Mr. Shineman has devoted twelve years of his life to the Rock Port R-II School system. He received his B.S. in business and teaching certificates in social studies and physical education from Tarkio College in 1962. In 1970 he earned a Master's Degree in administration from Northwest Missouri State University. He was awarded a Specialist's Degree in administration from the University of Missouri at Columbia in August of 1977. After graduating from Tarkio College, Mr. Shineman taught in the Westboro schools from 1962 to 1965. He taught social studies and P.E. and was also head coach of all junior high and high school sports. His teaching career in Rock Port be- gan in 1965. For two years he was PE instructor and head coach of boys, football, track and girls' basketball. During the 1967-68 school year he was elementary principal as well as head football coach. In 1968 he was promoted to junior- senior high school principal and has held that position since then. Mr. Shineman and his wife Juanita have three childreng Steve Patty, and Julie, fall graduates of Rock Port High Schoolj and one granddaughter, Jill. Mr. Shineman is leaving RPHS to take over as superintendent of Stanbury R-II schools. He commented that, The thing I've probably enjoyed most has been the cooperation ofthe kids at Rock Port, not only as students, but as friends. J' Gabe Shineman has given twelve years of hard work and service to our school. Many improvements have been made during the time he has served as principal. For this, we are deeply grateful. We want to wish him the best of luck in the future. He will be greatly missed by the students who workec with him and will always hold a place in their hearts. Ad ministrotion Fearless Leaders The Rock Port R-2 School System was well run with a fine team of administrators. They each had a full load of work, but they were never too busy to help students with any in- dividual problems they might have had. Expo nding Knowledge The language arts, speech, and composition were taught by Mrs. Barbara Marquart and Ms. Dixie Glascock. Comp. I, II, and III, plus Language Arts I and Literature II were all instructed by Mrs. Marquart. Here composition classes con- centrated on correct sentence structure, vocabulary, out- lines, and writing good paragraphs and essays. Language Arts I was a class for the freshmen. They studied the basic parts of speech, spelling, punctuation, and sentence struc- ture. Literature II concentrated on short stories. Ms. Glascock taught Speech I, Lit I, III, and IV, drama, and Language Arts I. The speech students learned how to pre- pare short speeches as well as developing their ability to communicate clearly with other people. Lit I was a study of the fundamentals of literature. The Lit III and IV classes studied novels, plays, and poems. Drama students learned about the history of the theatre as well as modern theatri- cal practices. At right: Mrs. Marquart has a good day. Another day in Consumer Education. aku fa , ,..o Mrs. Tarp explains instruction sheet. Mrs. Jo Tarp's Home Economics classes had a full year. The Home Ec. I classes sewed, cooked, worked on personal de- velopment and money management, and constructed child- ren's books. Home Ec. II was an extension of Home Ec. I. These students increased their knowledge of household ap- pliances and planned a kitchen. Child Development class was basically the study of children from before birth to age six. Consumer Ed. planned budgets, how to spend and borrow money, and how to use a lawyer. Marriage and Family Living studied dating, marriage, children, and divorce. Advanced Clothing designed and made their own outfit. An in depth study of foreign, meatless, and guest foods was included in Advanced Foods. These students also worked on nutrition and disease. The classes offered were Alge- bra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Trignometry, and Phys- ics. These students had homework assignments almost daily and quizes and tests periodically. Science Registers Mixed Reactions The science classes offered this year were physical science, biology, chemistry, and advanced biology. Physical science studied various properties of the earth and did some work with the metric system. The biology students studied the bod ily functions and the organs of worms, frogs, starfish, clams, and fetal pigs. Chemistry extended the knowledge of the things they learned in physical science and did a lot of work with acids, bases, and salts. Advanced biology was the study of the human body. Crossing Borders French and Spanish were offered as Foreign Language class- es this year. The students studied and practiced the basic pronunciation patterns. Understanding the spoken words, reading, Writing, and speaking were also introduced. The study of culture was also an important part of the class- room study. Cultural projects included tlie study of foreign holidays, singing songs in foreign languages, craft projects Cpaper mache and pinatasj discussion of famous personali- ties, and learning proverbs and customs. He was responsible for Elementary Band, Junior High Band, High School Band, and Music Appreciation. Mrs. Lynn