ee So ee The Senior Class of ‘1964 Rock Prin Gs v Ligh School Den VET, North Carolina Ll2 72) “Our Year Jrresents ... Volume XVI THE ROSPHIAN wv; OLE word With sincere joy, the members of the graduating class of 1964 present to you the sixteenth edition of The Rosphian. We have tried to include as many pictures as possible to help the mind's eye retain the me- mories of OUR YEAR. OUR YEAR is filled with moments of laughter, excitement, friendship, and study. OUR YEAR is the year of great tragedy--the assassination of our nation's president, John F. Kennedy, May each of us study andinform ourselves that we may not only exist, but help to keep the eternal flame of seeking righteousness and peace alive. We found a combination of all the fine qualities that make aperson outstanding as a teacher and friend of the students. At Rock Springs, she did much to instill in all who sat in her classes those traits which will be most desirable as a student and, later, in adult life. As an English teacher, characters in literature became living souls. A greater insight was gained to the fact that 'Good English should be spoken and written. Her understanding, patience, and wisdom were her greatest assets as sponsor of the Rock Springs High School Student Council. Her ideals of character were always portrayed in the plays which she selected for presentation by the senior class. Mrs. Baker, we the senior class of 1964, want to thank you for all the guidance and help you have given us the past four years. We shall always remember you with fondness and wish you much happiness in the future. We sincerely dedicate THE ROSPHIAN of 1964to our former high school teacher, Mrs. Martha H. Baker. MRS. MARTHA H. BAKER ; October 16, 1963 Dear Seniors, Please accept my deep appreciation for the many surprises and kindnesses of my last day at school. The delicious food at the parties, the beautiful gift, the well-chosen card. The rose, the precious letter and signatures, and your thoughfulness in planning all of this--everything simply emphasized what you have meant to me through the years. I pray that strength and wisdom will be given you, all your teachers, and your senior sponsor as you face the strenuous, busy days and months ahead. Sincerely, Martha Baker SCIENCE Science is very important in our world to- day. Courses offered in our high school are general science, biology, chemistry and phy- sics. General science is an introductory course in the field of science. In biology class, the students like to disect worms and frogs. Here, the chemistry class is seen making hydrogen. ENGLISH Students are given an opportunity to make a thorough study of grammar for personal and professional use. Shakespeare, Sandburg, Frost, Wilder, and Chaucer are some favorite authors of out- standing literature which they learnto apprec- iate. Anadvanced course in English, which con- sists mainly of creative writing, is offered this year to college preparatory students. In the picture, Mrs. White is shown help- ing Jeanne Walkup with a composition. SPANISH More and more students see the need of taking a foreign language as the world becomes smaller each year. SpanishI and II are offered to insure oral as well as written comprehension of the lan- guage. In the picture we see Miss Brawley help- ing Phyllis Trexler conjugate a Spanish verb. MATH The mathematics curriculum fits the needs of any high school student. General mathematics, algebra, and geom- etry aid students who are interested in attend- ing college. Seeninthe picture is Mr. Sparrow observ- ing Phil, Jack, and Dwight as they struggle with a geometry problem. HOME ECONOMICS Girls take home economics that they may be better prepared for their future as wives and mothers. They learn to sew, cook, and serve meals. Also they study family health, household economics, and decorating. Inthe picture, Mrs. Whisnant's home eco- nomics girls arethrilledover their first work as seamstresses. COMMERCIAL Typewriting, office practice, bookkeeping, and shorthand--add up to good future office employees. Many students take commercial subjects for personal as well as vocational use. Mrs. Sigmon's typewriting pupils are ea- ger to begin typing each day. SOCIAL STUDIES Since our country's history is of great im- portance to us, all juniors are required to study United States history. World history is offered that students may learnof old empires, religions, and countries of today. Civics, so- ciology, and economics, also, are taught this year. Mr. Carter is shown using an up-to-date map whichaids him as a United States history teacher in his presentation, and assists the students in their understanding. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE The program of vocational agriculture at Rock Springs High School includes the follow- ing activities: Classroom work, field trips, farm-mechanics instruction and shop work, supervised farming programs, Future Farm- ers of America activities, exploring job op- portunities, and requirements and types of jobs in the world of work . ZS: 7S UL SS ie Kee) INN HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Health and physical education is a course required of all freshman class pupils. This is a desirable and much needed subject, as a strong body is a person's greatest wealth. Pat Johnsonis shown leading the class in their calisthenics. - MUSIC The new music room was designed last year for almost perfect accoustical effects. Band and chorus are offered to grades seven throughtwelve. They haveaclass period each day for practice. The chorus presents programs for chapel and civic clubs. The Christmas concert is an event to which students, parents, and teachers look forward. GUIDANCE The guidance counselors advise students on matters of courses, vocations, scholarships, tests, and colleges. Mr. Carter and Mr. Heavner are our guidance counselors. LIBRARY SCIENCE A studious atmosphere is found in the li- braries. The librarian, Mrs. Coleman, and assistants see that the proper book or other information is easily accessible to the stu- dents. DRIVER EDUCATION Students at Rock Springs look forward to the day that they are old enough to enroll in driver education class. Above, Mr. Carter is shown with some of his students. We wish tothank the student body who sacrificedtheir time from classes and waited patiently in the process of having their pictures made. To Mrs. Dwight Callaway, Sr., for the occupancy of her home when making the superlative and feature pictures, we express gratitude. We appreciate Mr. Lloyd Mahaffey, our patient and kind photographer, and Delmar Printing Company. To our advertisers, we wish to express our gratitude. Without you, we likely would not be able to publish this annual. This year, we have sold a record number of copies of The Rosphian. Without you, we would have no annual. Many seniors have worked continuously on the annual for the past three or more months. They have sacrificed their time to solicit advertisements and compile this edition. This group has worked as a team. Though obsecure to most students, it was a happy, busy group. Thanks to all who helped to make our goal, 'OUR YEAR , Volume 16, THE ROSPHIAN, a reality.
