The Bookstore Sells What We Need. When we arrive at school each morning, these are the scenes that meet our eyes. Usually we don't even give them a second glance, for they have become a part of our routine, yet, when we need supplies or assistance, these places become very im- portant. ' We usually refer to our school as just school, but when it gomes right down to it, we're really proud of our school. The fine reputation it has built up in the academic field and in the fields of music and sports is something we can not overlook. When we speak of Rockford High to students from other schools, we know that Rockford is Cl school of which we can truly be proud. wmJmsmsn Superintendent Kleinert and Mrs. Keesler PrihClPOtl,,.FOX . ff , f F i-'V J I . Careful Planning and Administration Help Us All 4 School Board: E. J. Kleinert, Jack Carlson, Ted Carlson, Lynn Gill, Kenneth Morrison, Harold Kitson. To the custodians of Rockford High, Mr. Hall, Mr. DeCator, Mr. Elkins, and Mr. Johnson, because you are friendly, patient, and helpful, we wish to dedicate the 1959 RAM'S TALE. Because you wait for us when we're slightly late, because you contend with our noise and cheering on the way home from the games, because you clean up after us, because you're always willing to lend a hand in anything from a window that won't open to a door that's locked, because you have our interests and welfare at heart and are dedicated to keeping us comfortable and in pleasant surroundings. Jim, Max, Ardie, and Roy, for these reasons and because you are really friends of each of us- to you we dedicate this book. t Our years in high school are a unique few in the course of our lives. And here at Rockford, each year has its own events that set it apart from all others. This year - the year we had a championship football team - the year we really felt the growing pains as our enrollment increased but the building did not. Will we ever forget the spirit of enthusiasm shown by each student and faculty member, the co-operation among all the members of the Rockford High School Co-operative Association? Hardly! Yes, we can truly say that it is with a song in our hearts that the 1958-59 year will remain - ever-wrapped in the warm glow of friendliness and unity that makes R.H.S. what it is. Now let us turn the pages and re-live those moments of 58-59 and remember each person we were akin to during those now-past months. His main ambition is to get his Junior High students interested in mathe- matics. He not only teaches the principle of numbers but also keeps the pupils inter- ested with news of the day and facts that he has found to be worthwhile. Mr. Stanley McBride is helping students in his eighth hour advanced algebra class. This is quite traditional because the course has proved to be a little difficult at times. Mr. McBride's method of teaching has taught his many students the understanding of higher mathematics. Guidance 1- Interest Mr. Tom Baer has taught his geometry students the fundamentals of this course. His subiect has been of great value to many students who have learned good iudgment and sensible reasoning. Along with drawing constructions they must memorize the many theorems that are presented throughout the book. Mr. Jim DeRyke can be found in this room several times throughout the day. Here he is teaching his students the ideas behind mechanical drawing. They have learned haw to use the many instruments required for this course and have also learned how to put an idea down on paper. Mr Clinton Lrndhout is seen here instruct- ing his students in physics They learn to realize lust how Important science of this kind is in daily lite The class is interesting, and IS taken mostly by senior students. Aside from gaining knowledge in physics, the more basic fundamentals of how to study a course of this type are learned. Mr. Lawrence Bayer has several biology classes. There are many things to be learned and the students have found observing the wonders of biology quite interesting. They have been taught a variety of different fields ranging from plants to the human body. Learning and Success Mr. William Greig has a variety of things that he teaches his eighth grade science students. In this class they get a broad view of the science field which better prepares him for the high school sciences. dw Mrs. Anna Warner has several classes of seventh grade communication skills. There are so many dilterent things to be taught that it makes it quite interesting for her students. It is very important that they be- come well prepared for future years in high school. Miss Jean Davidson in her communication skills class. In this class the students at an early age learn the fundamentals of the English language. It is that which we learn when we are young that we will retain and continue to use when we are older. Mrs. Mary Ann Holmes has a variety of proiects for her tenth grade English classes. Although there are new literature books they still contain the traditional readings, such as Julius Caesar and Silas Marner. lt is also in this class that tenth graders write their autobiographies. Mrs. Dortha Haight is in her communica tion skills class. Here her students learn history, geography, and English. The stu dents in this class receive a good firm foundation for their high school classes f- Y- -Y ,. .,. ..,T,.,f..- ., ,,,,..,... ..,.-. V.,-..