It is midnight and the little elf men and dryads are having their nightly frolic. The unexpected sound of a mortal's step causes them to Hee to the deeper shadows of the forest. Aminta, a shepherd, appears piping his song of love. He pauses to rest in the silence of the night, and dreams of Sylvia, the most beautiful and favored nymph of Diana. Previously, from some point of vantage he has seen her dancing and here again is his fondest dream realized as he beholds her from his hiding place, playing in the silvery moonlight. His surprise and fear upon being discovered by some of the nymphs are com- pletely lost in his great admiration for her as he kneels humbly at her feet and pleads for recognition of his love. Suddenly, in a fit of anger, because of his in- trusion and persistence, she raises her bow and releases the arrow which causes his death. With a defiant glance at the statue she hastens to her retreat. Just before the first glow of dawn appears in the east, the little elves and dryads carry the body of this beloved shepherd to a place of concealment. Dawn heralds the day, and soon the forest is filled with sunshine. The mortals then occupy the earth. As soon as the shadows of night have again fallen, Sylvia, whose heart is now filled with sorrow and regret, returns in search of the body of her devoted lover. Upon failing to find it she falls prostrate before the statue. hfeanwhile the nymphs have made a discovery, Aminta's body is found, and the God of Love revives him with a rose. There is much surprise and rejoicing over this miracle and after an ensemble for Aminta's pleasure, the happy cortege adjourns to Diana's Temple. IAJ I I lass uf '24 Dear Folks: Last night I had an awful dream, my roommate said she heard ine scream, and I recall at least a ream of things I saw and did. The first thing I remember is a scene of last September. when I first became a member of R. C. 'neath ivy hid. I was out beneath the apple tree, the apples seemed to rain on me, when Isadore on just one ski approaches from the rear. She stops and gives me warning, that at 5 A. M. next morning I had best be up adorning. for 'tis Ivy Day. I hear. Then I see, in early morning iight, the Juniors intheir gowns of white, all watch- ing with supreme delight the ivy climb the side. The next I see is Middle Hall and there are hockey team and ball. and in the front stands Helen Call, Miss Hyde, will you decide? The angle must have sine of S, the distance you will find in rate, do you think I can put on weight? ' poor Helen seems so pale. The In- gleterra I see then. a dance at which there are no men, they just have snapped our picture. when strange stifling smells assail. Lieutenants rush and lower shades, tit seems as tho they're used to raidst, the roll is quickly called by grades, and now arrives the hero. A man resembling .Iohn and Fred walks boldly up without a dread, and quickly halts the Haines of red, for he is not like Nero. Again I see the hall in Middle, l hear men's voices and a fiddle, and now what seems to be the riddle, strange sights do greet my eyes. I see many girls with pig tails, one dress pump, one shoe with hob nails, and we think that there must be sales in those bright green tail ties. Now we all are down at dinner: we have beef. while Sara Skinner has chicken. as the winner ot' a prize from linglish 1. She could best describe the taste of the chicken which was placed at her seat, and we all raced past temptation on the run. Next the gym claims my attention, upper classmen, not to mention freshmen with a plain intentiontopresent a snappy show. Everybody seems excited, many guests have been invited, in the gym so brightly lighted we are waiting row and row. Finally now the curtain rises, comes the greatest surprises, .Xnne proclaims, For exercises we will sing Selection Three . Now I see the Mock Prom night, men in dark and girls in light, there we saw full many a sight, which will stay in memory. We have all just gotten in, and we're ready to begin, just as soon as Sal and Min bring our food into the room. Why does each one seem to start, put her hand up to her heart, as she looks up toward that cart and upon it sees her doom? For instead of things to eat, there are piles of Blue Books neat, one is put at each one's seat with a pencil by it's side. The instructions arc to write for each morning. noon, and night, a month's menu that would make each girl well satisfied. Queer that I should see that field where the hockey sticks we wield. where the Sophomores didn't yield, tho we tried our hardest there. But the strangest team I see, Juniors dressed, not for hockey, but for some peculiar spree. and it looks like County Fair. Now the setting is the pool, but in spite of strictest rule, anyone who would be cool just jumps in with all her