The final deadline for the yearbook is July 2. Looks like we might be a little late. But under the circumstances which Patty Iserman and her tiny little staff were subjected in order to produce this book, l believe she has done a remarkable job. It was just a week ago when Patty asked me to write this copy about school issues. Many hours have been consumed trying to create something witty and humorous. As I reflected on all the occurances of this past year, I realized that anyone who was even the slightest bit conscious during the year would remember the outstanding points: 17 the creation ofa mascot, the lion, for the athletic department: 23 the opening of the Lion's Den, the new student union: SJ the possible purchasing of a lease for a British campus: 43 the establishment of a professional counseling position on campus: and 53 the abrupt closing of Dayton Hall and the removal of private telephones. Numerous other events occurred, most of which I recall as events from Student Government. However, these would be considered insignificant by the majority of the general campus community. From a personal perspective, one of these insignificant events stands out from the remaining and deserves, in every aspect, more credit and attention than any of the above five mentioned items. I have always believed that credit should be given where credit is due: thus. I would like to take this opportunity to express my admiration and deepest thanks to a beautiful young lady who has given so much to this school, but has been given little recognition, little thanks, and even less assistance - Miss Patty Iserman. In May of 1963 Patty was given editorship of the yearbook - a position no one wanted. Due to many unfortunate and unforeseen problems, the condition of the yearbook had disintegrated into, simply, a complete disaster. The responsibility for the shambles that existed cannot be blamed on a single individual: it was the result of mismanagement ranging all the way from the prior yearbook editor through Student Government Executive Board up to the top of the Administration. Without any formal reservations, Patty accepted the challenge of producing a book from scratch, with no starting materials and with a handful of staff members. I could spend pages upon pages describing the difficult conditions under which Patty worked, the obstacles she hurdled, much less the infinite number of hours invested in this project. Instead, let me quickly summarize: Patty produced two yearbooks C82-83, 83-843 in one academic year: also. Patty finished this book by herself To demonstrate her dedication even further, she has accepted the editorship of the 84-85 yearbook - a 160 page hard-cover book. My heart goes out to Patty. To those of you who do not like the soft-bound book or do not like the small number of pages, do not complain to either Patty or myself. For everyone on campus knows how diligently Student Government urged students to.donate just a little time and skill to the yearbook effort. Few options existed when Student Government and the yearbook executive staff were making final decisions about the future of the yearbook. In order to produce, let alone finance, two books, a compromise had to be reached. So here it is, folks - the final production ofa year-long student effort to turn the yearbook around. I think we have done it, but only with the persistance, patience, and dedication of Patty. There will never be any way that Rockford College can even come close to adequately compensating Patty for her extraordinary performance. I hope that by allowing me to print this article in the yearbook, Patty will realize that people do recognize and appreciate her abilities. May she always know that she has at least earned my respect and utmost admiration. Congratulations on a job well done! Respectfully submitted, Ellen J. Evans A Past Executive President of Student Government 4 SCHOOL ISSUES It I I ll L tl I I 'I It -I H I I I I I I I I II I I I I I I I I I I I Q 2 W whirl 4? EML TQ EMT 4516? Pager X .Qs.gQsQsg S - Y zssg ' x My friend Linda was a child. Please don't misunderstand me. She was a very mature, adult person. She knew exactly what she wanted from her life and had good ideas about how to go about getting it. But she was a child. She would stand and peer at a sunset with awe-filled eyes and whisper, UHow pretty.N I knew she knew why they were the way they were. I knew she knew better than I did. But what she saw was that it was Hpretty.u But she was a child. She would decorate the room with the zeal and accuracy of a happy silver- smith putting the final touches on a goblet: careful, skillful, but with infinite joy in what she was doing. Then she would stand in respect of what she had done and what it stood for. She would giggle and chortle and clap her hands and be so happy. Then she would turn the lights out in the room and the lights from the Christmas tree and the window lights would bathe her face with a peace she could never quite obtain in daylight. I recall these reminiscences for a reason. I think my friend Linda had a quality in her that all of us need from time to time: the ability to be a child. The ability to appreciate things simply, not because of what we know about them, but because of the way they make us feel. It is a rare gift, but not unobtainable. Linda did it. Mark lO:lA. It was quite a frustrating, yet exciting year for Student Government. We began the year at freshman orientation by distributing purple and white beanies to all freshman, and in a contest run completely by Student Government, a committee chose a lion to be the new school mascot. Other student government projects include: snow and ice removal by students, phone survey, and a new financial program for all clubs and organizations. LATHROP 61 Seventh floor McGaw - the greatest floor on earth greeted visitors this year as they stepped off the elevator. This circus theme was also displayed on their red and white floor t-shirts. They gathered on several Saturday mornings throughout the year for breakfast. The seventh floor resi- dents sold Lifesaver lollipops to pay for these events. At Christ- mas time, the women really got into the holiday spirit with Secret Santas and a brightly decorated lounge, including a fresh Christ- mas tree. As Secret Santas, they left sweet surprises in front of each other's doors the week be- fore finals. At the end of the week, they revealed their identi- ties and exchanged larger gifts. The floor participated in sever- al l.M. events, including volley- ball in which they placed second overall. All in all, the floor has been very active and enjoyable to live on. The officers for seventh floor this year were: Marianne Minnis, president: Val Fair, vice-presi- dent: Patty lserman, secretary: Marietta Scavo, treasurer: and Mary Wolff, senator. Helping keep unity were our offi- cers: Juli Baer, president: Linda Erickson, vice-president: Carolyn Krajewski, secretary: Lonna Strei- cher, treasurer: and Nancy Judge, l.M. Rep. Working together, we had fun- draisers that were very success- ful. We sold pizzas for what seemed to be forever. With dili- gence, however, we raised enough money to have a won- derful Christmas party, as well as a super floor breakfast. Nancy helped us work off those eating sprees with her l.M. regimen - her motto, You will participate in intramurals! It was not all fun, though. Things got crazy when the new semester began. Everyone de- cided to play musical rooms. lt took us three weeks just to find out where everyone lived! All in all, it was a wonderful year and the Funny Farm was indeed fun. The fourth floor had a terrific year! Although we did not do very well in l.M. Basketball, we sure smoked 'em in l.M. Volleyball. We had a great Christmas party about a week before break, and another party in the Spring. With all this, we still managed to have the second highest G.P.A. among the men's floors and dorms.
