THE CUPOLA Martha Waldo ye From thc I1'oc'1.'j'orr1 Uollrge Alunznmf Bullrlilz: The daughter of Rockford College. who has given twenty-four years of serv- ice to her,Alma Mater, and who has now laid down her life work and love, Martha NValdo Nye, has always seemed to many of her friends to embody in a, marked degree the sweetness and light which constitutes the modern ideal of woman- hood. Tl1e blending of these qualities of her mind and heart was so har- monious that her friendships were always tempered with elcarness of vision, and her judgment was always rooted in sympathy. I believe that no one whose relationship with Miss Nye was more than casual could fail to perceive the grace of her womanhood even in the most trying busi- ness situation. Those 'of us who knew her better charm was the outward sign of that line and deep noble women. That at child should toil in a glass realized that this personal sympathy which belongs to factory, that a college girl should lose father or mother, that a Belgian home should become a waste, caused her suffering that could be hidden only by disoliplined calmness of manner. This tenderness of nature found expression not only in human affection, but also in love of the beautiful in the objective world-a sprouting bulb or an unfolding tiower. A day in the Woods was to her a source of lasting joy. Of Miss Nye's intellectual endowment, it is sutiicient to say that she was not only a life-long student of higher mathematics, but a teacher who was able to present her subject in such a way that accuracy of thinking was stimulated even in the slowest minds. It is saying among us that very seldom did a student in her classes fail. Her judgment was always sane, taking account of causes as well as evidences. It was also to her clearness of vision that We owed her sense of humor, which often cleared the atmosphere of annoyance or criticism. The sweetness and light of Miss Nye's character showed as plainly in her religious as in her social life. The last time her voice was heard in the college chapel was on a morning early in the winter. IIer choice of scripture for the service was that psalm of unfailing trust in the fatherly God which begins: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fort- ress, my God, in whom I trust. The service was closed by the singing of a part of Tennys0n's invocation to the Master in f'In Memoriamnz 'tStrong Son of God, immortal Love, Whom we, that have not seen thy face, By faith, and faith alone, embrace, Believing where we can not prove : Let knowledge grow from more tomore, But more of reverence in us dwell, That mind and soul, according well, May make one music as before. I No final utterance before the college which she loved could have better voiced the secret of Miss Nye 's intiuence. That the beauty of the Lord our God may in some measure rest upon us as it did upon her, cannot fail to be the result of her beautiful life among us. LORENA M. CHURCH. .5 V v i '. And in the beginning, were there several small Snohhish Societies called Sororities.- 2. Now be it understood that we are not knockers. These Societies do be most Useful in many Institutions of venerable size.- 2. But in Ye Rockford College, it was not seemly to have The Family divided among itself into Cliques Ellltl Bunches.- fl. Under the Old Law, were there always those that were Lett Out, and they became Sore.- 5. Pondering all these truths in her heart, Ye Venerable College created a Club, which should Amalgamate all the Animosities in Ye Academy into an Altruistie Association.- 6. This Association called she Tolo Club. 7. Then did Tolo choose from each class in Ye School, two Representatives, whose Duty it should be to Plan out ye various Parties, Sprees, and Bats whereby ye School is kept merry and contented during ye long Period of Study which does so tend to spoil our School Spirit.- S. And when Ye Verdict cometh from Ye Board as to frolic or Wliat-not, each Tolo henchman upholdeth Ye Board and says t'Even so! 'tRight O! At Current Events C'luh, along with the click of crochet needles, the bubbling of the perco- lator and the crackling ot' the tire we hear of Roc-kefeller and Mother -lanes' conversations over the Colorado strike, of the triumph of the wet party in our own legislature, of the new jitneys, of Germanys wonderful system of railroad transportation, and even keep up with the latest Mexican president. VVe wax indignant at President VVilson for his short-sighted policy in the Shipping liill and speculate upon its plunging us into war he-fore our next meeting. We follow the moves of the armies on huge variegated maps and advance with the allies through the Dardanelles. Our interest in the unwitting victims of the war, which has declined because of the high cost of the Belgians in the college connnu-nity. revives as we hear fiist-hand accounts of their suffering, until two Freshmen even want to start to Belgium armed with their Home-Nursing notes. Vlie laugh over McCuteheon's cartoon on the neutrality of