DEDICATION BASKETBALL SENIOR LIFE BASKETBALL The senior class proudly dedicates this 1946 Rocket to the Basket Ball Team and the Coaches for bringing to Rockford its seventh Mercer County Tournament Championship and also the Mercer County League Championship The team with Its four senior members of the first five and six seniors of the first ten built up an enviable record during the season and In the county tournament So to the following team members—Edgar Bollenbacher, Jack Cook, Palmer Jackson, Paul Schaadt, Don Shaffer, Doyt Crouch, Keith Davis, Melvin Davis, Vlnoent IXigan and Richard Hurless and to Coaches Cook and Cover, we dedicate this volume of the Rooket The 1947-148 basket ball season was thrilling from the first game of the season to the last game In the district sectional. With a record of twenty-three wins and two losses the Rockford basket ball team gained a great deal of publicity and attracted large crowds of fans to the majority of its contests. Two of the spectacular games of the season were the Knoxville game, played in the Celina gymnasium, which Rockford dropped 39-41, after the lead had changed eighteen times, and the final game of the Mercer County Tournament whloh Rockford won from Port Recovery 44-42, coming from behind in the final minutes of play and then surging on to an overtime victory. The hopes for further conquest were shattered In the District Class ”B” Sectional when Havlland, a team Rockford had defeated earlier In regular season play, turned the tables on them and won 40-32. Rockford was very proud of its 1947- 48 team and praised the coaches highly for the excellent work done with the boys, enabling them to perform feats which In the past few years were not attained by any other Rockford team Neptune Ohio City Convoy Havlland I.C.H.S. Two students withdrew in the first semester, and Margaret Bollenbacher Joined our class in the second semester. The class elected the following officers for the year: President ............................ Don Shaffer Vice-President ....................... Jim Pontius Secretary-Treasurer. . . . Doyt Crouch Our class chose Lillian Shrider as attendant to the queen of the Home-Coming. The social event of the year was the freshman party held in November. Members of our class were active in both basketball and football that year. We ended the year with a feeling of accomplishment and happiness at the thought of being able to give our title, green freshmen , to the eighth graders. September of 1945 brought us back to school again but not as green freshmen . Early in the fall the sophomores had a skating party with the freshmen at Sunset Park. Mr. Garster was our home-room teacher. Again the attendant chosen to represent our class in the Home-Coming festivities was Lillian Shrider. Officers for the year were: President .......................... Wanda Shaffer Vice-President ....................... Jim Pontius Secretary-Treasurer . . . Don Shaffer At the start of our Junior year our class numbered forty-two pupils. Two new members enrolled during the year, but we were sorry to lose three classmates. The class elected officers for the year as follows: President .......................... Wanda Shaffer Vice-President...................Dick Hawk Secretary-Treasurer . . . Judy Dugan Assistant Secretary-Treasurer Gene Beams Our class was under the leadership of Mr. Hoover. Lillian Shrider was chosen Home-Coming Queen and Judy Dugan was the Junior attendant. In October the Junior class presented A Date With Judy . The play, under the direction of Mr. Hoover, was well attended and very entertaining. Our class was well represented in both football and basketball. Palmer Jackson, Don Shaffer, Edgar Bollenbacher, and Paul Schaadt were on the varsity basketball team. The class went to Port Wayne later in the year, and were guests of the Port Wayne Journal Gazette on the radio orogram, Around the City Desk. The Junior-Senior Reception ended the activities for the year. We started our senior year with an enrollment of twenty girls and twenty boys with Mrs. Whitley as our home-room teacher. In October Judy Dugan was chosen Home-Coming Queen of 1947 and Wanda Shaffer was elected senior attendant. The seniors gave a dance for the Juniors in the fall. In November our class played host to South Side High School of Port Wayne on the Junior Town Meeting of the Air on WOWO. The senior class was honored in having outstanding athletes in both basketball and football. The next event in our senior life was the class play, followed by the reception given by the juniors. Of course, the graduation exercises, the goal of all of us, closed our senior year at Rockford High--a very happy year, indeed. Class officers were: President .................... The remaining two will take you for a rocket ride on a C-120 to visit with our old schoolmates. Landing on the moon at Nin-Nubibus field we were Immediately taken over by guards who rushed us to their high officers, the shrimp Jim Pontius and the whale Verl Whitmore. The officers told us that all were inspected and had to be of the highest ability to be allowed to enter the moon. But before we had a chance to be much worried, a tall, good looking general came in and said he would vouch for us. We were surprised to be looking into David Merkle's face. Of course we can imagine seeing him leading a column of men as he used to lead the Rockford High Band. Marie Belna was following him, as she did in high school, being his personal secretary. Eldon Stetier’s queer looking rocket-mobile delivered us to the Somnolent (hotel) where once more we were greeted by a familiar face; Gladys German coming out of the door recognized us. She had Just had a press conference with a great singing star of television, Mary Becher. Since Mary was one of the Class of 48, we would have to look her up too. As we registered, an unforgettable voice spoke, that of Mary Heath. She was married to a dentist but was still progressing with her musical career. Waiting to be taken to our suite, we heard soft music coming from the next salle (room). On investigating we found Don Shaffer, sitting at the piano, leading his orchestra. His vocalist, Betty Jo Rhoades, was singing one of the new hit songs of the day written by Don Lowry, another classmate. That night we decided to go to the Vis Vitae, one of the popular