John Ruskin identified the true purpose of education in these words: The entire objection of true education is to make peo- ple not merely do the right thing, but to love industry; not merely learned, but to love knowledge; not mere- ly pure, but to love purity; not merely just, but to hun- ger and thirst after justice. Surely Rock Valley College stu- dents and faculty have proven that these goals can motivate dedicated people, even in a divided campus home. These charter members have already established a tradition of scholarly teaching and learning, har- mony in personal relationships, and compassion and service for others. Let us mark the end of our first year by joy and thanksgiving. Rock VaUey College has a sound beginning and a very bright future. Support of the electorate has assured us a new and comfortable home where we will pursue even more effectively our in- dividual and collective educational purposes. Let us rededicate ourselves to education for creative lives of serv- ice, for vocation and avocation and, with Ruskin, for purity and justice. - ' Clifford G. Erickson President 27
