The loss of Don Pettigrew, Ed Kruljac, Nick Pritza, Eddie Zueck, and Pete Mirich was keenly felt. These would-be seniors are now serving in the armed forces of our country. Jim Lawson, Keiji Okano, and Ted Peterson were the only three lettermen to return this season. Minor injuries The Tigers played their outstanding game against Cheyenne, only to have a victory slip through their grasp when the Indians caught a long pass and carried the ball over the goal line. This was the only touchdown made throughout the game. Coach Engstrom and Assistant Coach Melchar were untiring in their efforts to build a good team and to promote good sportsmanship and clean playing. This year nineteen boys received school sweaters. Most of these were absolutely new recruits. The team was the light¬ est major squad in the state. They also carried the least weight of any grid team that had ever defended the Tiger goal line. Although the Tigers’ record for the season was two games won, one game tied, and five games lost, we still feel a proud loyalty for our 1943 grid team. 32 BASKETBALL The Tigers began the basketball season with a major setback—the loss of Ted Peterson and Norman Buchan. With these two veteran players went much of the height and experi¬ ence necessary for a championship team. This le ft only one lettcrman, Bob Sprowell, to lead the inexperienced hoopmen through the rough and tumble season. The team broke almost even with ten wins and fourteen losses. Many of these fourteen games were lost by one or two points. A twenty-four game schedule is a difficult and crowded one, the average schedule having only eighteen games. However, all members of the squad kept training and came to practice faithfully, which kept them in good condition for every In the annual district tournament the Tigers were off to a good start when they defeated the Reliance Pirates 37-13. However, their second game was definitely the hard luck game of the season, when a fast-moving Superior quintet spilled the Tigers with a 35-23 score. In order to play Green River in the finals, they beat Evanston 55-25, only to lose to the Wolves in a hard-fought game which ended 25-24, another one-point defeat. Their two victories earned the fourth place cup. Bob Sprowell’s keen floor play and long shots placed him on the All- District Team. This was the first year in the last thirteen in which the Tigers weren’t play¬ ing in the championship game. Rock Springs has taken the first place trophy for all but three of these years, in which cases they finished in runner-up position.
