Chancellor Kimpton of the University of Chicago once stated that the over-riding purpose of the university is to extend the limits of man's knowledge, a worthy goal and one ap- propriate to a university. However, the central purpose of Rockford College is some- thing quite different. Our realm of research is the educational process itself. Our mission is to develop an increasingly more creative and more meaningful educational experience for the people we serve. If we are successful, Rockford students will come to understand that education is not the mere process of completing assignments, courses and degrees. These formalities facilitate the widening of horizons, but they are only the shadow of an education, the substance is the voluntary confrontation of something new, and a personal reaction to that encounter. Furthermore, genuine education cannot take place in a hothouse shielded from the pres- sures of the time. Education is sterile unless it is applicable to the present human context. The amount of knowledge a student embraces is not the critical measure of his success in our view, but rather how he evaluates what he knows iand thereby develops a per- sonal philosophyi and how his knowledge affects his performance in the tasks of human living. Toward this end, preachment, we believe, is next to futile, only example can convey the message. And here is where Rockford College differs from many of its counterparts. The traditional role of collegiate institutions is to seek to be wholly neutral on all ques- tions of controversy, hoping thus to encourage members of the academic community to reach their own conclusions. It is our contention that an institution which dodges the public issues that pertain to its own operation is misguided, and that its public neu- trality, rather than contributing to the development of individual convictions on the part of its constituency, instead, by its own example, contributes to their intellectual dis- honesty or inaction. Far better for the College to weight such questions as deeply and as obiectively as possible and take a firm institutional position according to principle and then fight for its beliefs, while welcoming dissent, than to keep silent or to run with the herd. The kind of education here envisioned also makes extra-ordinary demands upon the faculty. They, too, teach as much by example as by precept and contribute countless hours to educational proiects that transcend their classroom responsibilities. Only those deeply imbued with a sense of human service, who are genuinely rewarded by the development of their students, will stay with this mission. You, the students, will prove in your lives how well or how ill we have conceived and carried out this philosophy of education. JOHN A. The squad, when at full strength, numbered no more than ten. The season's low was reached when Coach DeWild traveled to Augustana with seven hopefuls. Ron Carlson, big 6'6 pivot, was sidelined with torn ankle liga- ments, and Bill Schilling, senior spark-plug, was downed for the count by the extrac- tion of seven teeth. lvlidterms cut the squad further, but the addition of freshman Duane Hazzard and i962-63 lettermen Al Wales and Dick Alfors brought the Regents up to normal strength, enabling them to finish the season. Despite all the handicaps the fellows worked hard and gave many creditable per- tormances. Ron Balsam SWIMMING With only five returning lettermen, the Rockford College swimming team got off to a good start and won the first two meets of the season, but the highlight occurred when Rockford hosted the Second Annual Rockford Invitational Swim- ming Relays. Illinois Wesleyan University placed first of the six teams. Rockford tied for fourth. Although Rockford College was given little chance of finishing in first place, the Regents did come through in two of the events and won the first trophies that a Rockford College swimming team has ever won. Winning the first trophy in the 300-yard individual medley relay were Richter, Young, and Messman. Richter, Young, Messman, and Sobel won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The loss of Don Balsam and Pete Larratt at semesters limited the Regents in diving and the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Larratt holds the college records in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Mike Messman, who has been an outstanding competitor for the Rockford College swimming team during the past two years, led the team in points scored. Mess- man holds the Rockford College swimming records in five individual events and is a member of both record-holding relay teams. Close behind Messman in individual paint standings is Fred Young, who holds two of the college's swim records and is a member of the record-holding 400-yard medley relay team. Tom Richter and Pete Sobel are in third and fourth places respectively. Both have contributed considerably to the team, and each holds a share of the college relay records. Newcomers to the team included Ron Balsam who, with brother Don, helped in the diving competition, and Nat Clark and Nick Messersmith who contributed in the long-distance freestyle events. Nick is a member of the record-holding 400-yard freestyle relay team. 117 Standing: Robert Cooke Andy Loewe Ernst Bonhomme Francois Robert Barry Hulin Gerald Bonhomme Stu Goodwin Abudi Kobai Manley Burton Mr. Adrian Parmefer Kneeling: Ron Nedovich Chuch Villefte Andy Hiller Sfeve Marshall Dave Adams Don Ake Ken Mowll Ngoan Van Hoang Eliud Mondo Will you guys please get of? my dew Rockforcls only Beattle in action. After losing its first three games, our soccer team came roaring back to win eight straight games to finish an excellent, first season with an eight win-three loss record and a close bid for the NCAA Regional Soccer Tourney playoff. With ten starters back next year and a more seasoned team, Rockford will be shooting for the NCAA Tourney and an outstanding season, We have a score to settle with both University of Illinois-Chicago and Lake Forest. Defensive play and lack of reserve strength was a problem all season, but some of the offensive play was brilliant. Team captain Ron Nedo- vich, with thirty goals for the season, and Barry l-lulin, with twenty-two goals, were the finest offensive men we saw all year. One last note-our foreign students who dominated the starting line-up HO out of ll starters ldeserve a vote of thanks from the whole stu- dent body for making soccer an important part of our athletic year.