the United States and agree that he has really done the thing very well. How we long to copy the innovation of the Senators' cots as a relief from the Iilibustering policy in some of our own lecture classes! VVe find out that what really happened was that those awful Germans actually sunk two American merchant vessels. Little do the followers of Treitschke and Bernhardi wreak the condemnation of their militarism. Does our political sense become so acute that we can foretell whether Italy will have declared war before our next meeting, or what our ultimatum to Eng- land will he? No, not at alll But we do aim to understand enough of the significance of the social and political questions of our day to make us useful and intelligent citizens. -L5 THE CUPOLA The Rockford College Orchestra The Rockford College Orchestra. under the direction of Mr. Edward J. P, THE CUPOLA. How We Entertain Our Sister Classes THE SLEIGHRIDE On January ninth, with a great jingling of bells and chatter of voices, some long packed-tight bobs pulled out of the court and went gliding out into the winter night. For about an hour Zllltl a half the college quiet was broken only by an occasional voice or footfall. Then nearer and nearer came singing and sleigh bells until the court was filled with the merry sound which told the left- behinds that the Senior hostesses and their Sophomore guests had returned to their hot spread on the porch. THE VABARET The Freshmen responded beautifully to the Juniors' rather trying invitation. Come and wear a fancy costume. 1 The scene on the evening of October ninth was a very cosmopolitan one. Guests from every land came to the eabarete-in spite of the war. The chief attraction of the evening was Miss M. Florence Lawson, the beautiful Indian maid, who, seated in front of her tepee, sang ln the Land of the Sky Blue VVater. JERRY The Sophomores, early in the fall, wishing, perhaps, to celebrate the new seniorhood of their sister class, invited the Seniors to a theater party at the Grand, November twelfth. HThe piquant and charming Billie Burke ' ' in 'tJerry H was the entertainment the wise Sophomores chose. THE GIRL AND THE GOVERNOR The play chosen by the Freshmen, at which to entertain the Juniors, was a comic opera given for the benefit of the Belgians by the musically interested in the city of Rockford. So on the evening of January twenty-seventh, the two classes went off in fine style in a chartered car to t'The Girl and the Governor. For several days after, many a Junior could have been heard humming t'For l'm Don Pasqual de Mosquito. 61 THE CUPOLA Cupid at Cross Purposes A niusiffal coinetly for Tolo initiation . The little vine was planted by Still Hall and encouraged to grow by an address by Ruth Burleson and an original poem by Margaret Sabin. The Juniors were given a part in the chapel service. Witli ivy-wreathed heads they marched up the aisle led by their president, who bore a salvar of autumn fruits. This she presented to the Sophomores through their president, Jane Abbott. The salvar was placed on an ivy-grown pedestal While President Gulliver gave an address on the meaning of Ivy Day. The best fam'lies, includin' the Gullivers and Faculties, was down from Middletown, west 0' here, an' most all the representative persons fr'm Barnville and Chapelane an' even Lindenburg, turned out 's well 's ever I seen. Such a fair as 'twas, too! Most too eold ter a show o' vegetables an' such, but we had all th' other attrac- tions you 'd wanta see. Pa Johnson was down fer the occasion With the hul fam'ly an' I was tol'r'ble proud to introduce 'em to the' marvels in our side shows. Con Sweller brung a. wild woman back with him from South Amerieag an' we had a fat woman frum a big circus in the next town, along with her sister, a powerful strong female. The young uns was so fascinated they 'd a. ben there yet, I reckon, ef I hadn 't a hauled 'em along. Took 'em ter see the minstrel show t' keep 'em quiet. What with the fine danein' an' them clever tricks we seen in there, I was Clean mystified myself. I held my breath tight till I hear them snortin' mares peltin' fer the finish, where ol' man Seymour tolled the bell an' kep' things mov- ing generally. Something nionientous is inipendingg in a nioinent the veil of the past will be dropped. The bell rings and into the dining rooin under the fiags eonies not a troop of niodern college girls, but a sedate company, breath- ing the epheiiieral spirit of yester year. Dainty, white-haired inatrons who doubt- less spent inany an afternoon with Martha Wasliiiigtoii over teaeups, dressed in l1oops and Dresden gowns of long ago and stately gentlemen with old-time cour- tesy seein to have stepped out of their century. It seenis as though a breath might dispell the vision. The guests are seated priinly at festive tables and delieately taste the food set before theni. Suddenly the illusion is snapped. The orchestra is playing and the friends of Martha and George Wasliiiigtoii are singing Tip- perary ! After