U V 'J Z, .Q FE' A . xg FOOTBALL Rockford experienced a fairly successful football sea son, winnxng four games of a sxx game schedule One of these was by forfiet because of our opponent's having used an xneligible player Two victories were obtained through the one point margin, one over Otis Otchards 19 18, and the other from Cnksdale, 35 34 Rockford suffered its worst feat from Oaksdale with a score of 44-15 The boys playing therr fxnal year of football for the blue and write are Bill Bell, Clark Collrer, Don Lee, and Larry widner These players were mainstays of the team however, Coach Hxbbs will have B111 Goebel, Alden Jorgensen, Jerry Holcomb, Kenny Purcell, Wayne Widner, Tommy Purtill, Earl McClure, and Eugene weitkamp back for the i94iseason The 1940 season was the fourth for six men football at Rockford Hxgh, the school's having inxtiated the sport its athletic program in 1937 The grid game had been shelved here about fifteen years ago when it was decided the school could not support the game That was before the ad vent of the six man type game, and the eleven man game d mands more players and equipment than the school could suc cessfully muster So it was with keen enthusiasm that Rock ford High welcomed the return of the grid lport to its ath letic program The 1957 team was undefeated In 1938 the Indians were defeated but once, while in 1939, the blue and white was un ableto garner much glory, wznning but one game BASKETBALL practice games played, including the merry go round at Fair field in whxch four ncxghboring schools partlcipated Rock ford took the winnings by efeating Fairfieldln the playoff The boys ended the season with three straight wins over Amber Fairfield and Lindbergh after being defeated by Latah, Riverside Medical Lane and Otis Orchard Rockford's greatest victory was over the Fairfield Beavers w h a thirty four to sixteen score Larry widner, Don Lee, Clark Collier, Casey Christensen and gill Hickstein played the best offensive brand of ball with Dor Vulph, Lugene Neitkamp, and Tommy Purtill display ing plenty of good ball handling during the season The second team won a good share of the contests during the season, so Coach Hibbs should have some fair reserves for the coming season Clark Collxer, Don Lee and Larry Widner graduate this spring . . .
