Rockford College ARCHIVES THE CUPOLA of ROCKFORD COLLEGE ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS EDITED BY THE JUNIOR CLASS IN 1927 FOREWORD To edit a representative reflection of life at Rockjord College that those interested may see by what we live, and that we may turn to recall through these pages friend- ships, accomplishments, and ideals of our college life has been the aim of the staff of the IQ2S Cupola. CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ACADEMICS ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES ADVERTISEMENTS DEDICATION Through years of untiring effort and de votion to the aspirations of our college, she has not only promoted artistic expres- sion but has endeared herself to Rockford hearts. TO MRS. SHORT The Class of 1928 dedicates The Cupola. Campus Views ' Z.O. ' where the rosy-bosom d Hours. Fair Venus ' train, appear, Disclose the long-expecting flowers And wake the purple year! The Attic warbler pours her throat Responsive to the cuckoo ' s note. The untaught harmony of Spring: While, whispering pleasure as they fly, Cool Zephrys thro ' the clear blue sky Their gather d fragrance fling. ' Still is the toiling hand of Care; The panting herds repose: Yet hark, how thro ' the peopled air The busy murmur glows! The insect-youth are on the wing, Eager to taste the honied spring And float amid the liquid noon: Some lightly o ' er the current skim, Some show their gaily-gilded trim Quick-glancing to the sun. ' — Gray A Glooms of the live oaks, beautiful-braided and woven With intricate shades of the vines that myriad-cloven Chamber the forks of the multiform boughs,- () braided dusks of the oak and shades of the vine. While the riotous noon-day sun of the J une day long did shine y Ye held me fast in your heart and I held you fast in mine. — Lanier ' Tis the noon of autumn s glow, When a soft and purple mist Like a vaporous amethyst, Or an air-dissolved star Mingling light and fragrance, far From the curved horizon ' s bound To the point of heaven ' s profound: Fills the overflowing sky; And the plains that silent lie Underneath; the leaves unsodden Where the infant Frost has trodden Ji ith his morning-winged feet Whose bright print is gleaming yet; And the red and golden vines Piercing with their trellised lines The rough, dark-skirted wilderness; The dun and bladed grass no less, Pointing from this hoary tower In the windless air; the flower Glimmering at my feet ' — Shelley Come when the rains Have glazed the snow and clothed the trees with ice, (Chile the slanting sun of February pours Into the bowers a Hood of light. Look! the massy trunks Are cased in the pure crystal; each light spray, Nodding and twinkling in the breath of heaven Is studded with its trembling -water-drops. That glimmer with an amethystine light. — Bryant Four Seasons till the measure of the year; There are four seasons in the mind of man; lie has his lusty Spring, when fancy clear Takes in all beauty with an easy span: He has his Summer, token luxuriously Spring ' s honey ' d cud of youthful thought he loves To ruminate, and by such dreaming high Is nearest unto heaven: quiet coves His soul has in its Autumn, when his wings lie furleth close, contented so to look On mists in idleness — to let fair things Pass by unheeded as a threshold brook. He has his I! inter too of pale misfeature. Or else he would forego his mortal nature. — Keats THE OFFICERS OF THE ADMINISTRATION William A. Maddox, Ph.D., LL.D. Ellen T. Gould .... Lorena M. SENIOR DAY We search with hungry heart — uncertain brain — For that which to our minds seems real And everlasting — be it born of brush or pen Or chisel ' s genius stroke — whose worth we feel. Irresolute, perhaps, we pass through halls of art — Museums — galleries old; or delve ' mid Books of bygone men, within whose hearts We search out eagerly the passions hid. For hearts untaught how great this journey is! But, oh! how much more potent will it be For those whose footsteps follow paths Hewn straight by leaders, all unfalteringly! So easy we may find this well-marked path, So open to our entrance is it shaped, Its very sureness irks our changeful minds; We sigh, at times, for hindrances escaped; But eagerness will draw us always on With chains too strong for our poor fancy ' s whim To break or loose; and as we go, the way Grows more enticing, and the path less dim. Now — pausing — checked by forces not our own, By realization ' s undisputed sway, W T e bow our heads in humble gratitude For entrance to this ever-fruitful way. — Rachel E. Its coming was proclaimed By vague excitement, murmurs, and a whirl Of hurried meetings and committees named, And near the stair A poster fair. Announcing Everygirl . The night arrived; a rush — A pause uncertain; A sea of faces and of watching eyes; Fast beating hearts; a hush — The op ' ning curtain. And then a baby ' s shrill, defiant cries. Her parents, standing near, discuss the question Of what to call her; in the aunties came; The nurse at length advanced a wise suggestion, And Everygirl was chosen as her name. Years passed, with Everygirl shown entertaining Her friends upon her birthday — with great glee; And then at High School graduation reigning, By shouting forth the valedictory. Next Freshman days and dread Initiation, And glimpes of her college life were seen; A.nd then May Party — honored celebration — Portraying Everygirl enthroned as queen. A calm; a long drawn O-o-o-o — Faint music blended With roses, and a whisper in the air; The bridal party; so The play was ended With Everygirl before the altar there. The Freshman Play! Its closing brought a hum Of comments and applause — a mingled swirl Of voices, with a thankful sigh in some. Success came true, Class Spirit grew, All due to Everygirl . — Genevieve Blane, ' 30 ' Fair hangs the apple frae the rock, But we will leave it growing. ' — Wordsworth PUBLICATIONS PURPLE PARROT During the past seven years. The