The Marching Rocks perform at one of the afternoon games. Sophomore cheerleader, Rhonda Car- pentier, boosts school spirit at a pep assembly. Every high school student, at one time or another, feels lost and confused. We wander aimlessly and wonder about our future. We search for the road in life which we feel will lead us to our own “pot of gold.” Naturally, not every student seeks out the same path; some choose college while others pursue a career. As many find. Rock Island High School accomodates all types of people. In Search Of ... 5 . .. and the rocks go marching along Two Rocky students find time to just sit and relax. Mindy Nessler looks back on a memorable year. The color guard starts the band out on the right foot. Many changes occurred in rules and regulations this year. One example is the parking lot. Students were able to rent a reserved parking space, enabling the city to control the lots. Students were subject to a $5 fine for abusing these privileges. Security tightened its belt this year too. Hall passes were required and In- School Suspension (ISS) became an everyday term. The average student thinks of Rocky in many ways, but probably never like this. Hey, sophomores. “How do you feel?” In Search Of . . 7 This year’s winning float was Rocky East’s contribution. Whale ' M. Other floats (at left) were the Senior ' s We Will Rock You; Rocky Wests’ Rock ' EM Sock ' EM; AFS’ It’s a Small World; The Sophomore’s Rock-N-Roll ' EM; and below is the Ju¬ nior ' s Jail House Rock. The bonfire and pep rally which followed the Powder Puff game, boosted the spirits of the Rocks. Presented at the assembly were Queen Mary Love and King Charley Banks and their court. The St. Ambrose Jazz Band provided a part of the enter¬ tainment. Reading from left to right in pairs is the 1978-79 Homecoming Royalty Court: M B. Rice: M. Moore; K. Layer; T. Brooks; K. Caras; M. Barry Ferm ‘drums up’ some spirit during the school song. Homecoming activities this year ranged from eating jello like a pig and playing in the mud like one. Homecoming 9 Mr. Murphy and Mr. Paradiso took time off from the office to coach the victori¬ ous senior powder puff football team. Denise McDaniel boogies down at the Homecoming Dance. The parade followed its usual route through downtown Rock Island. Pleasant weather fa¬ vored the Rocks that day. Although good weather was on our side, fate was not, as we lost to Moline in the Homecom¬ ing game. 10 Homecoming Senior Powder Puff cheerleaders Dave Sebben, John Moyes, Mike Miers and Don Gerber helped get Homecoming activities started. Doug Franz ‘pigs-out ' on jello during the jello-eating contest at the assem¬ bly. As these participants prove, ‘Volkswa- gon does it again.’ Kelly Ward ‘mud-dles’ through the ag¬ ony of defeat. Rock Island’s gridders went into the 1978-1979 football campaign with a subsequent change in its game schedule. For the first time in the history of Rock Island High some of the school’s games were played in the afternoon. The difference in time schedule seemed to improve the Rocks play; as the team won three and lost merely one of the day games. When asked about the day game controversy, head coach Hugh Johnson remarked that “it really made no difference to the team except the players liked the visability difference much more.” Todd Miller splits the uprights. In the remainder of the season the Rocks played to a three and three record setting them on top of the Quad-City Metro Conference, and taking them to a state play-off game versus a tough East St. Louis squad. Although the Rocks had nu¬ merous fan support, the grid- ders fell 35-0 ending a remark¬ able season for Hugh John¬ son’s squad. The year’s most valuable play¬ er award went to Terry Brooks who set a Quad-City Metro Conference record by rushing for 286 yards against Gales¬ burg. Most Improved went to lineman Leon Baugh; with best blocker going to Lonnie Pittard. Mike Moore captured best team man and one of the co¬ captains with the other being Terry Brooks. 22 Varsity Football scoreboard Rl 38 LaSalle-Peru 20 Rl 13 Dubuque 21 Rl 14 Davenport West 20 Rl 27 Alleman 24 (ovt.) The loss of 112 pounder Allen Speed due to a temporary paralyzing neck injury at the Palantme Tournament together with returning letterman Enrique Diaz leav¬ ing were key factors making the grapplers fall in the losing column. Despite the set backs. Rocky had three outstanding wrestlers. They are Todd Griffith. Don Gerber, and Randy Swan¬ son. Griffith, with a 14 wins and 1 loss record, was selected as 3rd in the state of Illinois by the “Word” news. Swan¬ son along with Griffith were nominated as prep of the week for back to back pins over Quincy and Galesburg. Se¬ lected as the outstanding wrestler was Don Gerber. Heavyweight Roman Bates was tabbed as an outstanding wrestler on the sophomore levpl. Leading Rocky ' s wrestlers, pictured with their coach, are seniors Todd Grif¬ fith. The Rocks lacked experience with only two re¬ turning lettermen, Randy Wright and Tim Ward, left to lead the team under new coach Don Resler. Resler, who previously led Sycamore High School to many winning years in the past, could not lead the team over the hill to victory. Lack of per¬ sonnel let sophomores Wayne Steele and Blake Wortham be moved to the varsity as start¬ ers. The team ' s leadership came from Randy Wright, Tim Ward. Physically, gymnastics can improve co-ordination, agility, balance, and flexibility; it can improve strength and tone up every group of muscles. It is