night clubs of the moon. Upon entering the club, low and behold, big, broad shouldered Don Temple, the doorman, ushered us in. The hostess was none other than Janice Canary. Upon recognizing her we asked her if any of the other members of our class were there. She explained to us that the richest man on the moon was there. So we gladly followed her to be introduced. There standing before us was the much sought after, Tom Dailey. Sitting at our table, our eyes were attracted to the dancers. Judy Dugan was the leading lady with Palmer Jackson as her partner. Upon rising early the next morning we made our way to the hotel swimming pool. The first person we saw was the wonderful diver, Graydon Rodgers. A decision for a sun bath kept us on the beach practically all forenoon. We saw Bob Adams and Jane Clutter coming down the beach together. They stopped and told us Dorothy Swanders, who was elected Goddess of the Moon for 58, would be 8long shortly. Paul Schaadt was building a castle in the sand with his two children. We stopped and had a short talk with him asking him about his home on the moon. At lunch, as we read the society page, our eyes were drawn at once to the picture of Loella Friedly, a leading society woman of the moon. While lunching, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Beams (the former Wanda Shaffer) visited our table and told us about their family. In the afternoon we decided to attend a scientific lecture given by Loren Reichard and his assistant, Mary Weinman, twc well-known scientists of the moon. During intermission we ran into Dick Hawk, a noted physicist and his secretary, Miriam Hays, who were quite interested in the lecture. On going back to our seats, we sat next to Richard Kurless and his wife. An invitation to the Glass Ball was given us as we entered the hotel. The hostess being Margaret Bollenbacher, a wealthy matron of the moon, who lived in an amazing glass mansion. Upon entering the ballroom we saw Eleanor Walls dancing with the famous sports critic, Ed Bollenbacher. Our hostess introduced us to the other celebrities, namely: Betty Bransteter, the popular television star, Melvin Davis, lightweight boxing champion, and Wanda Granger, a noted woman politician. Waiting at Nin Nubibus field, for our rocket ship was taking us back to earth, Ruth Stoll, Alan Felver, and Dale Zizelman came rushing up to bid us ngood-byw• We enjoyed our trip very much and hope to take it again in another ten years• --Gloriana Hill and Lillian Shrider JUNIOR CLASS Row; Lowell Shaffer, President: Jack Cook, Vice-President; David Valentine, Secretary; erhore Adar $, Treasurer; Pa -line 3c c, Glenn Borchers, Petty Boroff, Vary Ccuntenrsn. Jones, Lowell Weitz, and Joe Havlicek announced the arrival of the floats which participated in the 1947 Home-Coming. The floats led by the Queen's float came onto the field from the south end. The Y-Teen Club made the Queen's float, and it was decorated in blue and white. Ketcham's Funeral Home loaned the grass which covered the floor of the float. The throne was of white and gold. Blue and pink chairs were also on this float for the Junior and senior attendants. This float which was pulled by Don Stover in his maroon convertible, conveyed Judy Dugan, Queen, Wanda Shaffer, Senior Attendant and Barbara Adams, Junior Attendant. Wanda held the crown and Barbara held the football. The F.F.A. float, decorated in red and white, carrying the other attendants, was next. The attendants were: Sophomore, Evelyn French; Freshman , Doris Mefford; Eighth Grade, Wary Shaffer; and Seventh Grade, Marilyn Friedly. This float was pulled by Eddie Beougher. King Football was honored by the Beta Psi Eta float. The trimmings were blue and white. The trophy represented the contest between Coldwater and Rockford; the helmet the players; and the football and crown King Football himself. There were seven small girls in this float who represented the club. The car which pulled this float was loaned by Jack Easthome and was driven by Paul Schaadt and Lillian Shrider. The Hi-Y float followed. It was decorated with the club's colors. William Hoehamer loaned them his truck for this and Palmer Jackson drove it. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Weisenborn drove Mr. John Shank's car and pulled the green and white float of the Alpha Gamma Kappa. It held a miniature Queen who was Carolyn Sparrow, and the small football captain, Wayne Clutter. They represented the future Queens and football captains. The G.A.A. float was the last in line. The emblem of the club was upon its side and the colors of red and black decorated it. Three members of the club rode on it. Martha Wollet depicted baseball; Emma Severns, basket ball; and Betty Bransteter, volley ball. Jim Pontius drove his father's car and pulled this float. When the float of Queen Judy Dugan came to the middle of the field, the procession stopped. Ed Bollenbacher, captain, came forward and crowned the Queen. Barbara then gave Judy the football which she in turn gave to Ed with a kiss of goodluck. The National Anthem was then played, and the floats proceeded off the north end of the field. Mr. Weisenborn was the announcer. Show Boy was played for the Queen and her attendants at the half. The father of the Queen furnished the carnation bouquets for the ceremonies. In announcing approaching events snd sumnarlsing things that have already happened, the paper keeps the student body aware of the progress of the school. To be worth-while, however. It must give the pupils a chance to express themselves and must encourage them to express themselves In logical thought and In a correct manner. If the paper Is put out In a slipshod manner. It accomplishes but little and the training gained from Its publication Is worthless. It Is an honor to be a member of a staff which publishes a good paper, one which In providing good training informs others of high school activities. The Hi-Llfe has been in publication for twenty-two years and has had a good record. We encourage the future Hi-Life staffs to be cognizant of this reoord and to strive to better the publication In any way they can. Members of the Hi-Life staff for the past year were: Lillian Shrider, Editor; Gladys Garaan, Activities Editor; Barbara Adams, Feature Editor; Betty Bransteter, Class Editor; Jeanne Moore, Sports Editor.
