In 1984 Rockford College purchased the head- lease of the former Bedford College from the Crown Commission- ers and founded a new institution. Dr. Norman Stewart is the President of Regent's College as well as Rockford College. The rest of the administrative staff is British and includes Mr. .lohn Kelly, the Vice-President and Miss Pat Salmon, the Bursar. Five Rockford College faculty staffed the Rockford program: Dain Trafton, the Academic Dean: Dr. Gordon Ross, the Assistant to the Academic Dean: and Dr. Strickler, Mr. Gilg, and Mr. Dedrick, faculty. Mrs. Barbara Strickler was the Dean of Student Services and headed a staff of Pixie Barrett, Assistant to the Dean: and Resident Assistants, Tracey Layng, Lucy Rothstein, Dave Seck, and Lisa Godde. The Residence Hall offered housing to many different London programs. In Spring Semester there were students from the Okla- homa State graduate program in architecture, the Antioch Col- lege in a creative writing program, Suny-Oswego in New york studying broadcasting, and Europeans studying business with the European Business School. The Hall has room for 186 students and was almost full both semesters. Most of the residents stayed for one semester, but the dorm did accomodate several short term programs and two or three exciting summer programs. Reid Hall is a four story building with pantries on each floor and one laundry room. The rooms are single and double combinations on each floor. The third floor was a women's floor and the other three were co-ed by sections. The bar, refectory, and book store are in an adjoining building, so the students don't have to walk outside to eat and drink. Of course, the emphasis of a residence hall in London is on getting out to do things, but the dorm did offer quite a few activities throughout the year. There was a welcome back and farewell disco party at the beginning and end of each semester. There was also a Halloween party, a punk party, games in the park, football teams, a weekend at Harlaxton Manor, pub crawls, a Valentine's Day Dance, and an afternoon tea with the President. There were occasional free tickets to Camden Palace Cone of the biggest nightclubs in London! and other interesting places. The Rockford students also ventured all over England and the continent of Europe. 6 Regent's College Big Ben's tower along the Thames. ' Zz' .- ,, '..f'-ff' A a.. , ,I ,1 -f i gifm ' 3, 1 1 14 1' ' . This year the big event was the weekend of .luly 19, 1985, and the class of '89 was born. The weekend was spent taking tests, meeting new people, and planning for the fall semester. There were several highlights of the weekend, including the social hour hosted by the shadows and RA's Friday, and the presentation of Marne along with the orientation dance Saturday. Orientation was the first taste of college for the Freshmen. lt gave them the opportunity to meet the people they will go through college with. Everyone did an excellent job of welcoming the new students to Rockford College. Competition between complexes helped achieve this goal. Water relays, a banana eating contest, a pool tournament, tricycle races, and a tug-o-war provi- ded study break excuses throughout the week. Dress- up days during the week included:Hang-Loose Hawaiian Day, Toast to the Regents, Purple and White Day, and Hats Off to the Regents. Thursday night Coach Glon auctioned off pairs of soccer players. Prices ranged from 53.00 to S26.00. These slaves were subjected to such activities as floor mopping, dish washing, sign painting, and dusting. The Bonfire on Friday night was a success despite the rain. The pom pom squad and the cheerleaders per- formed after the rookie soccer players sang Junior Bird- man. The Homecoming King and Queen, Bob McClus- key and Carolyn Munda, led the snake dance up to the tent to watch pie throwing and the belching contest. Saturday morning was filled with events which includ- ed the Miller car push, the alumni game, and the spirit parade. The soccer team defeated UW-Platteville in front of bleachers full of spirited students. At half-time Cum- mings and Kent were announced as co-winners of the spirit week contest. Hands Off played at the Homecoming Dance to end a fabulous week of spirit and fun. QL 'lang' 