Due tc the late date at which the book was started end the decision that : advertising woulc be solicited, the quantity of pages in the yearbook was United in accordance with the receipts from subscriptions. John Wendel acted with the yearbook adviser In helping to see that the material was handed in on time and in managing tho sale of subscriptions. Other- Seniors helped in various ways in writing the material and selling subscriptions. Many lower classmen also aided in writing for the annual• We, the class of 1947, dedicate this annual to Mrs. Whitley, our class sponsor, and to Mr. Bricker, the adviser cf our annual, for their kindness and helpfulness to us as a class. After completing all last minute details, we stepped out on the sidewalk where our bell-boy had a taxi waiting for us. Looking at our driver, ve discovered he was Ted Jackson, head of the Taxi-Cab Company in New York City. Ted then drove us, with great speed, to the LaGuardia Air Field, where we were to board a plane for our first trip around the world. We arrived before time for the plane to take off so Betty Strete, the air stewardess, showed us the plane. When finishing our inspection of the plane, our curiosity was very much aroused as to whom our pilots m uld be. Then to our surprise and delight we found they were two of our friends, Raymond Clutter and Gordon Hayes. After seeing them, we hesitated as to whether this trip was really necessary. But we were convinced that it was important enough to take the chance. Recovering our composure we went to hunt a seat. Before we could seat ourselves comfortably, there was a great commotion outside the plane. Looking up we saw Paul Whitmore dashing toward the plane. We were greatly enthused to learn that Paul was taking the same trip as we were. After all the passengers were seated, the pilots took their places and we were soon flying among the clouds. Our first stop, we discovered, was to be China. The military airport at which we landed was owned and operated by General Gerald Mihm. Taking us to his elaborate Chinese home, he told us some news of a few of our school chuns. First he told us of one of China’s most famous missionaries—none other than Floyd Miller. Also we learned that Audrey Davis was a nurse in a missionary hospital there. As our time was limited, we left for Germany. We were very anxious to visit the city of Berlin since we had heard so much about it during the war. After a few days in the city of Berlin, we heard there was to be a concert at the Opera House. Dressed in our fonnal attire, we anxiously attended the Grand Opening of the concert. We enjoyed it very much, but the thing which we enjoyed most of all was when our good old friend, Allan Dellinger, stepped forth to play his own arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue. We went backstage afterwards to congratulate him on his great success in the music world. While walking through the streets of Berlin one day, whom should we meet but Dale Crouch and his lovely wife. Dale is a government man there on a special mission for the President of the United States. Our tour then took us to England, and of course we didn't want to miss seeing the King and Queen. After being ushered into their presence and given a formal introduction to them, the Queen told us that her country was very well pleased with the fine work that Mary Luth had done with the Red Cross. The Queen also invited us to attend the musio concert that Madge Shock was giving that night at the palace. So we decided to be present to talk a while to Madge after the concert. She told us that while she was in London she had met Harold Bollenbacher one day. Harold, growing restless of the life in the United States, went to England and set up a large business finn in the city of London. Arriving back in New York the following week, we visited the famous Stork Club. We were in luck as Tommy Dorsey and his band were playing, starring his vocal singers, Dortha Butler and Naomi Canary. On our way out of the Club, we met Louise Zizelman and Estella French, two glamorous movie actresses and their handsome escorts. They informed us that Fae Shock was a student and captain 6f the cheerleaders at the University of California. Also we learned that Mary Fleming had settled down to married life in Louisville, Kentucky. After seeing much of the world, we decided it was about time we were visiting the Capitol of the United States, Washington, D. C. We were there at an opportune time, as Congress was in session. Looking over the group we were amazed to see Bill Springer, Don Bollenbacher and Van Crabtree. Our guide informed us that Don and Bill are Congressmen from New York and that Van is their personal secretary. Later outside we saw them completely surrounded by a group of women whom we learned were trying to influence their votes. After seeing this, we thought it was time we were bringing our Journey to an end and returned to New York. In addition to the Journey being a delightful one, we were glad to learn where all our old school chums were. --Pauline Pfister and Madonna Wurster SENIORSf ACTIVITIES Valedictorian 8alutatorlan Madonna Wurster . Several others participated on the reserve team. We were also very proud of our boys who played on the football team. The name of our play was, WA Date With Judy, and was given on October 25. The play was a great success, with a splendid oast under the fine direction of Mr. Hoover. The school gave an operetta entitled, Lelawala, with the leading part sung by one of our members, Mary Heath. The Junior-Senior Reception was one of the high lights of our Junior year and will be remembered by all. