'? Ti 1 f47fwnya,427fS By Nan Jones Mrss Molly Roby founded the Rockdale Pubhc School tn 1874 but was forced to grve tt up due to poor patronage. The followrng year Miss Maggie Hall started a prtvate school tn the upper story of a home The next year the city of Rockdale gave the school an old abandoned store house and the school was successfully launched The first princtpal was Mr W Wyatt In 1893 a two story buck burlding was erected on a hlll west of town known as College Hill There were approximately 100 students in school at that mme The whlte stucco bullding rn the southwest corner of the campus rs the lower story of that butldmg A new S7500 red brick bulldmg was constructed ln 1924 and became known as the hlgh school bulldmg The present athleuc facilitres were started in 1933 when ground was purchased for a football freld and athlettc park Soon afterwards the school The present enrollment at R.H S IS 1 000 Many new subjects sports and activities have been added with the increased enrollment Rockdale is rated one of the best schools academtcally in central Texas and wrth the football season of 54 wtll be ln Dtstrict Class AA The superintendent ts Mr W C Grtssom The school board members are Messrs L L Keen E H Noack B D Wrlltams W T Scurlock H Tyler A W Butts and W L Hall Recently a S300 000 00 ultramodern prrmary butlding was completed lt houses the first through the frfth grade The caretortum tn this building is a combtnation stage audttortum visual education room kitchen and cafetena The athletic grounds are undergorng a face ltfttng The football field is being tmproved and new bleachers added A baseball park is also betng built beyond the foot ball field The future of Rockdale calls for a new high school which w1ll be built tn the wooded area on Murry Street beyond the athleuc grounds Along wtth the new building will be the construction of a new gymnasium These w1ll be ready for use ln the near future The students of the Rockdale Schools can look forward to new excltrng developments in the years ahead f Compltments of BACKHAUS BROTHERS GROCERY LPH l f I I I was provided with 3 gymnasium.