1- . A Cummings' tug-o-war team pulled its way to a victory. Amr-W' . Aided by a frothy brew, the pumpkin carving started promptly at 9:00 PM. The plan was to strategically relocate the creations to various parts of the campus without being caught by Security. The seniors courageously began their mission with target number one including Starr Science Building, Clark Arts Center, and Seaver Gym. A group of seniors were apprehended by Securi- ty while attempting to scale the walls of Seaver. With a lot of fast talk, this group was able to walk away without any repremanding. As one Security Officer put it, We have the pumpkin incident under control. The festivities proceeded along without any further incidents until the seniors learned that two of their classmates were trapped in Clark Arts Center. The seniors commandeered a security van and attempted to rescue the trapped seniors, but were unsuccessful. Security also attempted to find these students, but they managed to escape and safely returned back to Pumpkin Headquarters in Kent Center. The final stretch of the mission dealt with the hanging of the pumpkin on the flag pole. As several seniors stared in awe, the Great Pumpkin was raised to heights un- seen by anyone before. Security added to the moment by spotlighting the Great Pumpkin. The feelings of senior unity and class spirit were felt as the seniors saluted the Great Pumpkin in all of its glory. l.'.fI l54W' ' K Qin .. 1 'A ,Q, f is 1'-.4 Todd Townsend and Curt Poling hard at work carving pumpkins. . a cgpw 'if' 3 iam - 4 Jane, Tracy, Margee, Wendy, and Kelly preparing works of art T .iff sf If 'Y S 4 ' 3 sum Y? . jj , Q5XXVif,N e6 ' ' ' I .V gg W X ' A ,. They missed a National Tournament bid by one place, rank- ing fifth in their region. It marked the second consecutive year that a team from the Midwest region played in the National Champion- ship game. Three of the Re- gent players were voted to the All-Midwest Team: Ro- man Lupinek Clst teaml, Chris Gordon Ctst teamb, and Bob McCluskey C2nd teamb. Lupinek and Gordon were also voted to the All-Illinois WELCOME TO IOWA. Team. They helped Rockford College to win their 6th con- secutive Conference Title. A great group of freshmen as w e l I a s transfer stu- d e n t s helped the Regents to their success- ful season. Head Coach Pete Glon now enjoyes a record of 28 - 9 - 2 after just two seasons. The only dis- a p p o i n t - ment is that he has not ful- filled his promise to the play- ers by having as in-tents practice. At one point the players tried to get a prac- tice cancelled due to the fact that there was a tank on the field. But since it was only a poster-paper tank, practice was still held. cs' ,iiff-f---Mff:-f 'fm -----fL1l-z'.'il,:..g2,,.,l-Q.. ....- ....r ,1 ,,W,.,.:1 g,,.,,,,,,4,,g MMA,-WN ,fl,fg- - TL , . - 3. .s-ew.. -M.. The team finished with the top five runners improving sig- nificantly over their previous times. Siguijon Hjartorson, the Regent's number one runner, was a key foc- tor in determining the team's suc- cess. The Regents, led by senior cap- tain Troy Yunk, highlighted its sea- son by finishing fifth in the confer- ence. The runners ended the season by traveling to Dovenport, Iowa. where the NCAA Division III mid- west regional meet was held. Yunk, an all-conference selection, finished in the top third of the regional race among a strong and talented field. With the experience and enthusi- asm of the returning lettermen, next year's team should prove to have a solid core for another successful sea- son. 96 Cross Country A 'A s ' Q A - .1 x x ml' ,. .1 .4 A :XXL Left to Right: Leo Lynch, Johonn Bjornsson, Couch Scot Crain, Olofur Thorsteinsson, Siguijon Hjortorson, and Troy Yunk. The girls traveled with the soccer team to Minnesota - passing time on the long drive up by teaching advisor .lan Nelson Tan Shoes and Pink Shoelaces , belting out Madonna tunes, and playing flutes Cwhich the soccer players later played for donations under the cheerleaders windowsj. The basketball season provided a nice alternative to grass and mud- covered floor cheers - resulting in more floor cheers and mounts. During practices, all eight girls could be laughing hysterically on the floor, then minutes later be diligently