clothes. It's the night of NYashington Party, and each George so hail and hearty, oft the spring board like a dart, he tries to surpass all his foes. 1 Cl Page 5: f li I LL Suddcnly Illll wildly XV0l'lill1QQ, pulling, cutting, winding, jerking, llltllilllg flowcrs which zu'0 lurking i11 Illy d0sk, hed, fll'OSS0l', chaiirs. L'Hostis, who were both interested in the activities of the club, we have been fortunate this year in having as additions to our group, Mlle. Bouchon, a native of France, and Miss Givens, the head of the French department. Under their leadership, and with the assistance of Mlle. Brunaud, LeCercle Petain has been very suc- cessful. It has acquired many new and active members from the Class of '24. This was only our second year, but with the success of this year and last year, We are assured that we have as fine a French club as any college boasts of. At the meetings, French songs are sung, and interesting talks and readings about France were given. A program committee, consisting of the officers of the club, the Professor of French, and the instructors, Lucile Lathrop, and Carol Armstrong arrange the programs for the bi-Weekly meetings. Strong competition for places on the teams made the squad practice gzgaines hard fought. There is no use comment- ing on the infirmities of the hockey field, but in wet weather the lower end, ac- companied by a few crackers, would have made an admirable soup course. The teams were announced by Miss Chadwick, the coach, at the Hockey rally on the night of Nov. 9. The program was closed with yells, cheers, and congratu- lations for the newly chosen and deserving members of the teams. There were days of intensive practice and then, on Thursday, Nov. 18, the Freshmen defeated the Juniors 4-0 in the first preliininary game. The following day, in the process of elimination, the Sophomores won from their sister class by a score of 2-1. On Saturday, there was a Senior College vs. Junior College game, which resulted favorably for the disheartened Juniors and Seniors. In the chill and damp of Monday morning, Nov. 22, the Juniors were forced to accept the Ancient and Honorable Tin Cup, after a 3-2 game in favor of the Seniors. That afternoon, the Sophomore and Freshman teams bullied off for the final game. The Sophomores came off the field the champions of the season, with 7 goals to the FI'E'Sl111lOHlS 1. The much-coveted cup was presented to them im- mediately afterward in the Oyin. f za. The Seniors attained the hundred percent training mark they had aimed for, and after the official and enjoyable breaking of training, more good food was in store for the teams, their cheer leaders, and the coaches at the annual hockey banquet. l ' 1 f 1 Pagr , I , x ,,---.i ul 'f f 1 1' . Slowly took they their positions, Formed they into several groups. Dignified bow and graceful eurtseyg A few slow steps--another bowg Thus, the dance of age old beauty C harmed the gathering of the evening. Ever loved and more beloved Is this staid old ininuet. Softer music, and yet softer Was it heard, as now the couples Slowly passed from dancing floor. But ever does the memory linger Of the lovely, stately dance. When the dances then were over, Couples lined up for the march, For the grand march of the evening, When by stately twos and fours, Wound their way about the dance floor. Down the room by twos, then fours- Then by eights the couples came, Lovely in their gowns of old times, 'Mongst the softly shaded lights. Soon the march gave way to dancing And the couples whirled away, Whirled about in modern step-- Steps so foreign to the costumes, Yet, withal, a trifle dignified By the dignity of the costume. Thus the evening passed too quickly, Soon, good-nights were said, by all. But still within our memory linger Thots of happy hours spent, Thots of maidens all attired In the d1'ess of long ago, Thot's of maids as dainty Marthas, Thotfs of maids as stalwart Georges- Thot's of bows and deepest curtseys. Each act was announced by a page with a large placard bearing the title of the act. First, Marion Akagi appeared in a juggling act, in which she performed several very clever tricks with balls. She wore one of her Japanese costumes which gave a charming effect. In the second act, an old fashioned, tormented instructor, a t'sissy with curls and stiff white collar, a mischievous urchin, and the big fellow in overalls with much talent in the art of chewing gum, all foimed the entertaining District Skule. Sunbeams from the South was an act in which some very black faced girls did the latest clog steps. The fourth act was a short play entitled Busy Please . The setting, that of a girl's school, was well carried out, and the actiesses all performed with marked ability and ease. The audience was next entertained by a dancing number, done