In Appreciation Preparing has been the key word in the teaching lives of these two ladies, Mrs, Viola Nixon has prepared her eager sixth graders to accept the responsibilities of junior high and high school life. Mrs. Phyllis Fay then took over by preparing students to face the trials of the world of business. Mrs, Nixon came to teach at Rock Port elementary school in 1960. In her fourteen years here Mrs. Nixon has taught one of the sixth grade classes. Mrs. Nixon started her teaching career in a rural school in 1929, She taught all of the grades in the one room country school house for nine years. She stopped teaching for a time to take care of her family. Then in 1960 she came to the Rock Port school system. Mrs, Nixon commented on a snow storm that oc- curred during her rural school teaching days, She said that there were fifteen foot snow drifts all around the school- house, Classes for Mrs, Nixon's students were held here at Rock Port High School for one month, Teaching, Mrs, Nixon said, was my childhood dreaml' She fulfilled this dream by graduating from Fairfax High School and by at- tending Tarkio College and Northwest Missouri State Teachers College. Mrs, Nixon said by retiring she will have more time to enjoy her family, Mrs, Nixon has pre- pared many of us to accept our responsibilities and meet our goals. She has taught Bookkeeping I and II, Shorthand, and Publica- tions. Mrs, Fay obtained her B.A. in education from Tar- kio College. After her graduation from college she worked in the world of business. Nine of Mrs. E'ay's ten years with- in the school system she supervised the paper and annual staff, She said, l remember how terribly green I was with the first yearbook, I had never seen a layout, let alone composing one. As annuals of the past show she wasn't green for long. Mrs, Fay was also a freshman and junior sponsor, As a teacher, Mrs. Fay remembered how girls were prone to cry over their grades, She also remembered how the bats would invade the math room about once a year, Mrs, Fay, like Mrs. Nixon, is retiring. She said she will now have more time to become involved in organiza- tional work, Also she wants to have more time to sew, knit and play bridge. Mrs, Fay commented, All of these experiences were great and I wouldn't take a million dol- lars for any one of them. To these two ladies we of Rock Port High School say, Thank you!