dinner everyone adjourns to the flag covered gyinnasiuni and trans- forni it as if by niagio into an old-fashioned ballrooni. Soft strains of inusie are heard which draw forth the dainty eoquettes and handsome beaux into the nieas- ured steps of the Minuet. The sun just smiled down a11d the most dubious bird was forced to admit that spring had come. But spring was not only out of doors, but in a certain spot within our very College. The spot, the gym and Annex. Overhead a blue sky peeping through a latticed ceiling massed with vines and dotted by soft clusters of daffodils, which charm- ingly hid electric lights. Every stationary bit of apparatus masqueraded as a trellis for vines and flowers and each window held boxes overflowing with jon- quils a11d ferns. The stage for those who might be tired was delightful, wicker chairs with gay cushions, palms, softly shaded lamps and jonquils everywhere. The formerly useless vestibule into uS ill Hall was converted into a. charming nook, sparkling with punch and a-tinkle with merry windbells that were stirred by every breeze. lVicker chairs and window boxes of flowers completed the scene. The entire effect was truly one of a spring garden. One expected every 'minute that a gay robin would flutter from the vines overhead. But the dining room. This was no less alluring aglow with its soft, yellow candle light and a-sparkle with its crystal, tulle-tied baskets of bright jonquils. This, with the crooning music of the string orchestra made a scene that will never fade from our memories. As to the dance-the happy faces of the Freshman class settled this ques- tion forever. Gay little maids they were with their rustling taffetas and flying feet. Truly a dance in a garden and one we are happy to think on as our first Promenade. 73 THE CUPOLA The Peerless Peer A HOME-MADE PLAY XYITII l'iURRHXY1ZD TVN1-:S Set l'o1'tl1 lay the D1'nn1ati4- Flulm l'l:iyc1's of lhrm-kfoiwl FlTllt'Q'k'. :it the Little Sill '1'l1vatm'. Nature has agreed to let Every- maid choose her own playmates from the four seasons. First come the gentle Winds, who toss the fragrance of the summer flowers to her, and dance about her, until, wearied, they lie down to rest. Great, Strong North Wiiiil, ushering in the Autumn Leaves, frightens away the Summer Wiiitls. Everymaid frolics with the Autumn Leaves, until they, too, are quite blown away. Then arrives gay little Jack Frost, a jolly play- mate. But he seizes Everymaid and tries to kiss her. She is angered, and will no longer play with Natures tricksy children. She longs for the tall castle up on the mountains. Dark Clouds settle about her. Soon comes the Sun, Who chases the out about them. Everymaid is tempted into join- ing the chase, but she can never reach the Rain- bow. The Clouds are scattered, and Dandelions come at the beck of the Sun. Everymaid knows that it is Spring, for she hears the familiar pipe of the shepherd boy's reed up on the heights. She longs to Hy away with the Dandelions, but they are too quick for her. They disappear, and are replaced by the May Flowers, who invite her to be their Queen of the May. Everymaid loves the fair, little blossoms most of all, she becomes their Queen, and dances happily away with them. 77 w-'www THE CUPOLA 5.1!- fr.-tgq. Yesterday it became apparent to tl1e honorable Senior classlthat stringent measures 1l1llSt be taken with o11e of their menibers by way of discipline. Miss Pete Peterson was tilt' said ll1L'lllbt?l'. Duly notifying her beforehand of their intention and purpose, they descended upon her at 9 :50 promptly, expecting a courteous welcome. Did they get it? No! The door of this rebellious girl's room was locked! Nothing daunted, tl1e representatives of law Hlld order mounted a chair, pro- cured needed equipment, and began siege. Sugar, pepper, salt were adminis- tered over tlie transom and under tl1e door in large doses. Brooms, tin pans, rags, milk bottles and other well-known homeopathic remedies followed. Then, for the good of her spiritual nature, a quantity of RALLAS was prescribed: 200 copies were procured and hurled, a few at a time, into different parts of the room. Miss Peterson, within, meditated seriously on each article as it was pre- sented to her. The task was laborious, but necessary. VVanda had a little germ, lt followed her to school. It mingled with tl1e rest of ns Wliicli was against the rule. For though we speak with Tilt' tongues of Peter and Johnny, and have not K, we are becoming as sounding brass or .a tinkling cymbol. Alld though we have the gift of Fox Trot, Elllti know all tl1e mysteries of the Truth Society and the sons of the house of Beloit, and in tl1e exuberance of our strength we have power to remove drifts of snow, and have not K, we are nothing. And if we bestow all our goods' on tl1e Belgians and have 11ot K to urge us to it, we are nothing. K never faileth, whether there be Freshmen they shall Hunk, whether there be noise in the halls it shall cease, whether there be scarlet fever, it shall vanish away.
