Ardie Elkins has been the head custodian at Rockford for quite a time, and is now ready to give this post to another. As Mr. Elkins prepares for a somewhat quieter life, we would like to wish him the best of success in his future. And, to try to show our appreciation for all the behind-the-scenesi' work that he has done, and for the patience that he has shown to all the students he has known, we would also like to dedicate this, the 1969 Ram's Tale, to Ardie Elkins. Even in years of happiness, there sometimes comes a dark note. One time of sorrow in our past came in the year of 1964. To an unsuspecting community, family, and class came the sadness of the loss of a friend and loved one. Mary Marlatt was a quiet member of the class, but a friend to many people. Her unexpected death brought sorrow and grief to all. She will always be remembered by her friends and classmates as a thoughtful and happy person. We are five members in my family: my parents, my brother Birger, 21, and my dog. I came over here in August to live in the Voss family for a year. I feel like I am a real member of their family. The living here and in my country is alike in many ways. I have a good time and really enjoy myself, and everybody I meet is very nice and helpful. The school system is different than I am used to. Some things are better and some are worse. You have much more school activities and you have a school spirit that I have never seen in my schools in Sweden. It is a great experience to come to a foreign country and live with a family and go to a school where so much is different, but even so is alike. I want to thank everybody here in Rockford for giving me such a wonderful and unforgettable yearf' Barbro Olander IT WAS A VERY GGOD YEAR WYE .357 FDR TUDENTS FRG OTHER LANDS M yrta Stau b I am Myrta Staub. I came from Switzerland to Rockford, to spend a year here in the United States. I am living with the Steinhauer family., where 1 feel very much at home. I have the opportunity to learn about other customs and another way of thinking, the American one. There are differences, but they are not important, for people seem to be the same all over the world. Most of my time is spent in school. I am learning a lot and I like the classes. In Switzerland we can't choose our classes, we choose a type of school after ninth grade. The school I am going to is called Gymnasium and is very small. When I go back there, I shall miss the school spirit of Rockford, for we don't have any sports in the Gymnasium. I am planning on studying medicine after two more years in the Gymnasium. But I am also very interested in Interior Decorating, Languages, and Sociology. This one year will be one of my most valuable and wonderful years, for I met so many people, who all helped me to understand more about America. We have managed to widen our selections by adding many new books this year. The student librarians are very aptly trained by Miss Terrie Martin, to perform any and all duties of the library. For their work and necessary duties, they receive one full credit. We are always ready to assist the students with locating and researching materials and books. We have a Library Clerk to aid the students also, Mrs. Arlene Laitila. e -----1. 1 1 - ri 2 8 8 X s-at-.Mase M 'xl K ,six l 1 fed l A J' gif f 'I 4 af , . 41 ag ' if ani' x 1-.. CROSS C0 TRY This year Rockford's cross country team ran to a surprising six and two conference record, and they attained a fine second place finish in the league. Composed mainly of underclassmen, led by Mark Haworth, the 1968 team showed good depth and individual effort. Next year looks promising also, with just three seniors out of the top ten leaving. The 1968 team's co-captains were seniors Don Alcumbrack and Bob TenEyck. The Rams had a regular season record of sixteen wins and no losses. The Rams triumphed as the Tri-River Conference champs and won the District title in the post-season basketball tournaments. They continued on to the Regional tournaments until bowing to Oscoda in the final battle for the Regionals. The Rams had a season record of 19 wins and one loss. Over the past two years Coach Konkle's teams posted a record of 36 wins and 2 losses. The Rams averaged 73.3 points per game and only gave up 55.7 points per game. The Rams Basketball Team had a banner year. Bill Hart led the team to one of its best seasons. Hart lettered for four years in basketballg he was the leading rebounder for the last three years, and the leading scorer this year. Hart led the squad to two District Championships in three years, two Tri-River Championships, and two consecutive undefeated regular seasons. Coach Terry Konkle calls Hart the most unselfish player Ilve ever had-tremendous competitor and team player . Besides Hart, the two starting guards, Scott Piereson and Larry Knapp, showed lots of hustle and desire that helped pull the team through some tight spots. The same can be said of Joe VanOverloop and Steve Stuits, the forwards. The team showed co-operative spirit and scoring consistency. Steve Stuits will be the only returning starter, along with nine lettermen who shall continue the Rams' success. V 1 E 3 KN 1 , ' 1 X l r i as as X X X , is X . The J.V. team finished second in the Tri-River Conference league behind the Sparta Spartans. The most outstanding player on the squad was Jeff Sage. Sage led the team in all hitting categories. Larry Curtis did a fine job for the team on the mound. The fine crop of talented players on this year's team should help next season's varsity ball club. ALL MY NS 'fAll My Sons , this year's all school play, is about the Keller family shortly after World War II. Joe Keller tried to hide the fact that he was responsible for shipping defective parts for airplanes. He tried to convince himself that he was no worse than anyone else. He felt responsibility to his family, but the play points out the real truth-that we are responsible to everyone, and that all the boys in the War were Joe's sons. CAST Row I .' THE IMPORTANCE CF BET G EAR EST This play, written by Oscar Wilde, is about a rich, single man whose name is Algernon, and a quiet, nervous fellow named Jack. These two enterprising young men were the basis ofa tale of a double love affair. The two women involved fell in love with the men, each thinking that his name was Earnest, but they were in reality Algernon and Jack. In the end the girls find that they were deceived, and also realize that they do not love the real men. That shows the importance of being Earnest. . .or something like that, ll6 STA GE CREW Row 1: Linda Glass, Rae Patterson, Laura Kuhlman, Arlene Samrick, Jan Reevers, Jackie Snyder, Paula Rea. BYE BYE BIRDIEN Bye, Bye Birdie is a bright musical, written in 1960, and now performed at R.H.S. in the spring of 1969. Mike Stewartis book is a tale about an Elvis Presley-type rock and roll singer who gets the call from Uncle Sam. Conrad Birdiels manager gets a great last fling idea from his secretary-fiance, and Conrad travels to Sweet Apple, Ohio, to kiss one sweet Kim McAfee goodbye, as a symbol to all his other fans. The story actually centers on the ups and downs of Albert, the manager, and Rosie, his secretary, in their battles with the conflicting powers oflove, the managing business and an interfering mother-in-law-to-be. In the end everything, for Albert, anyway, is Rosie as the crowds wave Bye, Bye to Birdie. Nt We sos STA GE CREW Row If Connie Shier, Paula Rea, Pat Donley.
