Although the campus community is comprised of only 1,200 students, Rockford College does provide a variety of people. They range from athletes to actresses, and biologists to writers. Even with such diversity, the campus does seem to have some unity. The main bond for most students is to receive a good education for their future. With the time to study completed, socializing plays just as an important part in college life. One can't deny that the students at Rockford College know how to have a good time. One course of non-academic activities is the Social Board, which sponsors several campus-wide activities. Some of these include special movies, big events such as Homecoming Weekend, and the May Day dance. Dorm students often organize outings to parks, apple orchards, and other well-known areas of interest off campus. Dorms also sponsor their own dances and parties, which they finance through bake sales, donut days, ice cream socials, and other fun-raisers. For the competitive dorm student, intramurals keep rivalry and fun a part of regular campus life. The most popular activities must be Rockford ColIege's numerous clubs and organizations. Students often originate their own clubs, so the spectrum of activities at Rockford College will certainly continue to grow in the coming years. 8 A Closer Look 1 V ' 4 l 7 pf ,...0'wf,:.3,, 2 sg ,,-e '4. , gg his sw, 'l 7 s'c f Q f ,J 4, . ,,.., . 4 1 U 8' j 'Ml 911 Q ' If f I ,as 5 5:3 g f ,af , ga. 6 'g'-H' ia' si 1. Activities outside the classroom can be as educating as those inside, and they can be just as rewarding. Rockford College has such a large range of activities, from campus jobs to clubs to communications, that anyone can find an organization in which their talents can be put to good use. Getting involved in school organizations can provide a student with a stronger sense of accomplishment than classroom achievement at times, because the student chooses to get involved in an activity, whereas classroom projects are required. Involvement in areas outside of the classroom helps to provide a student with a complete and fulfilling college experience. xslt ie? Xi! as 12 A Closer Look 3 I I E I I I gi X-I in +I ' , 3 ,. ,, .. Laura Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860. Her father, John Addams, was the largest landholder in Stephenson County, a memberof the Illinois state legislature, and a Quaker. He was the greatest influence on Jane Addams' life. Jane Addams entered the Rockford Seminary in 1877. She was an outstanding student and was graduated with honors in 1881. After graduation, Miss Addams traveled abroad and dreamed of helping the poor. Miss Addams and a former schoolmate, Ellen Gates Starr, refurbished and established Hull House in Chicago, a neighborhood center among the immigrant population with a number of programs from day care to college courses. In 1909, Jane Addams becaue the first woman president on the National Conference on Social Welfare. She led in the fight for women's suffrage, and served as president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom from 1915 to 1929. In 1931, Miss Addams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Jane Addams died of cancer in 1935 and was buried in Cedarville in the Addams family plot. l.. .P fe ' -., V' g 1. Jane Addams Cholding parasolb and classmates at Rockford College. 2. Students had the option of taking classes for credit in lieu of the old pass-fail system. The courses offered had a more academic orientation, the old theme system having been abondoned. Students had the opportunity to take part in many social activities. Among these were ice skating, movies, tubing at Aldeen Park, ice cream socials, and basketball games.
