October 5 was the day chosen to celebrate the birth of our stadium. In 1929, before the stadium was built, the place where it stands now was a cow pasture where a brick yard had once been. Rocky ' s first game was against Grant high school of Cedar Rapids. The Rocks won with a score of 6-0. The stadium was built in eleven months, and holds 14,000 spectators. The field is the largest high school athletic stadium in the state of Illinois. The students of Rock Island High School, as well as the faculty members and citizens of the Quad Cities have grown to honor and respect our stadium. 50 Years Of Pride 3 The week of 1979-80 homecoming was one of memories, and good ' ole fashioned fun. Class assignmen ts were pushed aside for homecoming enthusiasm. For the ones who didn ' t participate physically, spectat¬ ing was sufficient satisfaction. A Volkswa- gon race, egg toss, wagon race, and jello eating contest were events that the stu¬ dent body and faculty enjoyed during the week. 50 years of homecoming fun Rocky students push for a victory in the Volkswagon race. Jeff Robb devotes his concentration to a raw egg in the egg toss. Chris Iverson manages to grasp the egg safely. 6 Homecoming L 4 This was the second year for the jello-eating contest. Many students participated, and at the homecoming assembly, the two final contes¬ tants competed for the final slurp down. The returning champi¬ on, senior Nick Pappas, raced sophomore, Bill Smith. Bill Smith proved to be the fastest slurper at Rocky. Enthusiastic Rocky Students enjoy the Volkswagen race as a different outlook on school activities. Nancy Weeks puts on a sad face in her character as one of Rocky ' s homecoming clowns. Homecoming 7 The Homecoming Court of 1979-1980 is from left to right: Liz Romeo, Jim Coster, Lisa Motz, Mike Long, Cathy Newcomb, Queen; Liz Anderson, King; Brad Bawman, Regina Black, Dean Armstrong, Debbie Calex, and Bill Tingle. Missing from picture is Craig Allison. The floats from top to bottom belong to: the senior class, sopho¬ more class, and junior class. The winning float this year was the freshmen float, a combined effort of Hast and West campus. 8 Homecoming And the fun goes on Mary Kuenning looks forward to the homecoming activities. Kathi Kean, Cindy Baker, Debbie Schluter, and Greg Piehl participate in the little red wagon race. Homecoming 9 The girls ' powderpuff game was senior girls against junior girls. This game once again proved to be a success. The senior team won with the score being 7-0. Some of the more comic minded male students dressed and por¬ trayed the part of cheerleaders. The coaches of the two teams es¬ pecially enjoyed the affair. They were involved in togetherness, or team work during the activity. Liz Anderson is being crowned home¬ coming queen by last year ' s queen, Mary Love. Bill Tingle and his band perform for the homecoming assembly. Students strive for success 10 Homecoming ■• 1 We all wonder where education may lead us, especially high school. It ' s not just the books and term papers; it isn ' t the finals we live for, it ' s the social aspect of it. It ' s people of all sizes, problems and chal¬ lenges of all kinds. Some day, maybe not for a long while, we will see the purpose and appreciate the importance of our lives at the Rock. The frustration turns to relief, the tears turn to laughter, as life at the Rock is experienced. 50 Years Of Pride 11 Hard work and determination best describe Rocky students. There are times when friends can talk and have fun. The most important thing is that they can grow in the community as a unique individual. Remembering yesterday 12 50 Years Of Pride Students at the Rock strive to finish at the top. Struggling through the day, working hard at night, and cramming for final exams at the end of semesters is extremely familiar to Rocky students. At the end, a mark is made and the countdown goes on to finish high school. Some may further their education, and others will get jobs, but all will remember their days at Rock Island high school. Ylva Bremberg, a foreign exchange student from Sweden, enjoys her American Science class. Doug Miers and Cathy Voss show concern in the powder puff game. 50 Years Of Pride 13 14 50 Years Of Pride 50 Years Of Pride 1! Reaching for tomorrow Rocky students gather to watch home¬ coming events. President Jimmy Carter visits the Quad- cities on the Delta Queen. A sophomore takes her frustrations out on her locker. 16 50 Years Of Pride Athlrt Running Back Eric Reed gets some good leadblocking from Guard Tom Gannon. In the words of Hugh Johnson, head varsity football coach, the 79 season was a “GOOD SEASON at 6-3. The Rocks started off slow with an opening loss to Davenport Central, 27-2, but over the next four games the Rocks offense literally exploded to score 130 points against their opponents, while the Rock defense held the opposing score to a total of 48 points. The 79 Varsity Team had quite a few Stand-Out players over the season, ACTUALLY THE ENTIRE TEAM, but as a yearbook staff sometimes has to do, we can only mention a few of them; Tom Gannon-Best Blocker, Most Improved; Greg Piehl-Best Defensive Player; En¬ rique Diaz-Best Team Man; the Tri-Captains-; Craig Allison, Greg Piehl, Enrique Diaz; Eric Reed-Most Valu¬ able. It was a real show of total committment to the team and the sport. We gave away valuable points to the other teams because we didn ' t have a large enough squad, and sickness and