practicing their new floor cheer. They enhanced their choreography skills in the vans by dancing on the ceilings or doing the Wave. Second floor's personality this year was reflected by our motto, Our GPA is low . . . but we want to get it up, which shows our fervent desire to improve our academic reputation and our love of extracurricular activities. We charitably passed on our dubious distinction for having the lowest floor or hall GPA to McGaw 3 first semester, and participated in several floor activities, including soccer and football games, a Super Bowl party, VCR parties, and the first annual Shooting of the Moon.' A unique combination of individuals with varying interests and personalities made Third Floor McGaw a great place to be this year. Everyone pulled together to put on an International Floor Dinner in the fall at which we each had an opportunity to get to know one another better by cooking the traditional dishes of our respective nationalities and sharing them in a meal for ourselves. The dinner was a great success. Other floor activities included movie nights, educational programs, occasional moonlight golfing and lounge baseball , and biding time in ever-increasing anticipation of the arrival of our long-awaiting, slightly belated floor shirts. The Porch also made a brief reappearance this year - and the full exit sign was putty as ever . Floor officers included: Andreas Lauer, President and IM Representative: Tony lsabelli, Vice-President: Dave Marx, Secretary: Greg Gnoffo, Treasurer Eric Hoffman, Senator: and Mark Ostazewski, Complex Council Representative. In spite of our somewhat low occupancy, fifth floor was always full of enthusiasm Cprobably due to over- indulgence in CHOCOLATE!! Activities included a stimulating program on sexuality and relationships, a Secret Santa party complete with chestnuts roasting on an open fire Cwell, actually marshmallowsb, Secret Bunnies, creative writing on the CHOC-Boards in the bathrooms and a variety of other spontaneous zany happenings. As our floor sweatshirts stated, residents were sometimes known to Have a Fifth and a Smile , and it was evident that everyone learned to Enjoy Fifth . We had a lot of fun selling ice cream in November, even though some of us froze and the ice cream melted! With the money raised we had our first pizza party. We had a second pizza party as a result of winning the Christman floor decorating contest. The floor was always festively decorated and was regularly patrolled by Humphrey the Hamster and Hocus Pocus the rabbit. Seventh floor's theme this year was Soar with Seventh! CYes, those were balloons on our shirts, NOT light bulbs!! Despite our diminishing number of residents, we still managed to have lots of fun. Our cheerleader and two pom pons Cnot to mention a few die-hard fansb showed our spirit. Our two dancers showed our talent and of course there's our swimmer, volleyball player, basketball players, and various powder-puff soccer players!! Amidst all our diverse interests, we still find time to study, finishing fourth among all the residence halls' GPA's! Other activities included an aerobics program led by Jackie, inner tube water polo, a donut sale, and Secret Santa's! We housed cheerleaders, poms, actresses, dancers, athletes, brains, a yearbook editor, and the Homecoming Queen. Residents came from four states and three different countries. We truly were the home of 31 Flavors. Emerson was always busy: our activities included: selling hugs for club-fair. tuck-ins Ca night Joe Zagraniczny will never forgetb, the Secret Santa Party Cond the fun surprises that the presents brought!J, and a Scavenger Hunt for men. We participated in some educational programs on nutrition, cosmetics, and CPR. These activites were fun, but our biggest accomplishment was the Sweet Dreams Party - the campus-wide Pajama Bash. The party was a huge success even though it was interrupted by one of the infamous Cummings fire alarms, and Kris and Amy's room ended up looking like a jar of Orville Redenbacker's popcorn. This year's officers were: Amy Suess, President: Tracy Howell, Treasurer: Kendra Williams, Social Chairperson: Sue Long, Senator: and Kris Fowler, IM Representative. i 1 A, .,,,...-.- ...pgs-v- ' 0 S ll l t Q.