Hunter instructed the Junior High and High School Choruses as well as the Swing Choir. The Junior High and High School art classes were taught by Miss Amy Freeman. The main project for these students this year was redecorat- ing the art room. Above: Amy's story time. Students learned about the United States as well as world history. Mr. Finke also taught Decisions and Civics. These classes were de signed to help students organize their lives after high school. Mr. Mark Dulgarian taught Sociology, Psychology, Geog- raphy, and American Government. These classes took Field trips along with their regular classroom work. At right: Mr. Mark Dulgarian. They studied employment aspects such as job applications, job interviews, resignations, employ- er-employee relations, promotions. They had films almost weekly on job availability. The students were required to work at least ten hours a week. Two hours during the school day were allowed, but most students also worked after school and on weekends. Mr. Raymond Eickhoff fpictured center rightj, instructed junior high and high school students in drafting, woodworking, and general shop. His students made projects from leather, various types of wood, and metals. Mr. John McClaron Cpictured lower nghtj, helped the carpentry class construct a house. This is the fifth year this project has been undertaken. The boys worked hard for three hours every day of the school year and completed a fine home. Lee puts finishing touches on ceiling. I 55 i ' M Below: Squeak and Rick at work. Mr. John Pearce's Ag and shop classes had a busy year. Ag I studied the history and purposes of FFA, welding, wood- working, and animal sciences. Ag II worked on identification and judging of Field crops and weed seeds, meat judging, welding and wood projects, learning how to use power equip- ment, and soil characteristics. Ag III was basically a class on Farm management. The students studied livestock crops, chemicals, and Fertilizers, and planned a farm. Mr. Pearce's semester Ag classes were Small Gas Engines and Shop Con- struction. The Ag teams participating in district contest and their rat- ings were: Field Crops, Ig Soils, Ig Poultry, I: Meats, Ig Hor- ticulture, Ig Livestock, I. Mrs. Runkles, Business Instructor A Special Type of Business Bookkeeping I and II and basic business were taught by Mrs. Diana White. In the bookkeeping classes, students learned how to keep accurate records for merchandising and service businesses. The advanced class studied partnerships and cor- porations. The basic business class studied such useful things as the free enterprise system, communication, advertising, banking, buying a car, and job applications. Mrs. Kathy Runkles taught students shorthand, clerical of- fice practice and typing. The girls enrolled in shorthand learned the basics and spent the rest of the year developing their speed. COP concentrated on learning how to operate various office machines, improving typing skills, learning to file, and working in an office simulation situation. Typing students were kept busy learning basic fundamentals and using these skills to type up various kinds of jobs. Typing I works on Jobs. X. , G Below: Kevin and Mark play badminton. Below: Ms. Hodges demonstrates serve. Fun and Fitness The girls' P.E. classes were held first semester. They were in- structed by Ms. Cheri Hodges. The girls did various activities such as playing volleyball and speedball, bowling, and work- ing on gymnastic equipment. The boys' physical education classes were taught by Mr. Mike Rader Cat leftj during the second semester. The boys played dodgeball, badminton, and basketball. Driver Education was instructed by Mr. Duane Smith. The students learned the basic driving skills as well as how to care for automobiles. Mr. Smith and Mr. Mark Dulgarian also taught the health classes. Margee practices on parallel bars. This was an individualized program designed to help students improve all basic reading skills, with an emphasis on vocabu- lary and comprehension, and to encourage reading for pleas- ure. Mrs. Carol Harmon instructed the ungraded students. They studied the basic math, science, reading, language, and history subjects, as well as working on special projects throughout the year. New Helping Out Mrs. Burke looks up prices on new books. Once again the students of Rock Port High School were bles- sed with a fine staff of specially trained personnel. Ms. Janet Conboy ftop leftj served as junior high and high school gui- dance counselor. She assisted students in scheduling classes, working out personal and school-related problems, and plan- ning their careers. Mrs. Betty Burke was the Librarian for elementary and high school. She was kept busy ordering new books and sending out over-due book notices. Taking care of all the students many ailments was Mrs. Beverly Stewart, R.N. She also kept records on the weight, height, sight, and hearing of all the students. e lndispensclbles The staff of cooks provided hot meals for students five days a week. Beside this they also did painting jobs, yard work, and repaired broken windows. The school bus drivers transported students to