First year runners, a great success Girls Cross Country team consists of: ROW 1: B Plechaty, K. Young, K. Sphear, S. Gottwalt. ROW 2: M. Bibee, S. Robinson, R. Dahlin, J. Mulvcy, G. Smith and Coach Wilson. Two Seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and three fresh¬ men girls participated on this years Girls Cross Country team, the first in the history of Rock Island High School. Kewanee was the first to fall to the Rocks in dual meet competition and several other teams finished behind the Rocks in the Gene- seo Invitational and District meets. The girls showed much improvement and gained valu¬ able experience during this ini¬ tial season. Coach Wilson pre¬ dicts that his team will be strongly competitive next year. The 1979 Cross Country squad enjoyed a successful season, winning the Dis¬ trict title, placing second at the Sec¬ tional meet, and representing the school for the second consecutive year at the State meet. The Varsity won its second straight Western Big Six title, while the Frosh-Sophs earned their 4th consecutive conference title. The Var¬ sity ' s 8-0 dual meet record was the first undefeated season in over 10 years. ROW ONE: T. Taylor, B Smith, B Smith B. Cus tafson, B. Gottwalt, T Long ROW TWO S. Rob¬ ertson, D. Newberry, T Taylor, E. Nunn, T Brown, J. Birrell, and Coach John Coolidge. Coach Coolidge takes time to give his men a few words of wisdom. A satisfied smile from the coach keeps his team running hard. Senior Bob Smith strives for another victory.
