I V KV ■If CI i if Uloeket X UN yEli Detocatiim We have had the unusual privilege t his year of having with us Bill von Wagner, Oehrlnger Wuerttemberg, Untere Toretra 23, Germany. Bill was enrolled in the Junior class during the school year 1951-1952, having oome to this ooun- try under the sponsorship of The Farm Bureau for one year. He made his home with the Hugo Weinman family. Beoause of the very fine attitude expressed by him at all times in his olasswork and in his association with the student body, we are very happy to dedioate this issue of the Rocket to Bill. We trust that he will have pleasant memories of his stay in America and of the days spent in our school. We publish below a message that Bill has written for the students and faculty. Thanks to the Marshall Plan, 350 European boys and girls were permitted to come to the U.S. for one year. The same privilege is extended to American youths to visit some European oountry. We are here to study the American Way of Life — Democraoy in Action, the language, to exchange ideas that are to create better understanding and world friendship. The friendly way the boys and girls accepted me in their olasses and wel- comed me into school activities and the ' naturalness ' between teaoher and pupils will always be happy memories. At football I ' yelled ' and at basket ball ' yelled ' even more, but who could refuse to yell for the grand team and such pretty cheerleaders as Rookford has! Now, my greatest pleasure should be to meet some Rookford exchange stud- ents or teachers in Germany. I should like the privilege of showing you Germany as you have shown me your great oountry and wonderful people. (Class fjlstor In September of 1948 the freshman class with an enrollment of forty-two pupils met In the homeroom with Mrs. Whitley as advisor, ohooslng the following offloere: President, Mary Shaffer; Vice-President, Claire Stetler; Secretary- Treasurer, Doris Bollenbacher. The Junior play, Grandad Steps Out, was a success even though Leo Shaffer lost his mustache in the middle of a speech. In the spring the annual Junior-Senior Reoeption ended our social activities for the year. Back in 1951 our enrollment is only thirty-six pupils. Alice Heath went to 8unnyside, Washington, and June Canary went to Port Clinton, Ohio. Mr. Mason again is appointed our class advisor, with officers as follows: Presidsnt, Joe Havlicek; Vice-President, Ronald Putman; Secretary-Treasurer, Laurabel Pelver, The Home-Coming Queen for this year was Mary Shaffer and the senior attendant was Laurabel Felver. We agreed to take the Atomic Railway Limited and leave the next morning for Rockford. Anxious to find out what our classmates are doing, we went home and started to pack. On the train we met Mary Shaffer and Ruth Ann Weinman returning from the Democratic Convention on their way to the reunion. Since women have taken over politics, Mary and Ruth Ann are running for the presidency and vice-presidency, respectively. Looking across the aisle, we noticed that a man with a familiar face was writing a manuscript. Upon second look we saw that it was Larry Hoover, reporter for the New York Times, he told us. On our way back to the dining car, we tripped over a foot that was purpose- ly put in the aisle, and looked up to see Jean Shrider, who was dressed in a WAP uniform. After our long trip we arrived in Rockford, a then prosperous city with a population of 50,000. Being hungry we went into the closest night club and found the proprietor to be Tom Frysinger. After eating we decided to take B walk to explore the town and noticed a sign that read: Big Bob ' s Funeral Home . Sure enough the proprietor was Mr. Robert Stallter. Proceeding down the street we saw a department store which reminded us that we needed gloves and going in we were met by the owner, Ann Hoehamer. When she recognized us, she called over another classmate, Romaine Maurer, who was one of her clerks. They told us that the enormous supermarket in Rockford was owned by Betty Zizelman. From there we continued our walk and ' notlced the sign above the research laboratory, Sen e e tz ' s Laboratory . Being curious we went in, and were recognized at once by Dave, who informed us that he had discovered a cure for cancer. After discussing our school days, we were told that Bonnie and Bonita Custer owned a skating rink at the edge of town. Dave asked us if we would care to ride along to the reunion in his jet propelled car and we agreed. As we were passing a very large build- ing, Dave informed us that it was the Radar Hotel and was owned by Ray Counterman. After a short drive we arrived at the Rockford School. We had been very much surprised at what we had already seen and heard and wondered what would be next. Reaching the door we focused our eyes upon a very well dressed cowgirl whom we found later to be Lois Shaffer, an oil millionairess from Texas. We found the school very beautiful and much improved due to the aid for Ohio schools gained through the efforts of Ohio ' s two Senators, Joy Keoppel and Marvin Fisher. Noticing that most of the class was already sitting, we made our way over to the table. Sitting at our right we noticed Ronald Putman and Laurabel Felver who explained to us that Ronald was a lawyer in Chicago and that Laurabel was his secretary. At this point silence was called and the Reverend Forest Roebuck rose and offered prayer. After this we were served a very delicious