and from school daily. In their first ex- perience in formal education, the Kindergarten students learn phonics, math, reading readiness, science and social studies. Many activities such as films, records, reading centers, arts, crafts, music and physical education are of- fered to the children by their teachers Mrs. Suzanne Fentiman and Mrs. Charlene Steele. Patrick Bennington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Benning- ton, was killed in a boating accident on October 3, 1976. Patrick was born on August 31, 1971 and lived all of his life in Rock Port. Zuck Mrs. Fentiman First Marching Cn First Graders work very hard at learning to sound out vowels and consonants. Then they apply this knowledge in pronunciation of new words. Learning to read is one of the biggest events of the year. Some of the special units the children cover are: fire pre- vention, zoo animals, Christmas customs, telephone usage, good citzenship, and children in Africa. First graders make many booklets concerning units being studied and use games, stories, and work papers to help make learning more fun. They Wrote creative stories and rhymes and were introduced to cursive writing. Science classes were quite exciting with many experiments being performed with batteries, air, and magnets. The special social studies unit was Families of Long Ago. The teach- ers, Mrs. Jane Nigh and Mrs. Dorothy Peck were kept busy frying flannel cakes which the children enjoyed eating with butter they had churned themselves. Throughout the athletic seasons they provided refreshments at the Junior Stand. They planned, organized, and put together the Junior- Senior Prom and Banquet. Members ofthe junior class spent the week before decorat- ing the Memorial Building for the dance. The theme was 'Tropical Paradise? The banquet was held at the Coach House. FTA Sta rts Cut This was the first year Rock Port High School had a chapter of Future Teachers of America. The purpose of the club was to give students an idea of the responsibilities and duties involved in a teaching career. Members assisted elementary and junior high teachers in their classroom work to get some experience. FTA also had a bake sale to raise some money. The Rock Port Chapter of the Future Farmers of America had a very active year. They sold 1,174 boxes of fruit in their annual fund-raising project. Any girl who lettered once in any sport was eligible to join. They spon- sored a very successful Anything Goes to raise some mon- ey. The boys' and girls' track teams competed against the faculty. The students won 68 M-54 116. They held an initi- ation for six new members late in the school year and had a pizza party afterwards. Vocal Supporters Pep Clubis main responsibility is boosting spirit within the athletic teams and the entire school. Our Pep Club did an outstandingjob of this. Whether the teams were winning or losing the girls yelled their hardest. They attended every varsity football and basketball game. Sometimes the girls were a little worse for the wear the following day, but it didn't matter. They enjoyed supporting their teams. Q Book Guardians The hard working group of librarians performed various duties in the high school library, such as checking out and shelving books, dusting shelves, filing periodicals, and helping students with the facilities in the Learning Resource Center. They also provided interesting bulletin boards for both the elementary and high school libraries. The girlis main activity this year was sponsoring a Sadie Hawkins Dance. The Lib- rarians had a new duty this year, because over-due fees were charged to the students for not returning their books on time. A Teom With Desire The Rock Port Jays had a disappointing season with a record of 2-8. The boys faced a lot of very tough competition in the 275 Conference this year. The team underwent many changes with the addition of the new head coach, Mike Rader. Assis- tant coaches this year were Wayne Moore and Gene Finke. The eight seniors receiving letters were: Rick Hendrickson, Jeff Houts, Bob Kennell, Lee Lingerfelt, Dan McMahon, David Stanford, Andy Stoner, and Jerry Sutter. They placed third at the Indian Relays, third at the Rocket Relays, second at the 275 Conference meet, and third at the District meet. The girls trained for many long hours to achieve these honors. The team was coached by Mr. Raymond Eick- hoff. Marlene Walter and Shawna Heits qualified for the state track meet. Marlenels events were the hurdles and the 440 yard run. The Big Event The class of '77 spent several hours preparing for Senior Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. Senior Class Day was held on May 25. After this, the seniors werenat re- quired to return to classes. Baccalaureate was May 22. Rev. Gene Swofford gave the sermon. Commencement-the final event-was held on May 26 in the gym. Dick Buckridge, Assistant to the President at NWMSU was the speaker. Diplomas were presented by the President of the School Board, Mr. Jess Omohundro. For many seniors, this was the last visit to R.P.H.S. Many memories were made during their school days that will never be forgotten. At right: So lost!