by Mr. and Mrs. Yermin Castelle. Interesting Variations of the latest dances were given. In the sixth act, Shoe Polish, a most amusing little figure, appeared. By means of two girls, one behind the curtain, the figure seemed to have a huge waist, natural sized head and arms, and extremely small feet, which kept time to the music of the songs that the strange creature sang. Most appealing was the next act in which models displayed a variety of lovely clothes, obtained for the evening from Rockford's leading stores. There we1'e street costumes, afternoon dresses, evening gowns, and negligees. Mile. Brunard had the persuasive appeal typical of a Parisian modiste. Soft, slow music was played while the models displayed their fascinating attires. P The next was an act of mysticism by Ouija and 'tJazzyfoot . Questions were answered and articles identified, in spite of the covered eyes of Ouija. The tenth act was a delightful double piano number, which was encored again and again. In the finale, the Sophomores appeared in a chorus of singing and dancing. The program was extremely entertaining, was well managed, and showed the Sophomore class to be one of much talent. l l ' Page 107 .i'f- ,ii- -,, . To THE FREsHMAN: Getting up in the cold, gray dawn to watch shivering Juniors tip-toe about, trying to adjust prickly ivy crowns. For some strange reason, we were expected to find untold thrills in Watching a bottle of grape-juice be broken over a few little leaves that would never grow anyway. Afterwards, the Juniors had a lovely time at a Breakfast Banquet, singing songs and eating- well, lots of things not usually included in the breakfast menu. Did the Freshmen send them candy? Someone thanked me for some. To THE SoPHoMoRE: Whatfs that noise in the court? Oh, the Juniors are having Ivy Day. Ho! Hum! I'm glad I'm not out there in the cold. Silly idea, isn't it? We 1nusn't forget to send them something. To THE JUN1oRs: A cold early dawn, but it is nice to be the whole show . But aside from that, and the spiffy breakfast, there is a deep and beautiful sig- nificance in this lovely old custom. lt does make your throat a little tighter, as you march up the chapel aisle. To THE SENIOR: Tender, slightly whimsical memories of last year's Ivy Day: when We were the chief actors. Yes, this Ivy Day was just as cold, and just as dark, and just as hard a day to rise early as Ivy Days have always been. I'll introduce you to him. He's adorable, and just think, I haven't seen him since last summer. The phone rings. For me? Oh, my. he's here! Do I look all right? How's my hair? It's 1ny first m:1rcel. She trips excitedly toward the stairs, tottering a little on her high heels. Let us imagine there is an interval of about six hours and a half. Six hours and a half of perfect joy and bliss, for when one is young, a Freshman in fact, with a perfect man, amidst perfect surroundings, to the tune of perfect music, what else can be expected? But to be less general. Dinner in a garden of sweet peas, with the most de- lightful and amusing acts between the courses, took up the first part of the even- ing. But the Prom proper in the gym was the nicer part. That rather stiff, un- compromising place had been turned into a gracious fairy bowerg green lattice intertwined with sweet peas, floating balloons, with here and there a softly shaded light. Bright eyes smiled out of happy, flushed faces into gallant, manly eyes, a little above. But I said, awhile back, that the scene was six and a half hours later, 12:30 to be exact, in our freshman's room. She is sitting smiling into the mirror, with a dreamy, far away look in her eyes, her fan, corsage and program are a limp heap in her lap. The door opens. Enter the Sophomore. Freshman: Do you know he gave me his Phi Psi pin! Oh, he's the most wonderful man! Oh, please excuse me, I honestly meant to thank you first for turning down my bed and leaving out my pajamas for me. It was darling of you. Wasn't the dance slick? Tell me, how do you like him?1' Sophomore tunhooking herb: 'tHe was marvelous, such nice eyes. Do you know, every one says it's the nicest Prom they've ever had here: it certainly beats any I've seen here. Well, you'd better go to bed now, so you look pretty and fresh for church. Freshman tgetting into bedjz Oh, yes! Isn't it nice, we're going to church? tgiggling slightlyl Wonder how he'll act in church! Sophomore tenthusiasticallyj: Well, if he acts anything like he did tonight, he'll be just slick. Goodnight, honey! No, there's nothing quite like it in all our lives. We may, in later years, attend great military balls, gorgeous coming out parties of wealthy debutantes, perhaps an Inaugural Ball or two, and dance to the strains of the Marine Band, but our Freshman Prom will always remain the very best of all.
