THE EFIH The l982 - I983 school year is behind us now and it is time to look back and examine what changes and events have transpired this last year. His Benevolence, President Norman Stewart, is going to give us a new student center , . . This student center will be, if the president's P.R. is correct, the greatest thing since sliced bread. It will have everything a college student needs to relax and have a swell time. By the time you're reading this, you will be able to judge for yourself just how swell the new student center is. Wonderful things are also happening over in Starr Science. This year, Rockford College made plans to get a new computer, a new Engineering program and a new chair in the Chemistry department. All those things will help improve our image as a Liberal Arts College --- maybe. The Heritage Fund, a multi-million dollar fund-raising drive got underway. This fund will help pay for such luxuries as a new roof for the library. On the faculty front, Dr. Wilma McNess, Professor of Education and Child Development, will not be here next year. She is going to retire and do all those things she hasn't had time to do over the last few years. Good luck, Dr. McNess, on all your endeavors. The big news among the faculty this year came from the history department. Dr. Paul Gottfried, Chairman of the History Department, won a Guggenheim Grant to write a book on Hegel and the American Right. The Rockford College Community should be thrilled at this awards after all, the Guggenheim is one of the most prestigious awards given for scholarly endeavors and they don't pass them out to just anyone. Congratulations, Dr. Gottfried! We're proud of you. On a more lofty subject, the big news on the television scene, other than Cheers , was Ted Knight's new series, Too Close For Comfort . On the show last season, Mr. Knight wore a Rockford College t-shirt complete with Rolling This shirt was seen on network television. And speaking of the Rolling R , it is no more. President Stewart decided that we no longer needed the Rolling Instead, we will have Decus et Veritas adorning all our official stationery. The switch caused Sophomore Linda Ploenzke to remark, lf it's good enough for Ted Knight's chest, it's good enough for mel The Rolling R was not the only thing to bite the dust this year. January Intensive term was given the axe. It was done without much ceremony, fanfare or student input. We woke up one morning and voila no more intensive term. Also gone is October Day, at least in its traditional form. The fun and excitement of never knowing when October Day would happen was changed to a four-day weekend which is planned in advance. But, alas, the good President giveth as well as taketh away. We got an extra two hours of viz per day. Yes, we now have an extra two hours and fifteen minutes to be mature, sinful, or noisy depending on whom you ask. All in all, the i982 - I983 school year was not too bad. Having been given a crystal ball to look into the future, l think we will look back on this year and count our blessings. Who knows what the future holds. Maybe it will get better. Give me a call and we'll talk about it, l'm in Dayton IO7. Barne The one word I could use to describe Barnes this year was enthusiastic. lt began at the first dorm meeting when everyone decided upon a common goal. This goal was to get to know the girls around them and to participate in intramurals and other dorm activities. We really had a good time getting together for our happy hours, Wendy's walks and pre-intramural game warm-ups. The best part of our dorm was the spirit and effort among each other to work together as a team. Through the girls' efforts to participate they have experienced meaningful relationships that will be carried on throughout the years. Keep the spirit goingl Submitted by Nancy Lurton Barnes RA 6 L 1 Y 1 is ' C , fff.',?, j Emerson Ist row CI. to r.J. We couldn't find hot water, but we did find McGaw's hidden treasures, with detectives Veronica and Kelly leading the way to another pizza party. On Halloween, we piled into Big Blue and Trick-or-Treated at the Dean's. The year's excitement continued with secret pumpkins, turkeys and santas . . . our Christmas tree fell over during a fire alarm . . . our floor dinner provided enough food to feed three s Q armies! Our first offering was Aeschylus' tragedy The Oresteia with classical Greek costumes and masks. Our second production was the medieval mystery drama The Second Shepherd's Play. a celebration of Christmas presented in the Fisher Chapel. In the spring semester we paid tribute to Shakespeare with our production of The Tempest. Concluding our performing arts theatre season we sang, danced. and rollerskated our way through Stephen Schwartz's Godspell. Complementing these mainstage productions, we enjoyed an active three penny series of student produced scenes, one acts. and full length plays.
