got to be or w ' e won ' t; sur ' ive. i CARR— The impoj-tant thing now is for us to be first on the moon so we can regain the re- spect of otlier nations. DUMBAULD — Tlie door to space is beginning to open and it makes our world problems seem trivial, t agree that tlie present U. N. probably won ' t last five years. But there can be a new U. N. for peace in space— a bigger and better one than we have now. The Youth Foram is spon- sored by The Daily News and ■the Junior League of Dayton, Inc. BAYTOIV DAILY ca tte iA NEWS Thursday, Nov. 14, Page 30 FEAR REPLACES COMPLACENCY Teen-Agers Eye Sky; Give Ideas on Colonizing Moon , Teeu-agers eyed the ' skies j ' esterday and came up with ideas on evcrytiiing h ' ora space as a fountain of youtli ( it probably isn ' t ) to colonizing the moon during the Youth Forum ' s question and anS r period at Rocliford. Glen a W i n 1 ] e r opened tlie session U ' itli tlie query : Should H c pool our scien t i f i c knowle d g c with friend- ly nations? John G. Wintler S h a n J; — Probably. It would mean that we could make things much cheaper and fablei Frank Sliufileton, a visitor from St. Marys, and a pei- m a n e n t forum pan- elist last yeai ' , asked: Is the pub- lie being given ade- q u a t e in- F. Shufflcton formation about oiu- missile prosn ' ani now? Sliank— I don ' t think it ' s wise to give out too much or we ' U help the Russians more. Gai-y Gastineau— Tlie govern- ment shouldn ' t tell us esery- thing. I ' d say the way things are now is best. Connie Johnson aske l the panel: Wbat will be the pur- pose of going into space? HAWK— Mostly curiosity. DUMBAULD— To see what country can put the first banner on the moon, SHANK— There might be ani- mals and valuable resources on other planets. And the earth is over-populated. We could ex- pand into space and colonize. Bob Gibson asked: Is it true that people in space don ' t age any? GASTINEAU— I think tliat ' s science fiction. HAWK— The wear and tear in space would be terrific. You ' d probably age faster if any- thing. Sharon Da is asked: Will the country that controls the nniverse control the world? SHANK— No counti-y could control the imiverse. When we progress that far there will be no differences here. It will be just one planet--earth. We ' ll all be together, GASTINEAU-I think iu a short time either Russia or the United Stats could conti-ol tiie universe. Anita R h a d e s asked: When will t h e Sput- niks come j.down? Sh a n k— I ' m not aware that they will come down. .1. Rhoades When Uiey come within tlie earth ' s at- mosphere the friction of tlie air will set them on fire and they ' ll disintegrate. Do the Sputniks glide or ro- futo, Suzanne Toby asked. Gastineau— I ' ve seen pictures of Sputnik n and it revolves two to six times every min- ute. T o m Si- denben d e r asked : Is Russia far enough ahead t o start a w ' ar?. George Weinman — 1 tliink they know w e can destroy them and T. Sidenbendcr vice versa, so I don ' t think either side will start a war. Judy Dumbauld— But that ' s what has us so won-ied. We don ' t .know how far ahead Russia is. If there is a bal- ance of power there won ' t be any war. Shank— Russia doesn ' t have to start a war. They ' re at the scientific pinnacle ot the world and the propaganda is going their way. They ' re living it up. Barbara Little asked : Can Sputnik ruin world peace? SHANK— S p u t n i k has us scared to. death, but it can be a force for good like the atom. Fii-st we only used tlie atom for war, but there are so many new, peaceful uses. HAWK — I ' m more worried alMut things from Mars than Sputnik. Malcolm Baumgartner of St. Marjs asked : The United Nations may be doomed but «hei-e are we going to find somebody smart enough to set op a TJ. N. for outer ' space? GASTINEAU— ' Hie ti-utli is, old man, I don ' t have the slight- est idea. SHANK— There ' s always a man of the hour Tliere ' ll be someone Sherry Karcher, a guest from SI Henry, asked : What Is TOUT view- point on Project anguard? Guastinea —It was one S. Karcher big £ 1 o p . Tlie entire accomplishment was sending a ground-to-air missile up and having it in- tercept a drone out over the ocean. j Shank— We have the ideas, ' ; thougl), it v.-e had tlie money. We ' re spending it on roadside parks and education. DUJIBAULD— We ' ve got the money. We don ' t use it right. Sharon Davis asked: Are our leaders well enough in- formed on the missile pro- gram? DUMBAULD — Maybe tliey weren ' t, but they are now. Hubert Eickenauer asked: Does Russia know more about us than we do about her? SHANK — There ' s no compari- son. The Russians keep their Qvm people in tlie dark and we don ' t. It might be a good thing, though. If they know we have the weapons they won ' t be so quick to start a war, Roger Penn asked: II we got a rocket t o the moon would it be our possession uua MI RUM HAWK Youth Forum At Rockford The Youth Forum went to Rockford high school today to discuss Sputniks in the Sky. . The teen-aged, panelists were to give their ideas on questions like these: Can the Spuhiiks help Russia militarily?