in¬ juries plagued us all year. What does the future hold? Not only with their swimming ability, but also with their team leadership, which is just as important. The swimmers relied on their 200-yard medley relay, and their 400-yard freestyle relay teams to rack up the points. Coach Johnstone feels that these two relay squads could fare well in the state competition, along with a few individuals from the squad. This season, along with the three seniors, the Rocky swimmers were led by underclassmen Joe Brewett, Matt Lohfgren, Tab Smith, Rob Humphrey, and Ted Niemann. In the light-weight classes this year, the wres¬ tling Rocks lacked experience as well as depth, which played a major part in some of the team ' s setbacks this year. The middle and upper weight class matches were dominated by the Rocky squad. Starting with the 132 pound weight class, featuring Ri¬ chie Sheley and continuing through Stanley Sir Death Reed at the 185 level. Other grapplers in the dominated classes in¬ clude Nick Pappas at 138 pounds (most of the time), Kerry Jones wrestling at the 145 pound level, handling the chores at 155 was Enrique Diaz. Lead by three return¬ ing lettermen and new coach Dale Stover, the Rocks brought their season record up to 3-8. Mental endurance and self dis¬ cipline are two of the most im¬ portant factors a golfer must have in order to succeed. This year ' s golfers proved that they had what it takes to be winners. The main factor that held the team back this year was a lack of experience. Only one member of the team had played more than two years. Led by Jodi Schoeck, who cap¬ tured an overall 4th Place victo¬ ry, and Kim Boeye, who held 6th place, the Rocks captured 4th place in the Western Big 6 Conference. Despite the inap¬ propriate weather at District, the girls managed to shoot their best nine hole team score of the season. After losing a Sectional bid at District to East Moline by one stroke, two of the girls made it to Sectionals. These two put forth a lot of ef¬ fort, and it showed as Jodi Schoeck came in 10th place, and Kim Boeye ended up 15th. She was an inspiration. For a teacher, there is no greater honor than to hear a former student say of her that teacher changed my life.. .she helped me to become what I am . Miss Bjorkman changed lives for the better.. she insisted that students be what they could be that they be proud of themselves and their accomplishments. Just as parents live on in their children, so teachers live on in their students. While we are distressed that we will not see her again in the classrooms and halls, we who knew her, joyfully remember what she has given us. We can show other students, other teachers, other friends the positive outlook that she instilled in us. We can share with others the special knowledge she had in food service, using what she taught us to become better at our work. We can value, as she did, each person we meet.. .by encouraging people to be the best within their ability and to be proud of that ability. We will keep her memory with us always. Being a senior at Rock Island High means knowing the feeling of achievement, readi¬ ness and pride. The three years are filled with memories of winning football teams and basketball teams, having more National Merit Scholarship win¬ ners year after year than other area schools, and all the pride of saying, I am part of the Rock! We feel prepared to step out into our fu- tures-whether we have gone through col¬ lege prep or occupational training. The world outside holds many new opportuni¬ ties and challenges for which we are pre¬ pared. We have achieved an end and gained a beginning through our memories and our preparations at the Rock. As Sophomores, on the first part of our journey through the years ahead, we expect much of high school life. When we began the school year, we had many mixed emotions, and every new experience brought on frustration and curiousity. The sophomore year at Rock Island High School has many beginnings and each student must find a place in his new school. We then may take a moment to realize that a piece of the rock is finally ours. We struggled from the beginning for some things, and others were taken with ease. We remembered being interrupted in class with the constant noise of install¬ ing the fire doors, halfway through the school year. We rushed to class, trying to get used to the new ' one tardy-one detention ' rule. As we slid into class seconds after the bell stopped ringing, only to run into the teacher holding the atten¬ dance sheet with a circle around our names, and a heart-warming smile, we were ready to turn in our books. The senior ' alarm clock ' trick brought excitement for awhile, but ended in disappointment when we were let out earlier than expected because of a faulty water main, on the day before Thanksgiving vacation. We were hit with new rules not only from our Principal, but from our Presi¬ dent. President Carter requested that all thermostats be set at 65, this brought shivers and a few blankets to school. Every senior will recall the confusion of their Homecoming, but they made the best of it, and had a good time anyway. The class of ' 80 experienced having the Homecoming dance at the Rock for the first year. This provided for a new at¬ mosphere. Rock Island High School is not just a part of history tut part of tomorrow. Throueh the years, Rocky has created individuals of pride. When anyone en¬ tered Rock Island High