Eric Miller All in a Yea,r's Time l During the 1973-1974 school year, we experienced things that we will not forget or that are characteristic of this year only, The football homecoming bed race , the flu epidemic that forced the school to close its doors for a week, a winter for- mal rather than a Christmas ball, basketball homecoming on a Tuesday night with only a boys' game, and mini -classes are all events that set this past school year off from the others in our minds. In Appreciation Preparing has been the key word in the teaching lives of these two ladies, Mrs, Viola Nixon has prepared her eager sixth graders to accept the responsibilities of junior high and high school life. Mrs. Phyllis Fay then took over by preparing students to face the trials of the world of business. Mrs, Nixon came to teach at Rock Port elementary school in 1960. In her fourteen years here Mrs. Nixon has taught one of the sixth grade classes. Mrs. Nixon started her teaching career in a rural school in 1929, She taught all of the grades in the one room country school house for nine years. She stopped teaching for a time to take care of her family. Then in 1960 she came to the Rock Port school system. Mrs, Nixon commented on a snow storm that oc- curred during her rural school teaching days, She said that there were fifteen foot snow drifts all around the school- house, Classes for Mrs, Nixon's students were held here at Rock Port High School for one month, Teaching, Mrs, Nixon said, was my childhood dreaml' She fulfilled this dream by graduating from Fairfax High School and by at- tending Tarkio College and Northwest Missouri State Teachers College. Mrs, Nixon said by retiring she will have more time to enjoy her family, Mrs, Nixon has pre- pared many of us to accept our responsibilities and meet our goals. She has taught Bookkeeping I and II, Shorthand, and Publica- tions. Mrs, Fay obtained her B.A. in education from Tar- kio College. After her graduation from college she worked in the world of business. Nine of Mrs. E'ay's ten years with- in the school system she supervised the paper and annual staff, She said, l remember how terribly green I was with the first yearbook, I had never seen a layout, let alone composing one. As annuals of the past show she wasn't green for long. Mrs, Fay was also a freshman and junior sponsor, As a teacher, Mrs. Fay remembered how girls were prone to cry over their grades, She also remembered how the bats would invade the math room about once a year, Mrs, Fay, like Mrs. Nixon, is retiring. She said she will now have more time to become involved in organiza- tional work, Also she wants to have more time to sew, knit and play bridge. Mrs, Fay commented, All of these experiences were great and I wouldn't take a million dol- lars for any one of them. To these two ladies we of Rock Port High School say, Thank you! Faculty A Working Board Of Education The Board of Education for Rock Port R-II consists of six members who are elected by the residents of the Rock Port School Dis- trict, These six people are the backbone of our school's system. They make the de- cisions that make our school run, Board members are from left to right above: Pres- ident Bill Stoner, Tim Wessler, Mrs, Bill Corken, Don Mobley, Stan Stubblefield, and Vice-President Charlee Garst, Mr. Stan Stubblefield makes his decision, School Board discusses new policies. ,,....I ai, il KVI, S Law Mr. Frank Rybnick, Superintendent and his Secretary Mrs. Jen- nie Howell. Mr. Gerald Shienman, Principal and his secretary Mrs. Kathy Bogenreif. Administration The administration at Rock Port had a busy year. A- long with the usual winter difficulties, things like snowdays, the administration had such things as call- ing off school because of the fuel shortage and flu plague to worry about. Do they wonder what next year will bring? Mr. Steve Scamman, Administrative Assistant and CO E Director. Mrs. Shirley Hendrix, Grade School secretary, Left: Mrs. Wilma Grubb, Grade School Principal. Language Arts And Drama Among the new faces at Rock Port this year was the Jun- ior-Senior Language Arts, Speech and Drama teacher Miss Rebecca Jones. She even gave her students a thrill at Christmas by returning from vacation with a new name, Mrs. Christy. Her students learned things like Sherw0od's and Kevin's pantomime, various facts about Edgar Allen Poe, and Speech and drama class participat- ed in speech contest in Maryville. Mrs. Barbara Marquart was a more familiar face. Though she has had some rough students in the past, she will testify that she can always have rougher ones in the future. 1...-W This is serious! , Q. ,Q-new ,nf fav .s'v.v:.m4 N ls that so? Queen Donna Haer and King Sherwood Duhon Caplng the Queen The 1974 Basketball Homecoming will probably be long remembered, not only by the participants, but by all the students as well. 1974 was the year of the flu epidemic and by missing a week of school and the scheduled Homecoming game, the girl's basketball season was officially over before Homecoming had taken place. But even if the girls didn't get to play in the A. and B, Boy's game with Tarkio which was designated as Homecoming, 1974 was another exciting Homecoming year, Immediately following the game, coronation was held and Home- coming Queen and King for this year were Donna Haer and Sherwood Duhon. Following Coronation, a sock hop was held because the band had been cancelled along with the week of school, The court is pic- tured above, left to right, Robert Patrick, Marlene Walter, Chris Johnson, Kevin Cohen, Phil Graves, Kim Burke, Sherwood Duhon, Donna Haer, Gary Bogenreif, Jill Wanamaker, Susan Carpenter, Reed Martin, Linda Omohondro, Gayla Patrick, Shawn Mulvania and on the left are crown bearers Binky Minter and Whitney Tudor. Due to a schedule conflict, the school was unable to have a Christmas ball as planned. The student council bounced back from this disappointment with plans for a winter ball. It too, took a lot of planning and work. The council did not simply plan school events. It took a new interest in what was happening in and around the school. Several meetings were devoted to school con- cerns. This was to help the council members better ful- fill the responsibilities as student representatives. The pep club attends all football and basketball games and when the Blue Jays get behind the pep club yells a little louder. This year a new thing was added to pep clubg the spirit stick, Two girls, who yelled the loudest, were given the spirit stick to take to the game. The top picture shows the pep club officers. They used waste baskets, coolers, buckets, and anything else that held water, After two exhausting days of fun, the class returned to Rock Port with many memories in their minds, The last five days of the school year proved to be an interest- ing and exciting experience for the students and teachers of Rock Port High-School. During these days mini classes were held, A committee of teachers designed a program consisting of hobby, sport and public concern subjects. Some of the favor- ites were bowling, hunting and camping, death, tennis, candle making, dance, fencing, bachelor cooking, history of the movies, ping pong, and model rockets, The classes were conducted in a relaxed manner, Students and teachers communicated on a different level. Also, junior high and high school students participated in the same classes. Everyone agreed that the experiment called Mini classes was a great success. 17 ini-Classes at Rock Port K Q1 K 3 -- 4.-. If the an- swer to that question is Yes in your mind, congratulations! If it is set that as your goal for next year. There's a lot to learn all in a year's time. lvN0vv , L .
