Purple and Gold CLASS HISTORY In the year of ouri Lord, one thousand nine hundred and eighteen, the Class 01 t30 made their debut into their school career in the lowly first grade. We can recall, in the first grade when we were taught our A B C's. Whenever we- did an act or merit, a star was placed beside our name which was written on the board. tWe Seniors always did many things of merit so we had many stars after our namesJ First, in the history of our schooling we had to learn how to write our names. This was sunple. All we had to do was punch holes With a needle around the outline of our names and then we knew how. Second, we had to learn how to read. The first books we received were just simple books, containing such expressions as, Mamma see kitty, kitty see mamma, and so on until we were good readers and writers. Every year added a little more to our knowledge; simple arithmetic, Penmanship, History, Geography and Hygiene, and all other fundamentals, endinv 1 Latin or Spanish and U. S. History. Following these came the Co: also. We graduated from the grade school and entered the J11 ; Junior High School. This is perhaps the beginning of our most On entering the Senior High School, we were grown up -:' some of the higher classmen. We were looked down upon as a! 'At this time came our memories of the grade school experience. could see someone sitting in the corner with a dunce cap on his the corner his face toward the wall, and someone out in the hall. - ' Now you must remember that the Seniors did things of merit not only in . the first grade but also in the High Schools. In the Junior High they had officers to watch that no one would go up the wrong side of the steps, and that no one would go rushing as if in a hurry. We felt that we needed a new school and no sooner were thoughts told and the new school building was built. Did you ever notice the new trophy case up on the upper floor of this building? It was suggested by the Seniors. The idea for paved streets was also suggested by us. There are a great many others which cannot be told now. We do hope that the class of t31 has as much success in school life as we have had. Edward Perko gave a. war reading and Mr. Thompson said a few words about. the conditions when the Armistice was signed. Mr. Winchell stimulated feeling and agitation for a new high school. They carried orange pennants with black tigers in the corners. , The yell leaders were Vivian Moon and Blanche Coffey. Miss Templeton was sponsor. SENIOR PARTY The first Social affair of the season was the Senior party held in the gym on October 26. . The decorations were carried out on the Halloieen plan: Doughnuts and apple cider were refreshments, and in a dark corner one could see dark forms learning their fate from an old gypsy. . . . The Rawlins boys also attended the party and helped the crowd have a jolly time. PRESS CONVENTION The Sagebrusher was represented in the Annual Press Comrention at Lara- mie by Marie McLaughlin and Ruth Redshaw, editor in chief and business manager, respectively. Each new day brought a new slogan which was used through the Whole day as the salutation between Rock Springs High School occupants. Some of the slogans were: Knowledge is Power, Win by Fair Play, Your School and Mine, and We Need a New High School. Everyone entered whole-heartedly into the spirit of this week and each did his very best to make it a success. On Friday of All High School Week an Assembly program was presented Which portrayed the ideals of our creed in clever acts and stuntseln this manner our high ideals were even more deeply impressed upon us than had they ever been. Souvenirs of each day will help students to remember this all important week. The Class of 230 Wishes all future classes over-flowiug success in their All High School Weeks. CHEMICAL ESSAYS Among the various activities at the school, essay writing plays an impor- tant as well as an interesting part. Each year these manuscripts gain prizes and fame for Rock Springs High School. Of all the essays written in school probably the chemical essays under the auspices of the American Chemical Society are the most outstanding. Any high school student is eligible for entrance in this contest. The par- ticipant has his choice of six subjects which deal with Chemistry in relation to: Health and Disease, Home, Agriculture or Forestry, the Development of an Industry or a. Resource of the United States, and the Enrichment of Life. The essays are sent to Cheyenne to the Commissioner of Education who superintends the judging. The winners of first places in the six above named fields each receive twenty dollars in gold. The winners of second places receive a certificate of award and a. set of books on Science. The essays Winning first in the various states are then sent to the Ameri- can Chemical Society, where the six national winners are chosen. These six winners receive a reward of a four years course in practically any accepted college in the United States. Tuition is paid and the Winners are given five hundred dollars annually. Rock Springs has been very fortunate in these contests and as a. result great interest has been stimulated toward writing them. This year Rock Springs High received three first prizes and one second. Those receiving first were: Marie McLaughlin, The Relation of Chemistry to Agriculture ; Vivian Moon; ttThe Re- lation of Chemistry to the Development of the Coal Industry in the United States ; John Willson, uThe Relation of Chemistry to National Defense. Elijah Daniels received second on the topic, The Relation of Chemistry to the Homef It will be remembered that only last year Morgan Walters received a national prize on the subject The Relation of Chemistry to the Home. Marie McLaughlin and John Willson received first prizes in the state last year also. Miss McCall deserves unbounded credit for her endless labor spent in helping students to produce sensible essays. Through Miss McCallis endless efforts Rock Springs ranks among the highest in the state of Wyoming in Scientific lines. GORGAS ESSAY For the last two years the Gorgas Memorial Institute has sponsored an es- say writing contest. Each year the subject though somewhat changed, deals directly with the life and work of William Crawford Gorgas and of the Gorgas Memorial Institute. Marie McLaughlin has won the high school prize and the state prize for the two years in Which Rock Springs High School has taken part in the contest. 29 SENIOR PICNIC One of the big events of Senior Week is the Senior Picnic.