Purple Parrot has been growing toward an adequate weekly newspaper for the college, edited by a student staff, for its five hundred readers. The aim of The Purple Parrot has been to present student problems and passing news in the light of their relations to the significant move- ments in the college of the day. In addition to presenting issues, the Parrot aims to present student opinion upon these issues and has provided a Public Opinion Column of relatively unlimited space for any expression of such opinion. An attempt to achieve closer contact between students and faculty members, as well as to secure maturer outlooks upon some college interests and problems, was made during the past year. The success was due to the cooperation of several of the faculty members whose contributions formed a series of articles appearing in the regular enlarged issue each month. The Parrot also strives to keep the students acquainted with world problems through a current events column made possible through cooperation with the League of V omen oters. These movements have been in accord with the main plank of the Parrot ' s policy: to achieve an active group consciousness at Rockford College. It aims to give the student body a desire for that group harmony which is equally necessary to a good play and a good life. Many purchases of permanent equipment this year have greatly extended the range of production, while the continued direction of Dr. Potts has built up a force- ful nucleus of students, expert in the various divisions of the club ' s activities. Both students and faculty contribute to the discussions and take part in the programs. The effort is always to make plain the significance of the work now being done in these sciences, rather than to give detailed accounts of technical procedures. Speakers from other departments ,in the college and from town aid in showing the relationship of the physical sciences to other fields of learning and to the com- munity. The club meets regularly throughout the year. Anyone interested is welcome. THE EVERY DAY CLUB A day ' s portion every day is the motto of this unique club — a club with a philosophy of life, but without organization, officers, or dues. JUST FOR TODAY Lord, for tomorrow and its needs I do not pray; Keep me, my God, from stain of sin Just for today. ' The threads of time slip into place and weave into a tapestry of intricate design, the changing seasons. ' Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and the harvest, tenderly loved her daughter, Persephone. hen, then, Persephone was stolen away and married to Hades, grim ruler of the lower world, Demeter swore that until her daughter was restored to her she would not allow the grain to spring forth from the earth. Through the intercession of Zeus, Persephone was finally restored to her mother, but only with the agreement that she was to spend a part of each year as the joyless companion of the grim lord below. Thus, according to the ancient Greeks, came the changing seasons, with the recurring mourning for Persephone ' s loss and rejoicing at her return — the cycle of the seasons as shown on the sands of time. The pageant, beginning and ending with the turning of the hourglass, was danced in honor of Marion Chinn, the May Queen, who because of her unselfish- ness, kindness, and wisdom was the symbol of Rockford ' s ideal. Marian Chinn, May Queen ' Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare? — Keats ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Those girls who have won one hundred points in athletics are eligible for membership in the Athletic Association. DANCING One of the most popular channels of self-expression at Rockford College is dancing. Inhibitions may be unknotted and surplus energy worked off in natural dancing, clogging, and folk dancing. At Hallowe ' en, ashington Party, Indoor Meet, and May Party, the members of the classes show something of the work, fun, and aesthetic satisfaction experienced in the courses offered by the Physical Education Department during the winter and spring terms. INDOOR M E E T This year the indoor meet was more a demonstration of activities than a strictly competitive meet, as the Physical Education Department has put more emphasis on sports than gymnastic work. The competition was both inter and intra class in marching and floor work. The cup presented by Dr. Von Eisen Bockus was awarded to the Junior Class for making the greatest number of points, .the Sophomores winning second place, and the Freshmen third. List of events: I. In warm weather the courts are always filled with players. In the spring, teams are selected, and the tennis matches are played. The championship team is chosen on Field Day. B A SKETBALL Although a comparatively new sport at Rockford, baseball shows a large class enrollment. This year it is a major sport. Last year a Freshman, a Sopho- more, and a combination team of Juniors and Seniors were formed, the Freshmen winning the championship. ARCHERY Archery was one of the first minor sports to be established at Rockford. Every spring the target appears on the campus, and many girls may be seen practicing with bows and arrows. The green roll of the terrace and the slow movement of the river form a fitting background for this unique pastime. SWIMMING This year a series of beginning and advanced tests for swimming honors were given under the direction of Miss Petrosky, and because of these there has been unusual progress in this sport. Class teams competed in a swimming meet at the end of the season. Life saving, one of the most practical activities at Rockford College, has a twofold purpose: to strengthen the swimming of the individual and to enable her to be of assistance to others. The unusually large class this year is con- vincing evidence that the art is a popular one. Under the competent guidance of Miss Petroskey the life saving classes have accomplished a great deal this year.
