1980 - successful season for Rock: The 1980 Varsity Football Team started the season off fast with a win over Iowa powerhouse, Dav¬ enport Central. After dropping the next two out of three, the Rocks put together a tremen¬ dous 3 gome winning streak. This streak i ncluded a homecoming win over league favorite Moline. A late-season loss to a cham¬ pionship Galesburg team nudged the Rocks out of o state play-off berth. Cited by Head Coach Hugh John¬ son for excellent effort all season were: running backs Morgan Smith and Mike Darby; quarter¬ back Mitch Martinez; receiver Mi¬ chael Country Johnson; line¬ backer Arnold Barnett; nose guard Mark Resler; safety Bob Love; and linemen Roman Bates, Tom Foster, and Pat McCleary.
