Backbone of Our School System The Board of Education for Rock Port R-ll consists of six members who are elected by the residents of the Rock Port School District. These six people are the backbone of our school's system. They are responsible to the people for all matters pertaining to our school. They are conscientious, deeply dedicated citizens who serve without pay and are interested in the quality of our education. They learned how to measure using the met- ric system and found out their own height in meters. At the beginning of the year they made their own rules for the class and the consequences if they didn't obey them. They had a crayiish and chameleon for study in their animal unit. Everybody also enjoyed having a Spanish lesson once a week. Above left: Mrs. Nigh lends a helping hand. Second graders working hard? - if if 4 K 1 A-er M - a. P 1....f 1 1 .L sq z . The students, under Miss Peggy Meyers and Mrs. Doris Kirby, studied the different kinds of communities, as- tronomy and the solar system, different foods and diets, the many environments and the climates within them. As an outside activity, they corresponded with a third grade class in California and exchanged many ideas with them. 38 fi Mrs. Kirby instructs the class 3 r iir, r ri 9 A ' zifbw: - ' . ,V , ffhf We r ., . , . Jay Golfers Swing Through Another Season The Rock Port golf team enjoyed a fairly successful season this spring, as the boys and girls teams both had more meets. They sometimes played in competition three and four times a week. This was the last year for girls golf in the spring as they will move it to the fall in the future. Both boys and girls were coached by Mr. Steve Herndon. Jim Blank putts on the practice green. Jays Keep Trying The varsity Jays had a disappointing season, ending the season with a 7 and 12 record. Several of the losses came when some ofthe key players were sick with the ilu early in the year. The Jays did post an impressive win over the Tabor Knights at home for the homecoming. The Iays will be looking forward to next season with a good bunch of young players to go along with the returning veterans, Var- sity Iays are pictured below, left to right: Manager Brian Perry, Coach Runkles, Coach Whitford, Doug Walters, Reed Martin, Mike Burke, Steve Burkhart, Jay Erdman, Barry Minter, Kym Haynes, Craig Corken, Doug Thomp- son, Gerry Markham, Kent Wanamaker. Led by Coach Tony Gaines, the 12 varsity girls showed all their enthusiasm and spirit. The B- team, preparing themselves for varsity ball, worked hard and improved from game to game. Seniors leav- ing the squad were: Maralee Sweeton and Michele Heits. The B-team and Varsity were helped by their student managers, Susan Lauritsen and Rhonda Elliott. Activities Q 1 -,uf O Thoughts of football homecoming began early in the year as the student council met to plan the annual event. Out of the committee's suggestions, the theme R.P. Graffiti was chosen. Along with the week of float building, the '5O's day helped to set the mood of the era. The faculty and students joined in a day of slicking back the hair and rolling down the bobby socks , The student coun- cil held bubble gum blowing and costume contests. Some of the prizes awarded in the latter were best dressed of each class, man about the campus , teeny bopper and fonzie awards. Royalty Rook Homecoming day was rainy, windy and chilly, but the parade went on as sched- uled. That night the weather was clear for the game. At halftime the class floats were paraded around the football field. At the final buzzer the score was Rock Port 35 and Fairfax 0. Then it was on to the dance. Homecoming was a rockin' and rollin' success. Dan is taken by surprise. King candidates were Willie, Reed and Dan. Pictured below are members of the football homecoming royalty. The 1974-75 football homecoming theme was R, P. Graf- fiti. Four high school and two jr. high classes constructed a float to represent their class, that went along with the theme. With their creative minds, hundreds of napkins, bundles of chicken wire, lots of cardboard and enough lumber to make a forest, they came up with six inter- esting floats. The floats were judged on originality, beauty, and on how well they kept with the theme. Pictured left: Freshmen-- Clap for the Blue lays. Fl.P. Jays Boogie At a Victorious Homecoming Basketball homecoming was held on Saturday, January 25th with games against Fremont-Mills A and B boys. Both our A and B boys teams came out on top with scores respect- ively 77 to 44 and 54 to 21. Pep Club who was in charge of the homecoming dance, de cided to do something different this year. They decided to get a disc-jockey. They came up with Jim Moore from WHB radio, Kansas City. Sure he played records, but he did it in a nonboring way. It was just like a radio show ex- cept it was live. He played requests and had dedications. There was a dance contest and the winners were Don Mur- dock and Ann Million. They each received a free album. Towards the end the students formed two lines with boys on one side and girls on the other, and had a soul train. Having a disc-jockey was really something new at Rock Port, and by the reaction of most students, they really liked it. Bottom Right: Maralee and Willie boogie. IIB Kathy gets with it. Crown Bearers Girls enjoy the dance. Coronation kiss Dan runs out of steam.
