As the Class of n49H, our thanks and appreciation to the Board of Education for Its greatly appreciated assistance in making our high school career a happier and more pleasant one. Members of the Board of Education are: L. W. Merkle, President; Philip Runyan, Vice-President; Walter Shaffer; Wilbur Stover; Charles Buel; and Stanley Bricker, Clerk. The present senior class, with bright expectant faces, presented itself to the first grades of various schools twelve years ago to study reading, writing, and arithmetic. After going through the usual trials and tribulations of elementary students—quarrels, pranks and punishment, concerts, etc.,—we finally entered Junior High School. We started our high school year With enthusiasm and extreme ideas, which were soon curbed. We sponsored a party for the Sophomores this year and our attendant in the Home-Coming festivities was Barbara Adams. In 1946 our sophomore year brought us new faces. Mr. Shank, our ho m e -room teacher, helped to make this an enjoyable year. This year we gave a party for the Freshmen. The queen's attendant this year was Janet Hays. The next year, being our Junior year, passed quickly. We presented our play, Me and My Shadow, which was under the direction of Mr. Hoover. The Junior-Senior Banquet was most successful, very well attended, and enjoyed by everyone. Barbara Adams was the Queen's attendant. In September of 1948 we entered school again with a feeling of dignity. Our enrollment included twenty-one girls and twenty-one boys, and our sponsor was Mr. Weisenborn. Several members of our class were guests of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette on the radio program, Around the City Desk. The Seniors gave a dance for the Juniors and everyone present enjoyed himself. The Home-Coming Queen's attendant for this year was Carolyn Jackson. The class officers were: The events which followed all seemed to pass too quickly—the class play, the reception given to us by the Juniors, and, of course, the graduation ex-erclses. These events closed our years at Rockford High and we will always be grateful to everyone who has helped us to arrive thus far in our educational career. —Glenn Borchers, Jr. BOARD OF EDUCATION CLASS HISTORY President • • • • Vice-President. A large neon sign reads: IP YOU DON'T WANT TO HIKE, CHECK YCKJR PLANE WITH ED AND SPIKE We lower the plane to a spacious runway in front of the hangar owned and managed by Ed Nosek and Wayne Pond. We are eager to hear all the local gossip. They tell us that the class reunion is being held in the school auditorium starting at 5:50 P.M. Since it is only 4:15, we decide to hail a taxi and view the sights. The taxi driver is none other than Mary Lou Williams. As we breese along Main Boulevard, we pass a private gym. Mary Lou informs us that it belongs to the Rockford Tigerettes, a professional women's basket ball team. Their coach is Emma Lou Severns. Jeanne Moore is captain and high scorer of the famous five. We approach a stylish shop. The sign over the window reads: Madame Pifi's Exclusive Shoppe. It is owned and managed by Barbara Adams. In the next block we see three identical homes of architectural beauty. They belong to Mr. A Mrs. Paul Schaadt (formerly Martha Wollet), Mr. and Mrs. KermitHoe-hamer, and Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Vining (the former JoAnn Secrist). As we near the outskirts of the city, we see a beautiful colonial-type mansion, the Rockford Rest Home; whose co-owners are Mary Counterman and Madonna Wendel. Being a little thirsty, we decide to stop at Doyt's Diner . Yes, the same Doyt Crouch we knew back in 49l Dorothy Shock is a waitress here, and she tells us that Mr. and Mrs. Dick Springer (Betty Boroff) are living on a farm a few miles from town. The television set is turned on, and we are thrilled to see another classmate, Janet Hays, The Voice . Dorothy tells us that Kenneth Standiford is another star of television, better known to the public as The Profile . Upon leaving Doyt's Diner, we meet Danny and Lowell Shaffer, who are in charge of the Shaffer Canning Company here in Rockford. Now it is time to go to the school. Even it has changed. We scarcely recognise the modernistic styled building. One oT the teachers (Ralph Schaadt —head of the Agricultural Department) greets us. He informs us that the Music teacher is now Mona Weinman. The guests are arriving, and we learn about the rest of the class as Carl Rumple announces their arrival. (He is a member of the State Legislature.) Lt. Klela Strete, of the United States Waves. Ralph Ahrens, famous star of stage and screen, and his private secretary, Josephine Custer. Dr. P. L. Hight, of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Patsy Harden, star of the new ballet, Fairy Wings . Carolyn Jackson, foreign correspondent for United Press. Janet Linn, public health nurse In Mercer County. Luanne Williams, who has dedicated her life to science, and acquired fame by discovering a new drug used in treatment of rabies. Glenn Borchers, Jr., private attorney. Jack Cook, coach at Ohio State University. Donald Eichler, winner of last night's wrestling match in Madison Square Gardens. John Keoppel, owner of a very valuable herd of registered guernseys. Norbert Huffman, farm implements dealer. Jean Rutledge, Prudential Life Insurance salesman. David Valentine, civil engineer in Alaska. Captain Ronald Weddle, of the Army Air Forces. Melvin Wheeler, head of the OIM Trucking Company. Richard Young, manager of Macy's Department Store. Conversations dealing with the events of the past ten years, recall our high school days. After a delicious and very satisfying banquet, we are entertained by some of our talented friends. Too soon the evening comes to an end, as all good things do. Tired, but very happy, we return to the airport. Tomorrow we must be at our work again in the Psychiatric Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Our positions there are Desk Receptionist and Supervisor of Nurses, respectively. —Virginia Stephenson and Pauline Book JUNIOR CLASS Top Row? The record was five wins and three losseai All the games were interesting and exciting to watch. The student body and faculty members of Rockford High School wish to congratulate the team and coaches for their outstanding work. Keith Davis was chosen as a member of the first All-League Team for the season. Those included on the second All-League Team were Vincent IXigan, back; Bob Beerbower, guard; Bob Stover, tackle; Ralph Smith, center; and Wayne Pond, end. The preceding team elected Vincent Dugan and Kermit Hoehamer honorary cocaptains for the 1948 Season. The Tigers were second in the League, losing only to Coldwater in League games. The season s record was: Rockford Opponent Celina 7 ♦St. John 26 0 ♦Paulding 26 0 ♦Payne 38 0 ♦Hicksville 28 6 ♦Coldwater 0 7 Howe 7 32 Leipsic 32 6 ♦Denotes League Games BASKET BALL ;andpoint of wins and losses the 1948-1949 basket ball would not compare favorably with the past few years, but considering the inexperience of the team, the fight displayed and the improvement noted in the various players during the season the school is looking forward to a fine year of basketball in the coming year. Many of the teams played during the season advanced to the sectional tournaments. The team loses the services of a key player in the graduation of Jack Cook, the only senior member of the squad. Jack has been an excellent basket ball player and has contributed much to the success enjoyed by the basket ball teams of the past few years. We expect to see some fine basket ball iii the coming years on the part of the other team members: Vincent Dugan, Richard Hoffhines, Bevan Klmmel, LaMar Roebuck, Lowell Bollenbacher, Richard Stallter, Robert Stallter, John Crouch, and Fore Roebuck. We wish to express our gratitude to the reserve squad which played sc many fine game s during the season.
