At this time prospective staff members met the faculty advisor, Phillip McGhee, and publisher of Post Publishers, Mr. William Styles. The next few weeks proved the capability of the new staff as Rock Valley published its first newspaper on Novem- ber 10, 1965. Under temporary editors and staff members. The ????, became a part of Rock Valley ' s history. Through a contest put before the student body and won by John Gile, the newspaper was named THE VALLEY FORGE. The second issue established a permanent editorial staff appointed by the faculty advisor. Those appointed were: Dennis Larson, Editor-in-chief; Richard Fitzgerald, Managing Editor; Jim Reidel, Advertising Manager Linda Dobbs, News Editor; Lynda Donaldson, Feature Editor; and Don Bryant, Sports Editor. THE VALLEY FORGE became a bi-monthly newspaper and was to be published from September to June, except during examination and vacation periods. THE VALLEY FORGE ' S thirteen issues proved to the Winnebago- Boone counties that the establishment of Rock Valley and its newspaper was truly worthwhile. THE VALLEY FORGE was established to give a better means of com- munication between the students, faculty, administration, and citizens of the two-county area. 20 Publication — Pallet) Jforge tKf)£ allep Jforgt Published by the Rock Valley College student staff for Rock Valley students, bi-monthly, September - jUne except for examination and vacation periods. Rockford, Illinois RogV ' ® s-Ubrary 25 Administration The Rock Valley College insignia syrtibolizes the college and the com munity in mutual effort promoting personal growth, industrial develop ment, and community progress. 26 John Ruskin identified the true purpose of education in these words: The entire objection of true education is to make peo- ple not merely do the right thing, but to love industry; not merely learned, but to love knowledge; not mere- ly pure, but to love purity; not merely just, but to hun- ger and thirst after justice. Surely Rock Valley College stu- dents and faculty have proven that these goals can motivate dedicated people, even in a divided campus home. These charter members have already established a tradition of scholarly teaching and learning, har- mony in personal relationships, and compassion and service for others. Let us mark the end of our first year by joy and thanksgiving. Rock VaUey College has a sound beginning and a very bright future. Support of the electorate has assured us a new and comfortable home where we will pursue even more effectively our in- dividual and collective educational purposes. Let us rededicate ourselves to education for creative lives of serv- ice, for vocation and avocation and, with Ruskin, for purity and justice. - ' Clifford G. Erickson President 27 Dean of Instruction As Dean of Instruction, Mr. Etheredge is supervis- or of all the curricula offered at Rock Valley and handles the hiring of the Faculty members. The ex- cellent curricula and dedicated faculty that can be found at Rock Valley are a tribute to the capabilities of Dean Etheredge. Dean Etheredge received his B.S. degree in geo- logy at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and his M.S. degree at the University of Illinois. He has com- pleted all required courses for his Ph.D. degree in geology at Northwestern University and is now a can- didate for a doctorate at Loyola University. MR. FORREST D. ETHEREDGE DR. RONALD W. HALLSTROM Dean of Vocational- Technical Education Serving first as Business Manager and Chairman of the Business Division, Dr. Hallstrom was then pro- moted to Dean of Vocational-Technical Education. As the title indicates, his job is to coordinate spe- cial two-year programs leading to employment or ad- vancement for those already employed. Nursing, data processing, secretarial, and retail marketing are only a few of many such programs. Dr. Hallstrom received his B.S. , M.S., and Ed. D. degrees at Northern Illinois University. 28 Dean of Students One of the greatest assets to the students and to RVC as a whole is our Dean of Students, Dr. J. B. Munson. Holding one of the more trying jobs at the college, Dr. Munson handles it well with his excel- lent and varied background in education and student personnel services. Some of his duties include counseling and guid- ing students, advising the Student Commission and student organizations, directing orientation, pro- grams, directing probation and dismissal committees, and overseeing social events at the student center. Dr. Munson, highly respected by both faculty and students, obtained his B.A. at Morningside Col- lege, and his M.A, and Ph.D. at Michigan State University . DR. J. B. MUNSON MISS ELIZABETH M. SECOND ROW: Coach Rease Dinger, Dave Martin, Paul Cicero, Lance Elfstrom, Larry Franzen. BACK ROW: Don Rosene, Tom Gibbons, and Tom Marinelli. The Rock Valley Trojan ' s first basketball squad did not compete on the intercollegiate level this season, but in- stead participated in the Rockford Park District Men ' s Basketball League. The Trojans faced many experienced play- ers, some of whom were former college stars or former Rockford area high school stars. At the end of the season our team could look back to thrillers, upsets, and a very honorable 9 and 9 record. Mr. Rease Binger, a former coach of the Rockford school system, was hired by our athletic advisor, Mr. J. Har- old Swanson to coach our first basketball squad. It was hoped that this team would lay the groundwork for future bas- ketball teams at Rock Valley. At the same time, Mr. Swanson applied for and received acceptance to the Northern Illinois Junior College Conference. Plans for a large and versatile field house were completed early this spring. With all this happening during our first year, the future of athletics at Rock Valley seems very bright and promising. 72 Go You Trojans! 74 We They 35 Washington Park 26 35 North Park Merchants 56 47 O ' Donnell ' s 39 38 Sports Center 47 63 Sunset Tap 40 57 Booker Washington 42 39 Hornets 31 40 N-N ' s 48 68 Rockford School of Business 34 45 North Park Merchants 53 52 First Federal 58 44 Bell Savings 61 41 Booker Washington 54 53 Five Points 46 49 Genoa Merchants 55 51 N-N ' s 44 50 Pee Wee ' s 57 «Jl , Sports Center 67 Student Commission Terry Vesely, President Chuck Sparacino, Vice-president Linda Dobbs, Secretary Kathy Pickering Treasurer The first Student Commission of Rock Valley was appointed by Dr. J. B. Munson, Dean of Students. He selected the members on the basis of recommendations made by their respective high school counselors; per- sonal contact with them during registration; and recommendations from previously selected members. In this way he was attempting to have each high school in the Winnebago-Boone County area and other groups (such as students who have been out of high school a few years and those who have attended other colleges) represented on the Commission. It was essential to organize a Student Commission on a temporary basis as soon as possible to develop a constitution for a student association for Rock Valley College and to provide elections for a permanent representative commission form of government for the students. These two purposes and many others were handled expertly by the temporary commission. With this background, the student body of Rock Valley College can look forward to a good student government in future years.