School, they at¬ tracted a gift of creativity, and hones¬ ty. 214 50 Years Of Pride Alan Alverez proudly displays his workmanship in the grandfather clock he constructed for his shop class. The day was fresh and new. Spring was in the air. The warm breeze danced through the windows. A hidden excitement filled every¬ one. They wanted to get outside and enjoy the birth of spring, but they were temporarily contained. Even the building burst with ex¬ citement. Windows and doors op¬ erated again, at times, remaining open all day. The clouds wrapped the sun like an opaque candy wrapper, caus¬ ing overcast, slight depression and some disappointment. Then the wrapper dissolved, the announce¬ ment of sighs, the arrival of smiles, and the smooth, melting sensa¬ tion of the yellow and orange can¬ dy was swallowed by the eyes of nature. The flag, used, worn, yet respect¬ ed, swayed in the wind. It would see another spring. Only one thing remains, and will endure forever-the memory which thrives in the students and remains in the soul of the school. 50 Years Of Pride 215 The ivy-covered entrance of the Old Main high school made it one of the more impressive sights of Rock Island. The high school consisted of two build¬ ings. Most classes were held in Old Main, with additional classes in the Manual Arts building, located at 21st street and 6th avenue. In 1937, the present high school was constructed. Old Main then became Central Junior High. The Manual Arts building became the Administration building, with some classrooms. On Sunday, December 11th, 1949, at 7 p.m., fire destroyed Old Main. This was the third high school in 91 years to be destroyed by fire. The fire rivaled many football games as an attraction. Over twenty thousand people gathered to watch the building being engulfed in flames. Destroyed in the fire were: student re¬ cords, photographs of previous gradu¬ ating classes, as well as books and other equipment. Cost of replacing the school was estimated at approximately one million dollars. After the fire, junior high students were transferred to the senior high school until the reconstruction of Cen¬ tral Junior High was completed. 216 50 Years Of Pride fcr f ' Jiff When Rock Island senior high school was construct¬ ed in 1937, it was one of the most outstanding high schools in the state. The building consisted of gener¬ al classrooms, a fine gymnasium, a large, well- equipped library, and auditorium seating 1600, and a Little Theater for smaller productions. The Auditorium and the Little Theater comprised probably the most exceptional unit of Rock Island ' s new high school building. The Little Theater was decorated and fashioned after the modern theaters of the day. The walls of the auditorium along the bottom were lined with oriental wood veneer, of logs for which were imported from Australia. The Southwest wing was added in 1958. It featured a 6,000 capacity fieldhouse, which was the most out¬ standing in the state at the time. A swimming pool, the Home Economics, Driver Education, and Foreign Language departments were included in these wings, as well as the student lounge area. In 1967, the four-story Northwest wing was added. It contained an excellent band complex, classrooms, and well-equipped Science and Art departments. The Vo-Tech building was built in 1972. 50 Years Of Pride 217 Rock Island Public Schools Stadium - 1929-1980 In 1929, the Rock Island Public Schools stadium was completed. Today it is unusual for a high school to have a bowl-type stadium, but in 1929, it was way ahead of its time. Shorty Almquist, former athletic director of Rock Island high school, who took part in the ground-break¬ ing ceremonies, said, I thought the people had rocks in their heads at the time, building a big stadium like that, so far out of the residential area; it didn ' t seem too smart to me. But the people responsible proved to be pretty far-seeing. It ' s been a wonderful facility for R.I.H.S and it will be for years to come. When the stadium was finished, the football players had to travel from downtown, where the old school was located to practice every night. Students usually walked or rode their bicycles. It was quite a jaunt for athletes to travel every evening for practice, and being as far out of the way as it was from homes, it was somewhat of a trip for spectators also. Rock Island won their first game in the new stadium against Cedar Rapids Grant High School, 6-0. The stadium was built to hold 14,000 fans. Contractors designed a complex draining system, capable of acco¬ modating floods or extremely dry weather, preventing improper drainage and cracking of the track. Rocky ' s stadium is surrounded with fur trees that have grown with years, and are now a natural, dark green fence around the north end of the bowl. Anyone who has attended a football game at the Rock knows to go to the bottom of the stadium when the wind gets rough, and the night wears on, making it colder. As you start to get warmer, you begin to sympa¬ thize with the bare-legged flag girls from the band. The stadium, named the Rock Island Public Schools Stadium in a contest held by the ARGUS, has provided for the school system for 50 years, not only for football but for track and field meets, lantern parades, and an¬ nual commencement exercises. Costing $175,000, and holding the title of one of the finest in the country, the Rocky stadium has served as a spectacular investment. 218 50 Years Of Pride!
