On the one hand it marks an event to be greeted with pride and a renewed confidence in the future of a distinguished institution which has long served the interests of education. On the other hand, the Rockford family must view, with profound regret, the culmination of a brilliant seventeen years of service so lztbly provided by its president, Dr. Mary Ashby Cheek. The one hundredth commencement marks a milestone in the college's achievement and portends even greater potentialities of accomplishment, especially when they rest so securely on the 'demonstrable successes of the past. In like manner, Dr. Cheek's own career represents the essential distillation of the spirit which has made Rockford College the vital institution it is. It is therefore fitting that we, the Rockford College family, dedicate this book to Dr. Cheek. lt is a capsule record of one year, of many years, unique and yet sustained by a rich tradition, preserving that which is substantial while adopting aspects of refreshing novelty. To achieve such a delicate balance between the values of the past and the present, broad vision and deep perception is required. Dr. Cheek has such perspective. Rockford's regret at the departure of such a distinguished woman can be mitigated only by the thought that her services will be continued and that others, beyond the college family, will come to know the meaning of the selfless dedication which has defined the life of Dr. Mary Ashby Cheek. What was left of our class returned in September and we started the year off with a bang by electing loan Bye as president of our class. After senior day, we iacketless juniors marched and marched with the traditional ivy in our hair. Our class was depleted but we were glad to greet Sue Williams, Gerry Swan, Bev Stein, Sue Carlson, Christiane Dumbard, Olga Zarnari, Sally Chabucos, and Lillian Vesely. Soon everyone was back in the swing of exams, papers, getting in those last few major hours and carrying all those extra-curricular activities, tdates, dates, and more datesl. Our class certainly didn't outshine the other classes in basketball or hockey, but we did try!! Enthusiasm wasn't lacking, but participants were it seemed. How sad we were all to see those seniors leaving but it was certainly a feeling oi accomplishment to take over the senior role. Now we have the worries ot comprehensives. .,.n- s. ' ' A A . And those awful upperclassmen could no longer sing about the greenness of the ireshies. Now they wished we'd be drowned in turpentine! Our class had reduced considerably since our first meeting in fall of '52. Two of our freshman class officers failed to return, several others were lost through engagements, one even going as far as Germany. Yes, our original class membership dropped, but it was given a push upward again by the arrival of some new sophs, both town and dorm residents. We welcomed into our midst Edie Dvmond, Lee Currier, Geri Brown, Gwen Wait, and of course, Bert Rockey. And who could forget our losing Kati at the end of the first semester? It wasn't real until we heard her say, I do. We didn't do too well in basketball, but looked better during volleyball season. We surprised the school by giving them a new kind of Sophomore Day. We had to finally declare a major, and take those traditional Sophomore Tests. Lastly, we ended the first half of our college career under President Cheek, and so had to look elsewhere for further guidance and inspiration. ,. Yes, we were greene e in September. But by now we too have caught the spirit of friendship at old R. C. The girl across the hall was from California, the girl down the hall from New York, and then there always were those gals from Chicago and Rockford. Thev said that high school was tough, and so we asked, Who were they kidding? We never knew there was so much to learn, and in so short a time. Then they gave us eleven o'clock lights! Lastly, we had our Freshman Show right near mid term exams. We really showed them that the class of '57 had what it takes. We came in last in basketball, but certainly not due to lack ol team spirit or interest in general. The Seniors, Iuniors, and Sopho mores had their days, and then it was our turn! We had our customary picnic at the college farm, the evening of our day. The newness had finally worn off and we anxiouslv looked forward to next vear, when it would be our turn to plan Sophomore Day! I -. LEFT TO RIGHT, BACK ROW: Stella, Brunst, Uglum, Bergstrom, A.