-.....,. Mr. Donald Marvin has several speech classes. It is through this course that many students have learned how to address large groups of people. The diction and speaking habits are improved along with constant speeches which have to be given as a means of practice. Mrs. Lila Boyer has two Spanish classes. Everyone enioys learning about the customs of Spanish-speaking countries. Although most of the time is spent in learning verbs and their coniugations, everyone still finds it interesting. lt seems to give everyone a sort of self-satisfaction to have accomplished a foreign language. Mrs Lucille Brown is seen here teaching Latin to a group of students. lt is a very good language to take because many of our English words are derived from it and it helps us to understand their meanings. Along with the basic Latin, many historical facts are taught. Mr. Robert Boyer listening to current events. This is a part of his American History class. Every Monday the students each give a current event. In this way they not only learn their history, but they know what the situation is in the world. Mr. Thomas Weeda has two classes of government. The students learn about the senators, how taxes are used, and, in general, how our government is run. It is very interesting to discover how the govern- ment systems differ from state to state. Mr. Sam Benham teaches two classes of senior government. It is very interesting to learn exactly how our governmental system is run and operated. During the course of the year each student is required to write a term paper on some phase of government. Mr. Sam Goodman is seen here in one of his world history classes. This has been a very good class to prepare students for college and future years. They learn the customs of ancient Rome and other countries of Europe. Mrs. Myrna Harger is kept busy with all of the library work outside the library as well as inside. Throughout the year she visits many English classes and explains the system of our library to the students. It is very helpful to be able to find any in- formation that you may want especially when the classes are writing term papers. 'nl ,.J'fl,f'i -fig .ff '1 Q05 ' ,fcctf ft eccbjsxfsf Mr. David Thompson came to Rockford High at the beginning of the second semes- ter and took over Mrs. Brown's classes. He taught Latin I and tenth grade English, everything from Latin coniugations to auto- biographies. Mrs. Lucille Young is teaching in one of her two bookkeeping classes. Along with the regular classroom studies, there are many outside proiects which her students must complete. This class has prepared many students for future work in business ofifices. Mr. Fred Schultz is in one of his several art classes. It is here that his students learn the fundamentals of drawing. They begin with elementary paintings and eventually work up to some of the most difficult. SENIOR BAND Fourth Row: B. Finch, D. Elkins, R. Roe, J. Woznibk, K. York, J. Richards, Mr. Wenzel, B. We played for all of the home football games and marched in the Santa Claus parade. We helped to present something new this year, a combined choir and band Lenten concert. We also put on our usual spring concert. This year the band went to two other schools and enter- tained the students with exchange assemblies. We participated in the district festival, as well as the Grand Valley Band Festival. We've had a busy year and have had fun, too. 5, VARSITY CHOIR: Back Row: G. Doosenberry, M. Wood, J. Boss, S. Because of its rigorous nature, it not only provides a fine, mental tonic for the development of an aggressive attitude, but it is unequalled as a means of acquiring co-ordination, poise, and effective use of the body. After a man has learned how to pin his opponent's shoulders to the mat, the winning spirit invades the mind, and he realizes that he can take care of himself in any Sort of physical encounter. The Ram matmen had an over-all record of three wins and four losses. They beat Lowell twice and Belding once while losing to East twice and to Grandville twice. The victory over Belding was the climax of the season, for the match was put on for the whole school. New Sport Captures Student Interest WRESTLING TEAM Third Row: Mr. Townsend, D. Richardson, B. Tennis is a very fast game, and to become a good tennis player, it takes long, hard hours of practice. For those who participate in this sport, it develops co-ordination, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes and iudgment. This is a fascinating game to watch and keeps the spectator as well as the participant on his toes at all times. Nearly all can enioy this sport either by par- ticipation or watching. Participation in track and field holds a strong fascina- tion for those who have been introduced to the sport. Once a young man experiences the thrill of sailing over the cross-bar or competing in a close race, or sees himself improve a foot in the shot put, he will learn to love the sport. Competitive ability, which is one of the most noble and admirable qualities possessed or developed by man, is one of the essential ingredients for success in track. Track teaches one to have a greater respect for one's own body, what it is able to do, and what habits are necessary to keep it fit and at its best. Its lessons are also those of humility, sincerity, and individual respect. Its lessons are not soon forgotten, for they are those of experience. The game of baseball teaches a young man to receive victory graciously and to accept defeat as o temporary setback. This is good, for in life we all shall ride the crest of victory, be it great or small, and in turn we shall taste the bitterness of defeat. We're sincerely grateful to and proud of our athletes and fine coaches who have kept Rockford's tradition of fine baseball and spirit of enthusiasm that have helped make this sport the great one it is today! Betty Brooks, a vivacious teenager, is the editor of a neighborhood newspaper. When Betty hears two young women talking of their latest murder mystery script, she is convinced they murder for thrills and immediately writes all about it in her next paper. This gets her into a very confusing situation and soon everyone is a part of the exciting plot. Junior Play Cast: Back: A. Erhart, P. Bonner, L. Ferrand, T. Sonke, H. Sherman, J.