meal. On our left was Claire Stetler who told us that he was married and owned a farm. He also told us that Paul Linn, Jerry Hoff nines, Duane Linn, Joe Smith and John Fritzinger were also married and were farming. Across the table was the star of the Zollner Pistons, Robert Secrist. Junior Shaffer, United States delegate to the United Nations, served aa master of ceremonies. After the roll call, to which everyone answered, Joan Koontz, the Governor of Ohio, gave a short talk, followed by a travelogue by our ambassador to England, Joe Havlicek, During the dance which followed, we met Mrs. Donald Ralston (Betty Caywood); Virginia Bollenbacher, the Governor ' s secretary; Doris George, owner of a drug store in Florida; Charlene Clouse, insurance saleswoman; and Mrs. Pat McLaughlin (Esther Bollinger), After the dance we checked in at the Radar Hotel to rest. We were proud of our class of 1952 and felt that we had fulfilled our duties as American citizens. Rockford Visitors 38 19 12 20 7 31 34 FOOTBALL The Rockford Tigers won three and lost six of the games played during the 1951 season. Playing their last football for Rockford High School were Bob Secrlst, David Soheetz, Bob Stallter, Ray Counterman, Jerry Hoffhlnes, and Tom Fryslnger. Bob Stallter was captain of the team. Bob Secrlst was second in this area for scoring honors. The team was coached by Mr. Mason and Mr. Schlatter. Scoring for the various games was as follows: Rockford Visitors Cellna 13 31 Coldwater St. Johns 6 7 Elida Paulding 34 6 Minster Central Cathollo B 26 Lima St. Rose Hloksvllle 20 34 BASKET BALL Rockford ' s Tigers provided many thrills during the 1951-1952 basket ball season. The most thrilling contest proved to be the Cellna game In which Rockford surged from behind to a win of 49 to 47 In the closing seconds of the gam e. The season ' s record was nine wins and seven losses. In league play Rock- ford scored four wins and three losses. For another year our basket ball team reached the finals of the county tournament, being defeated by St. Henry, win- ning the chance to participate In the district tournament. The Tigers were defeated in the first game of the district tournament by Forest 49-47 in a close scoring game. Playing their last game of basket ball for Rockford High School this year were Ray Counterman, Forest Roebuck, Bob Secrlst, and Junior Shaffer. These players contributed a great deal to the success of the team and will be greatly missed. They had skill that is difficult to replace. Mr. Schlatter and the other members of the varsity squad — Mike Dugan, Jonny Sldenbender, Wilmer Her, Dick Stetler, Paul Jackson, Gary Pryer, Larry Hlleman, and the cheerleadere-- Vlrglnia Bollenbacher, Shirley Temple, Doris Becher and Peggy Hawk are all to be congratulated for their fine work. Virginia graduates this year after some very fine chaerleading. HOME-COMING- On the evening of October 19, 1951 the Rockford band led floats through Rockford and then back to the Rockford football field. The Coldwater and Rookford bands proceeded to the north end of the field for the flag raising and together played the Star Spangled Banner. The Cold- water band left the field and the Rockford band proceeded to the south goal post and formed parallel lines. The Rockford football team burst through the tiger banner that was placed between the goal posts. Following this, the band played a fan fare and the floats were taken through the parallel lines of the band and then down the football field. The first float was a red Pontiac convertible, driven by Mr. Craine, rep- resenting the F.F.A. With him were Bill Von Wagner, John Frltzlnger and Joyce McBrlde. Joyce had been chosen as the F.F.A. Sweetheart. The G.A.A. float was next and was pulled by a black and yellow Chevrolet driven by Miss Severn. This float was decorated in American beauty roses. On It were Deloree Sommers, Ann Hoehamer, and Doris Bollenbacher. The Hl-Llfe float was driven by Ronald Putman, accompanied by Paul Jaokson. Lois Shaffer and Jean Shrider also rode In the Ford convertible. The queen was the third editor. The Y-Teen float was pulled by a blue Oldsmoblle and driven by Joy Keoppel. On this float rode Nikki Lelghner, Beth Ann Welsenborn, Danny Beohdolt and Stephen Alspaugh, representing a miniature attendant, queen, football captai n, and attendant, respectively. Betty Caywood accompanied them. After the Y-Teen float came the queen ' s float pulled by a red Plymouth convertible driven by Oscar Bollenbacher. This float was decorated to represent a football field with a throne in the center. On the throne sat the lovely queen, Mary Shaffer, wearing a black suit. Her attendants were: Laurabel Felver, senior attendant, in a green suit; Bonnie Hayes, Junior, In a gray suit; Marlene Provcl, sophomore, in a tan suit; and Saundra Dlsher, freshman, in a navy suit. Mr. croghan and Mr. Her, in Mr. Croghan ' e blue Ford, came last In the parade. After the other floats had left the playing field, the queen ' s float came back to the center of the field. The band formed a heart and played, Let Me Call You Sweetheart. The queen presented the captain, Robert Stallter, the football and wished the team luck In the game. Bob then crowned Mary Queen of 1951-1952 and In return Mary gave him the good-luck kiss. The float left the field with the band playing, There ' ll Be a Hot Time In the Old Town Tonight, closing the beautiful and memorable Home-Comlng of 1951.
