DEDICATION One of our teachers retired at the close of the last school year, 1949-50, having taught for thirty-tiro years, twenty-five of which were in teaching in the Rockford School. She was born in Rockford and graduated from Rockford High School. For her loyalty, fine character and the love which she showed for our school during the years she, was associated with it we wish in this small way to honor Mrs. Nora B. Whitley, now living in Chandler, Texas, by dedicating this the yearbook of 1950-51 to her. We wish for her many happy years of full living. The seniors express their appreciation to the board of education for the many hours they have devoted in making our twelve years in school happy and successful years. By providing an experienced faculty and a well-kept building our education has helped us reach the place in life that we feel will help us to further our education in higher institutions of learning or to make a success in life in the fields of service we enter. The present board of education includes: L. W. Merkle, President; Philip Runyan, Vice-President; Walter Shaffer, Wilbur Stover; Charles Buel; and Stanley Bricker, Clerk. _________ In September of 1947 forty freshmen met in the homeroom with Mr. Weisen-born as advisor, choosing the following officers: Mary Roebuck, President; Betty Pond, Vice-President; Doris Mefferd. Secretary; Bill Rutledge, Treasurer. In the fall we chose Doris Mefferd as the attendant from our class to represent us at the Home-Coming. A skating party was held at Sun Set Park. In the year 1948 we entered our sophomore year with an enrollment of forty-three. Mr. Shank was our advisor. Officers elected were: Ben Williams, President; Bill Rutledge, Vice-President; Don Schaadt, Secretary-Treasurer. Mary Roebuck was chosen as our sophomore attendant for Home-Coming. Another party was held at Sun Set Park. As juniors in the year 1949 with an enrollment of only thirty-sewn pupils, Mr. Hoover was our advisor. Officers were: Bob Stover, President; Don Schaadt, Vice-President; Jerry Bollenbacher, Secretary-Treasurer. Jane Bollenbacher was chosen junior attendant for Home-Coming. Our first social function of the year was the Senior-Junior Party which was a Sadie Hawkin's Day event. The junior play, Seventeen is Terrific, followed. In the spring the annual Junior-Senior Reception ended our social activities for the year. Back again in 1950 our enrollment still remained at thirty-seven. Although one of our members, Mary Roebuck, moved to Drbana, we were happy to welcome Clifford Sommers into our class, thus keeping our number the same as when we were Juniors. Mr. Hoover again was appointed our class advisor, with officers as follows: Dallas Butcher, President; Jerry Bollenbacher, Vice-President; Secre- tary-Treasurer, Mary Ann Gilson. Colette Dugan Lucille Felver James Fox Shirley Hlghley Jeanette Hoersten Frances Grandy Marie Greene Angus Larses Enid Reichard Betty Pond Eileen Miller Barbara Samborec Bill Rutledge ppnPHECY A beautiful evening in May, two of the seniors of the 1951 class, Helen Hen-kle and Jane Bollenbacher met in a night club in Rockford. This small town had through the years become a large and well-known city. As the two girls renewed their friendships, they decided that they would tour the city together. Among the singers at the night club they immediately recognized Marie Greene who had by this time become quite famous as a dancing and singing star. She was also making a movie with Lon HcBanaster, better known to them as Charles Shaffer. That evening they went to a luxurious hotel and were escorted to their rooms by a bellboy who was none other than Angus Marsee. He told them that the hotel was owned and managed by Enid Reichard and Lucille Felver. Oh, those ambitious girls! After getting settled in their rooms, they picked up the newspaper in which they saw a familiar name and after reading the article they learned that their classmate, Dallas Butcher, was how a sports editor of the Rockford Daily Times. They also noticed that there was to be an acrobatic swimming meet the following day, instructed by Ben Williams. Mary Ann Gilson, Patty Replogle, Doris Brown and Barbara Samborec were the girls trying for the title. On the front page was a picture of Cliff Sommers, a favorite contestant in the flag pole sitting contest. The next morning the girls awoke early and started on their tour. They hailed a taxi which was driven by another classmate, Jim Fox. He recognized them at once and immediately started a conversation about the Class of '$1. He told them that Jim Temple had become a big success in the Bark Dog Biscuit Co. and Martha Dilbone was his private secretary. Jerry Bollenbacher was president of The Piggy Bank with Frances Grandy and Jeanette Hoersten as his secretaries. Colette Dugan had carried out her plans and was now an elementary school teacher and an old maid at that! Suddenly the taxi swerved to miss a big transport truck and ran up on the sidewalk and into a small hot-dog and pop stand. A young man came storming out at once. They knew by his red hair and temper that he was John Crouch. They paid for the damages done and continued on their way. While walking along the street, they heard a loud blasting horn and there driving a slightly rusty old Ford was Bob Stover. He told them he was now happily married and that there were five little Stovers. He also told them that Dean Temple and Don Schaadt had two large dairy farms and Bob Winkler now owned a whole chain of grocery stores. Bob then hurried on his way, and the girls decided they would go to the Ritz for lunch. As they were eating their lunch, they glanced across the room and saw the Leighner twins. They went over to their table and after the greetings were over, the boys told them that they were now in parthership. in raising guinea pigs with tails. They informed us that Jean Donovan was a successful dietician. They also told them that Jovetta Dietrich was happily married to an absent-minded professor and that Letha Canary was in Paris designing clothes. As they were finishing their lunch, they noticed someone coming towards their table. They didn’t recognize the lady at first, but when she spoke they knew at once that she was Eileen Miller. She told them all about her modeling agency and that Pauline Wendel was one of her leading models. She also told them that Shirley Hlghley was one of her greatest rivals in the modeling world. But the greatest surprise was when she told them of Bill Rutledge going to Hollywood to star in a leading western picture and that Betty Pond was taking the place of Fanny Price as Baby Spooks. On leaving the Ritz, they bumped into Doris Mefferd who was now Mrs. Vincent Dugan. She insisted that they go home with her and spend the remainder of the day. They decided nothing could be more pleasant. And so as their journey ended, they were glad to see each of the Class Of 51 meeting success and good fortune in life. We, the senior class of 1950-51 by last will and testament hereby will and bequeath some of our useless possessions which we dearly treasure to our under- classmen. Much credit is due the coaches and the reserve team for making the basket ball season so Interesting. The reserve team lost but one game during the season. The squad loses the following seniors: Jerry Bollenbacher, John Crouch, Bob Stover and Roy Leighner. These players are to be congratulated for the ability they displayed during their athletic competition in high school. The cheerleaders, Colette Dugan, Helen Henkle, Virginia Bollenbacher and Shirley Temple, did a fine job in keeping alive the enthusiasm of the spectators. Colette and Helen graduate this year. The reserve team cheerleaders also shared the honors of the evening for their fine cheering. HOME-COMING On the night of October 13 a fanfare by the Rockford Band was heard and onto the football field in convertibles came the 1950 queen and her court. The first convertible, driven by Jim Temple, carried the queen, Doris Mefferd; the senior attendant, Jane Bollenbacher; and the junior attendant, Mary Shaffer. Following in another convertible, driven by Dallas Butcher, were the sophomore attendant, Norma Granger, and freshman attendant, Delores Sommers. They were attired in suits and wore rose corsages. Stopping in the center of the field, Queen Doris Mefferd was escorted to her throne where her attendants stood on each side. Bob Stover, the 1950 captain, presented the queen with her crown and in return received a kiss of good luck. After being serenaded by the band with the song, I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now, she and her attendants were driven to the sidelines to watch the game. Snapshots 1887 W. A.
