A scavenger hunt was part of the entertainment followed by games that were planned by the entertainment committee. A trip through the spook alley was also part of our entertainment. The lunch, furnished by the committee consisted of pop, popcorn ballq and ice cream bars. Our Christmas party was held on Wednesday, December 23, 1953 Gifts were exchanged mdChr1stmas treats were given by the teachers. Almost everyone in high school and the junior high signed as members of what proved to be a large pep club. At each meeting rep- resentatives of the teams gave pep talks. This was sup- lemented by an occasional pep talk by one of the c o a - ches. At each of the games,we had a very good attendan a Even at the games in other towns we had the pep spirit . V Sports Hlghllghts GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girls' basketbal temn definitely learned thexneaning of good sportsnan ship this year, for although we lost many of our games we have, as always, re tained the respect and good feelings of the other towns Under the capable di rection of both Mrs. Roorda and Hr Haas, we have learned much but most of all, enjoyed the sport Our record for the year has been six wins and eleven losses. At the Sectional Tournament the girls won the consolation trophy after defeating Litde Rock, it was truly a memorable night The g1rls,especially those for whom this was their last season,have worked hard and some have done their utmost to be an asset to the team BOYS' BASKETBALL The basketball season for the Rockets had many ups and downs Some of the highlights were starting out the season by defeating Inwood and Maurice, taking part in the basketball clinic in Sioux City Our next big game was with Sioux Center which we won Winning over half of our games, we entered into the Sioux county Tourna ment In the first and second round we eliminated Hawarden and Newklrk Then we lost the Semi finals and Consolation to Hull and Maurice. The chorus then was com prised of 96 members, a number later cut to 50 for the Christmas and contest chorus because this year we are entered in class D competion in music On December 18, 1953, the chorus gave a program of Christmas choral num bers. This was divided into two sectnns the first, was a setting using stained glass window, for this, the serious Christmas songs were sung. F 0 r the second section, the chorus was arranged to give the effect of s singing Christmas tree This program was concluded by having the audience join the chorus in familiar Christmas carols. On March 26,l95h, the Rock Valley chorus was host for the Smoux County Vocal Music Festival. The guest conductor was Mr George Iseminger, S.1oux City, Iowa, Each participating chorus sang two or three songs The massed chorus, which was composed of u5o members sang six selections The mixed chorus appeared again at the Annual Spring Concert which was held on May h, 19Sh The chorus was awarded a Division I rating at the State Music Contest, which was held at Alton on May 7, 195k J O E. Band The band under the directmn of Mr. Richard Johnson held it Pop Concert on November 6, 1953, which marked the first public appearance of the band for the yBaPe The marching and concert band is composed of forty-three members, five majorettea, and one drum major. The marching band marched at Morn- ingside college on November lh, l9S3,fbr the Band Day. Everyone enjoyed the football game as well as the marching. Its next appearance was on Rnuuary 19, l95h, when it presented a varied program for the annual Winter Band Con- cert. It participated in the County Band Festival at Orange City, on March5,IEL. Mr. Wm. Green of Buena Vista CdUege was the guest conductor. The band was a participant in the spring re-contest concert held on May u, 1955. It received o division I rating at the state contest held at Alton. At Sheldon the Marching Band won the third place trophy. The band marched in Orange City for the Tulip Festival on May 22, 195h, in the afternoon and evening. The freshmen and seniors were hosts to the sophomores and juniors. An outdoor treasure hunt started off an evening of fun. Comedy film strips were shown in place of the usual spook alley. They were followed by a chair relay race and apple ducking. Lunch, consisting of doughnuts, ice-cream bars, and pop, was then served. ' 35. Afterwards the P T A sawed sandwiches, cake, and nectar to high school participants. Christmas Party The high school Christmas party was held on Wednesday, December 23, at 2:30 P.