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Carolyn Jackson FRBSHMAW CLASS HISTORY We were a bright and cheery looking group of boys and girls as we entered the great Study Hall to begin our freshman year. Anyone looking close 1 y might even have observed green halos shining above our heads. We were the same group that had been in the eighth grade with the exception of two new students, Barbara Grandy and Rosie Thatcher. Later on in the year Jack MoCarty Joined our class and Mary Dunn moved away. At the first class meeting these people were voted into office: President..............Sara Lou Abbott Vice President .... Eva Jane Linn Secretary ...... Martha Hawk The Sophomores gave us a skating party when we beat them selling magazine subscriptions. When the time came for election of an attendant to the Queen of the Home-Coming, Eva Jane Linn won the honored position. Our year was very enjoyable in every way. The record of fifteen wins and three losses was the best 1946- 47 season record of any Mercer County High School team. By dropping one league game—to Port Recovery In an overtime contest, Rockford became Co-Champion of the Mercer County Basket Ball League. The return of ex-serviceman Crouch to the line-up encouraged the team at the beginning of the season, but fate stepped in during the closing games of the season in the form of the mumps, taking a toll of two regulars. The fine 8eason s record was gained only by a hard-fighting, well-coached team. Coaches Cook and Cover deserve much credit for the Tigers' fine record. The season's record was as follows: Neptune Ohio City Convoy X.C.H.S. New Knoxville Ohio City ■KFt. Recovery Willshire 1.C.H.S. When the season opened, only a few veterans reported for practice, but the lack of experienced boys was compensated by a large turn out of enthusiastic freshmen. Under the leadership of their new coach, Mr. William Cover, the team progressed rapidly and the season's record established is one that our school is very proud of. The student body and faculty members of Rockford High School wish to congratulate the team and coach for their fine record. Our school was pleased to have the following representatives on the Little Buckeye Conference All League Team: Edgar Bollenbacher, End; Gene Beams, Right Halfback; and Don Bollenbacher, Left Halfback. The team 8 record is as follows: Rockford Opponent I________ HOME-COMBO On© of th© gala ©vent© of th© football season was the crowning of th© Heme-Coming Queen, Lillian Shrider, on October 11, at th© start of th© Rockford-St. Johns Football Game, Th© queen was dressed in a gown of whit© and carried a beautiful bouquet of white and violet mums tied with green ribbon. In her court were Madonna Burster, the senior attendant, Judy Dugan, the Junior attendant, Janet Hays, the sophomore attendant, and Eva Jane Linn, the freshman attendant. All the attendants carried white mums. The beautiful flowers were presented to the queen and her court through the courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Shrider, parents of the queen. The band marched to the center of the football field and played the Star Spangled Banner. The queen and her court were then escorted to the field on a float pulled by Jack Easthom in his convertible whioh was decorated with colored streamers. Paper Doll was the theme song of the occasion, and was sung by Lowell Weitz accompanied by the band. Don Bollenbacher, a senior and captain of the football squad, stepped to th© throne and crowned the queen. The queen presented him with the football and a kiss of good luck for the evening. CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders of Rockford High School are well-trained and graceful girls who add much to the athletic contests. Their skill in leading the cheers and their spirit is admired by our student body and followers and by otheaa as well. The cheerleaders contribute much to the success or failure of making a game interesting. They can make a contest which is one-sided more entertaining by their exhibitions of acrobatic skill. The first-team cheerleaders were Fae Shock, a senior, Lillian Shrider, Gloriana Hill and Judy Dugan, all Juniors. The student body is looking forward to another year with these Juniors and thanks Fae for her contribution to a fine cheerleading group. The Junior-cheerleaders are also to be complimented for their achievements during the past year in cheering on the reserve team. The Junior high cheerleaders were Sara Lou Abbott, Emma Lou Severns, Colette Dugan and Helen Henkle. ALL LEAGUE SELECTIONS At the close of the football season the coaches of the Little Buckeye Conference met and chose the Conference All League Team. Rockford was proud to be represented on this team for 1946 by Edgar Bollenbacher, End; Eugene Beams, Right Halfback; and Don Bollenbacher, Left Halfback. IN APPRECIATION The Seniors have much to be thankful for. We appreciate the contribution made by the local and neighboring ministers who give of their time so willingly in delivering chapel talks. We thank the many businessmen who have contributed in various ways to the welfare of our school. To all who have attended our athletic contests we express our thanks, for without your support our teams would soon disappear. To the faculty, school board, school secretary, custodians, cooks and bus drivers we express thanks for all the favors extended to us. To our parents who made such great sacrifices to keep us in school, we humbly express our appreciation and trust that our accomplishments in the future will prove that your sacrifices were not in vain. .'A0 BAND GIRLS' GLEE CLUB L— %) BAWD Rockford 8 School Band has become a large as well as an active organization.
