And yet this spirit is not altogether gone, for who could have known Mrs. Short and not have been influenced by her character and personality? Such a spirit can not be lost. a o Q o 4 o , , , , g Forexx Ord 1611 01 111x N1 1111 S111r110s C111 11111101 1111r 1 1r11111'11 x 1r1110N xx Q111111 11111r11z1 101 WCTIIILC 1111 LIN 1 TL 11111101111111 Ll N 1 N 1 J L1 11N U1 11x 1 ' ' N 1 111 111 r1111 1111 II 11111 1 1r1 1 NIITXIXI ll' TW NL W1 111 1rC K 1 1 111 1 1 1 1 IL 111 1 111r IN 1 1 N 111 111 1 1 1 111 1r1x1111111s11111rx1 x 1 1 LNXLK xx 1 r 1L1111 1111 Lll 111r1 KLINL1 N 1lIILL N rn 11 N111111 111 11 WL LL 1 llN Tl '111 -i1'1f. 1 3 1 'lf 11 '. Our College Government Board is legislative: it makes, revises, or abandons rules. according to the need of the college. Board is also executive: it co-operates with the faculty in carrying out the recommendations of that body, and sees that all rulings are put into effect. The judicial function of the College Government Association is fulfilled through a committee which has as its chairman the Vice-President of the organization. In this way individual cases may be thoroughly examined and the decisions rendered may be truly just. Tolo Initiation marked the real beginning of our college life. After that day of enforced silence and smothered laughter We were accepted as a class. Wie felt our own individuality and eagerly avvaitedthe chance to prove that we were capable of doing original work. Freshman Day gave us that opportunity. In Working on the freshman play we gained confidence in our independent creative ability. Wie hope that We, the flrst Freshman class to give a serenade on Freshman Day, have added our bit to Rockford tradition. Freshman Prom! One glorious evening of dancing anticipated for weeks and remembered for monthsl It was overshadowed only by hlay Party which further developed our sense of responsibility through our part in its production. lXfIore than that-it brought vividly to us the conception of Rockford's highest ideal. THE CIRCUS COME TO TOWN The first week end after Christmas vacation, Rockford College had 'the privilege of seeing the greatest show on earth under rafters. The athletic association presented at that time its annual circus under the direction of Betty llercer. With the opening of the sideshows there was a great hue and cry, and. all rushed to see the ventriloquist, the midget tap dancers, and to have their fortune told. The ring show, announced by the stentorian tones of the mighty ringmaster,Janet Hall, offered the greatest collection of talented animals on earth. Among the high spots of the show were the giraffes, which entertained with a tap-dance. Furthermore, the sawdust trail led to prosperity for the athletic association. The qualihcations which have existed in their present form since nineteen hundred seven are as follows: lfirst. the Xlay Queen must be a member of the Senior Class. having been at Rockford College for four years. Secondly. she must be an all-round Rockford College Girl--Yunconditioned in her academic work, en- thusiastic. helpful. unsellish. co-operative, dignified and gracious. Thirdly. the Rockford College Xlay Queen shall be a girl who is tolerant and versatile enough In be able to adjust herself to every group of college mates. lfourth- ly. she shall be strong enough to have influenced college and student policy in a constructive way. lfifthly, she shall be a girl who is capable of realizing the prodigious responsibility that the title of Xlay Queen entails. l,astly, she shall be kind. 'llhe students and faculty desire to perpetuate these qualities by voting for one who holds high the ideals of Rockford. Her election is kept secret until she appears with her attendants on Xlay Day. The old queen returns to crown the new with violets, who in turn crowns the old queen with forget-me-nots. 4 1 1 ,ir 5.
