INFIRMARY MADDOX HOUSE AND SERVICE THE FACULTY The faculty constitute the skilled workers who design the architecture of the building, thus making it a working whole. They spend hours as apprentices to their profession before they can be called skilled workers. Their devotion to their work has enabled us to become the Finished product. It is said that the faculty make the school, and that is true here at Rockford College. Without them there could be no school. Sometimes it is a long and difficult process to turn out the finished product fthe seniorl. However, the faculty have the time, endurance, skill and patience to take this undeveloped material and produce, out of it, a finished product. ln the raw material there are 'defects which must be altered and-or corrected before it is even possible to create a whole. There is another vital responsibility of the skilled workers toward the student, that is to de- velop them into more alert and mature people who can be sent into the world with a true sense of awareness. As the other skilled workers and finished products before us, we are indebted to our skilled faculty, who have made it possible for us to recognize the need to become such individuals. Rockford College is such a building. lt's material creators were the hands that worked over it such long years ago. They were the builders in tact, they were the masons in deed. But each generation of students here has brought another type of masonry-a type without which all the brick, iron, steel, stone, plaster and glass in the world would mean absolutely nothing-a masonry in thought, building with careful hand and hopeful heart brick upon brick oi just law and sensitive judgment of this law, until at last, there comes to exist a Framework of solidified dreams beneath the impersonal steel framework of what might have been just another building. SGA and judicialfouncil are manifestations of the work of one hundred and four years ol students in their strivings to attain mature sell-government. The object of their struggle is to create a foundation, not For a block area oi school buildings, but For a world area of tree, democratic citizens. This human foundation is alive and growingn-it does not end with the ground on which it is built: it's principles ot building spread and are accepted everywhere where there are people who believe in the worth of each individual's contribution to a group, ora state, ora world. At Rockford, we know this value. Some perhaps are not immediately or acutely conscious of it, but all of us, should the principles of democracy be threatened, would be quick to fully realize and defend the truth of the basic theory on which our democracy is founded. That each person counts lor one-not more and not less. That each person has a right to voice his one and to help formulate the laws that are to rule him and his fellows. Qur judicial Council contributes to the encouragement of a democratic system in that it helps us experience, through judging and being judged, that the rule of the many can benefit the few. ltdoes this by having an honest, impartial judging body which realizes the importance of tempering judgment with a humane regard for mitigating circumstances and lor consideration oi the intent rather than the act, Together, SGA and judicial Council form the source and stream of the democratic impulse which runs through a small college in the town ol Rockford, Illinois. 14 Z 1 4 62 ,I X 9 -'JI ff. - ...... 0 lik!! Each of us brought her dreams and plans for herself and her college. During the course oi the year, itwasourjobto correlate individual ideas into a worlcable plan for the good of the class. We began with orientation, the first step toward the solidification of our class. With this lcnowledge behind us, and a year ahead in which to realize our goals, we began to take part in college life. Our first court sing afforded us the opportunity to show our upperclassman the quality oi our collective voice, a voice that has been raised since in gleeiul shouts on October Day, raised with firm commands at the Freshman Show, and with true notes at our liirst caroling. Friendships were becoming strong and fast, and through these friendships we felt the real meaning of our class and the college as a whole. Our spirit grew as we worlced along, we added our bit to the college by new ideas and cooperation. We held class meetings and elected our leaders who were to see us successfully through our Freshman year. We were, by Christmas, part and parcel of the college and had already made our marlc. We got through midterm exams, and began a new semester with the determination to do still better. But the day we had all been waiting for, the dayin which we finally claimed full possession oi our rights was yet to come. The culmination came when we caroled through the halls, announcing FRESHMAN DAY. We celebrated our recognition as part of the college, worthy of notice and appreciation. We found that by adding our individual merits together we had become capable of carrying on our part oi life at Roclciord College. As a class, we loolt forward to the next years with hopes, plans, and iaith. FRESHMAN OFFICERS Back Row: Jax, Gilchrist, Sedg- wick, Squier, Bute. Front Row: Watkins, Cohoe, Grif- fith, Bollinger. Faculty think sophomores are immature children, seniors think sophomores are must-be-tolerated little sisters, juniors think sophomores are misfits in the college life, freshmen think sophomores are pretentious bookworms, and sophomores think sophomores are Plato's philosopher-kings. Rockford Colleges sophomores are a curious combina- tion of the intellectual and nonsensical. They are the problem babies of the community. They are the putty in the hands of the social and intellectual forces, waiting to be formed into finished, matured individuals. They are to these forces within the College, as bricks are to the skilled bricklayer. The sophomores have half mastered the basic arts ol learning, reasoning and understandinglhey have half mastered the art of moderation in their social life. They need skilled faculty help in integrating these intellectual and social Facets ol their life into one basic force for useful living. Similarly, bricks have the potentiality of being parts oi a beautiful useful whole. They need the skilled bricklayer to give their sturdy, substantial, but rough bodies, their proper places in the great work. Sophomores-bricks. Not compared facetiously, but compared as corresponding parts of Finished works. sophomores are the raw material that the College needs for producing its graduates. Bricks are the raw material the builder needs for producing the final structure. Exploring further the similarity, sophomores become bricks that are transformed into the final solid structure of understanding that the College regards as its product. Raw material, but not waste. The building is built, the briclcs are laid, the outer wells are up -and now lor the rooms themselves. l-lere come the juniors, dividing into sections, each one building the wall for the room ol her choice, separating into the sciences, the language and literature, the arts, and the social studies divisions. Now is the time for decision. The foundation has been cemented and secured, the partitions must now be raised. Yet each wall, joined together by a strong bond ol common interest and understanding, forms a part ol the next room. Not only do they divide into separate rooms according to academic interests, but the same type of division occurs in extracurricular activities. Some are active in groups related to their major Fields, some loolc into other rooms, seelting new interests. Already some have started to learn the lesson ol assuming the responsibility of a leader, which many will talte over when the ivy wreaths are laid aside. -lhese are strong walls, supported by spring seminars and junior summers which confirm the juniors' decisions. Because building is Familiar to all people, whether it is the hammering together of a bird house or the planned construction of a skyscraper. Why? Because whether hammering together a bird house or planning the construction ol a skyscraper there is always a specified goal. Whether or not this goal is achieved depends upon the force behind it. Why? Because when hammering together a bird house or planning the construction of a skyscraper, a founda- tion is needed. Gne starts from the bottom up. ln constructing, buildings are often thrown together hurriedly without planning or lore- thought. A quick job looks nice but never lasts long. Here at Rockford we are given a four year building program, a program with a specified goal-the knowledge ol scholarly work combined with the lacility to cope with lile. You are the Force behind this goal. Our foundation built here at Rockford College is a foundation that is flexible enough to absorb shocks, firm enough to hold the frame against storms, and fine enough to be ap- preciated by all architects The construction is not thrown hurriedly together without forethought. For over one hundred years the plan has been developed and enlarged upon by the dent of progress. 'Each class has been built by able hands and helpers and each new class is ready for -the fresh cement to be laid. 4 llBgiBuilding lorbetter things in the future is the best of Rocklord's traditions.
