On the one hand it marks an event to be greeted with pride and a renewed confidence in the future of a distinguished institution which has long served the interests of education. On the other hand, the Rockford family must view, with profound regret, the culmination of a brilliant seventeen years of service so lztbly provided by its president, Dr. Mary Ashby Cheek. The one hundredth commencement marks a milestone in the college's achievement and portends even greater potentialities of accomplishment, especially when they rest so securely on the 'demonstrable successes of the past. In like manner, Dr. Cheek's own career represents the essential distillation of the spirit which has made Rockford College the vital institution it is. It is therefore fitting that we, the Rockford College family, dedicate this book to Dr. Cheek. lt is a capsule record of one year, of many years, unique and yet sustained by a rich tradition, preserving that which is substantial while adopting aspects of refreshing novelty. To achieve such a delicate balance between the values of the past and the present, broad vision and deep perception is required. Dr. Cheek has such perspective. Rockford's regret at the departure of such a distinguished woman can be mitigated only by the thought that her services will be continued and that others, beyond the college family, will come to know the meaning of the selfless dedication which has defined the life of Dr. Mary Ashby Cheek.
