DELTA EPSILON ALPHA The Delta Epsilon Alpha is a. national high school honorary society for i public speaking. To be eligible one must have served his school in one or more of the following ways: as a member of the debate team, an orator, a. reader, or have taken the part of a major character in a, three or four act play. Two minor parts are also acceptable. The student must also have grades of. average or above. The purpose of this organization is to create greater interest and activity in public speaking. This year, 1930, Rock Springs High School established the first chapter of D. E. A. in Wyoming. This was done by Mr. Elliot, sponsor. Our D. E. A. has fourteen members, counting the sponsor. The officers are: Virginia Nelson, Presi- dent; Edward Perko, Vice-President, and Lavina Postal, Secretary and Treasurer. The D. E. A. dinner dance at Howards was one of the ouustanding social functions of the year. SENIOR ALUMNI DANCE One of the most delightful social events of the year was the Senior-Alumni Dance, held in the Masonic Temple Friday, January 3rd. The hall was beautifully decorated in the high school colors-orange and black. Diagonal streamers from each corner of the hall met under a large light in the center of the ceiling. From each light hoops covered with orange and black streamers were suspended, producing a misty effect. The orchestra stand and punch table were also arrayed in these colors. Dainty orange and black novelty drapes were hung at the many windows. A large, illuminated reproduction of the school seal was placed directly above the orchestra. stand. Music for the event was tur- nished by Herb Simpson's orchestra. There was a large attendance with many of the alumni present. Committee for the affair was as follows: Seniors-Miss Virginia Nelson, Miss Marian Chambers, Mr. Kenneth Buckley. Alumni-Miss Josephine Hay, Miss Beatrice Jack, Mr. George stnrhoun. $5

The Board of Control of. 30 did some splendid work in publishing a handbook of information for the use of students just entering Rock Springs High School. The Board held a banquet in the Home Economics room in November. The decorations carried out the armistice idea and the program coincided. Edward Perko gave a. war reading and Mr. Thompson said a few words about. the conditions when the Armistice was signed. Mr. Winchell stimulated feeling and agitation for a new high school. Another banquet was held May 13 at Howards. The decorations produced a. summery atmosphere. The program was as follows: A Mental Test; A gouge ttWe Have a. Complex ; Musical History by Freshmen; Violin Quartette-dOIga. Sarcletti, Harold Alenius, Arvo Maki and Steward Blunk, accompanied by Edith Likes; Survey by Elsie Aho; Outlook by Mr. Winchell; Farewell and Welcome ad- dress by Mildred Hansen; and the school song. NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA The National High School Orchestra met in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the week of March 23-27. the same time the Superintendent's Association met. It is made up of 315 High School Students from all over the United States, v The Orchestra held concerts, the final of which was broadcast over the National Broadcasting Station. These concerts and practices were all held in the largest auditorium in the World. Walter Damrosch, famous director, was guest conductor for a selection of the final concert. Joseph Maddy is the director of the Orchestra. Arvo Maki, a member of the class of 30 , represented the Rock Springs High School in the first section of the String Orchestra at this famous affair. Arvo has shown ability to become a. great violinist in the future and we all hope he has success in this field of work. 14
