Homecoming 11 12 The 1980-81 WATCHTOWER staff set up a day for the Happy Joe ' s hot air balloon to come to Rocky for some pictures for the yearbook. We contacted Mr. Al Fenster- busch, owner of several Happy Joes ' ; he agreed to bring two balloons as a favor to the yearbook. The day was warm and sunny, and we were excited about get¬ ting pictures of the school and the cam¬ pus from the air. The wind was rough though, making it difficult to hold down and control the balloon. Our big hang-up It was arranged for a counselor, (Mrs. Pierce ' ) and Ron Chappell, a photographer from Adolphi Studio, to go up in the balloon with the pilot, for a trip ... actually, wherever the wind took them. The wind caused such a problem with keeping the balloon down, that the ropes were let go from the ground, and the wind took the balloon and all its pas¬ sengers right into the light standard at the west side of the stadium. The basket landed in a tree next to the tower, making it somewhat easier for the people to get down, and safely at that. This unfortunate accident was quite an experience and needless to say, we got our pictures! 13 Selling yearbooks on Western Day seems to be funny for Patty Huisman. These girls ride Into the homecoming pa¬ rade. Competition seems to be the name of the game for this girls ' gym class The homecoming assembly brings out tal¬ ent and excitement from the student body. 14 Student Life A cold football game means a warm blanket for these two band members. Court members Lori Siegert. Marvin Mandel. and Diane Reynolds, find it easier to ride in the homecoming parade. A familiar site for many is the boats on the Mississippi River Spanning the river is the Cen¬ tennial bridge. Coach Smith. 44 Girls ' Gymnastics The Rocky girls ' gymnastic team made fan¬ tastic improvement again this year under second year coach Fred Friedrichson and new assistant coach Jim Smith. This years ' team was Rock ' s best according to the coach. The team was lead by seniors Tina Sanders, Vicki Bowker, and Lori Strom. Freshmen Angie Flollenbeck and Nancy LeWarne added strength to the squad in many events and show promise of brillant futures. We had so many girls that were stronger this year that it was really difficult to pick the top four v ho would represent us at District, Sectionals, and State. It was difficult picking the best from our team when we had such good performers as Angie Dasso, Dawn Quimby. Lisa Bowker, Brenda Suarez, and others , said Friedrichson. Sometimes only a tenth of a point separated many of our own team members. Senior Gymnasts are Lori Strom, Vickie Bowker, and Tina Sanders. Sophomore Dawn Quimby shows her skills on the mat. Freshman Angie Hollenback perfecting her bar rou¬ tine Top gymnast, senior Tina Sand¬ ers, holds a pose in her floor ex¬ ercise. Girl ' s Gymnastics 45 Lettermen lead Rocky tracksters Row 1: T. Last year. Coach Kim Faust started with a ju¬ nior infield, and this year they are senio rs and more skilled. With the potential and talent of this squad, Rocky ' s softball team should go far in the season and through the State tournament. The team last year finished with a 22-3 record, winning regionals, sec¬ tionals and half-way through super¬ sectionals. Rocky ended up in the sweet-sixteen category. NEELY Editor, The Argus: Last Wednesday brought tears to my eyes when I heard of the death of one of my teachers, Mrs. Annie Neely, Annie was not only a great teacher but inspired me and other students to set and try for goals as a student as well as in the years to come. Annie Neely had a God-given talent not only in the classroom but outside as well. Annie wasn ' t my hardest teacher nor my easiest, but she was the kind of teacher you wished all the teachers would be like. I think The Argus said it right in its editorial page headline on August 4, It read, “So long, Annie Neely — you ' ll be missed . Annie, your students and your former teachers love you and miss you. Annie, your friends and neighbors love and miss you. Annie, your husband and family love you and miss you. Annie, you know that I really miss you and I really love you, I know that there will never be a teacher like Mrs. Annie Neely again. MATTHEW T. LOFGREN ' reprint from Rock Island Argus. We may never pass this way again ' We may never pass this way again ... singers Seals and Crofts summed up the school year in the title of that song, We finish the 1980-81 school year with happy memories of sharing, learning and growing together, We may not re-live this, but we shall go on in our lives as individuals who are proud to say I went to Rock Island High School. We would like to dedicate the closing of this annual to our super adviser, Eleanor Conrad. She not only instructed superior journalism, she became a special friend to all her staff members for the past 12 years. Thank you Mrs. Conrad for one more great year.