one of the best sports for general body fitness. Mental¬ ly, it can improve self-confidence. One of the greatest rewards in gymnastics is the feeling of having mastered one’s fears through self- discipline in meeting and overcoming the challenge of mastering and controlling the entire body. Throughout its execution, a gymnastic exer¬ cise become art form in motion. Rhythm and elegance, lightness and amplitude, and balance and co-ordination are a part of ev¬ ery move a gymnast makes whether she is performing on the uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, or vault. The combina¬ tion of moves create an overall theme or mood of the routine. Proper gymnastic form and originality add to the general impression of ease as the gymnast executes a difficult stunt. With returning lettermen Randy Gunter on the mound, Todd Miller at first, Ri¬ chie Beam at second, Tony Perkins at the shortstop posi¬ tion, all-conference Jack Knox at third, and Doug Franz behind the plate the Rocks could have no holes in the infield. With an outfield composed of Mike Moore, Andre Thornton, and Randy Swanson, many teams could not get the ball to hit the outfield grass. Head coach Jack Carroll was pleased with so many returning lettermen to lead the diamond- men to many, many Rocky vic¬ tories. The varsity baseball coaches are Thom McGreevey, Gary Bender. Sophomores 129 a philosophy of education The Rock Island School sys¬ tem, supported by the dedi¬ cated people on these two pages, follows a basic philos¬ ophy of education. This phi- losphy states that schools exist to benefit a community by edu¬ cating its youth. A student must accept the responsibility for setting his own goals and directing his efforts toward these goals. A school system must provide instruction so a student will aquire skills and learning to help him find a con¬ tributing place in society. Spe¬ cifically, a student graduating from RIHS should be able to communicate through speak¬ ing and through writing, be able to understand our political pro¬ cess, be able to understand and utilize principles of the chemical, physical and biologi¬ cal sciences and be able to ei¬ ther earn a living or go on to further education. To meet these goals, our school must involve citizens and staff in de¬ cisions concerning the school system and must give the staff authority to produce an effec¬ tive program, but also hold them responsible for meeting these objectives. Academics 133 Headed by Clarence McCombs, the staff of eighteen custodians work round-the-clock to keep the high school building operating smoothly. Aside from the regular tasks: cleaning windows, waxing floors, emptying waste¬ baskets, the custodians provide indispensable ser¬ vice to both students and teachers. If a locker sticks, a pipe breaks, or a window jams, a custodian will quickly get things back to normal. Our cafeteria headed by Dottie Brutsche, serves 1,500 students a day. Cafeteria employees offer meals to satisfy any appe¬ tite. A well-balanced hot lunch includes both milk and a dessert, often fresh baked in Rocky’s kitch¬ ens. Sandwich lines serve “fast-food” items: hot dogs, french fries, and chocolate shakes, at a reasonable price. For des¬ sert, the milk bar supplies ice cream bars and hos¬ tess treats. Dieters can choose a chef’s salad, fresh fruit, flavored yo¬ gurt and skimmed milk. Even with open lunch, most students stay at school because the cafe¬ teria has what they want to eat. 134 Academics good housekeeping The high schools custodians are Row 1: Ron Schmook, John Webster, Phil Caudill, Row 2: Forrest Workman. Where in the past penalties were usually lenient, this year detentions and In School Suspension (I.S.S.) are taken quite seriously. Security officers, complete with walkie-talkies, patrol the rooms and the halls with an eagle’s eye. Where students once had seven unexcused absences, now they have none, and all absences must be ac¬ counted for by a signed note and a phone call. The discipline at RIHS, al¬ though stricter, is much fairer, and stu¬ dents agree the school runs much smoother. Kay Ackerson and C.R Bradford take a note from a student. Academics 135 and gladly would he learn Our high school is a wild-and-crazy” place. At times, with the hustle and bustle of a part-time job, the school dances, a love life, basketball games and school clubs it seems that we lose touch with the purpose of high school. Somewhere, sandwiched between pushing and flirting and talking and gossiping, we find those fifty-five minutes that make up the very essence of what-we-are-here-for. We are here to watch, to listen and to follow our teachers-all of them have something valuable to offer. They possess not only some form of education, not only that wisdom born of experience but also a desire to teach - if they did not posses these qualities, they would not be here. Because they are people with distinct personalities, not only do their fields of knowledge vary - so do their methods and their effectiveness. We often have trouble seeing how our teachers are working for our benefit, but they are. We should be happy to have these teachers, who have gone through much of the same as we are going through now, trying to help us accept their gift of learning. To entertain his students. Iowa and he currently is completing the requirements for his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. As his first year as principal ends, Mr. Murphy deserves praise for a job well done. The new discipline policy, because it has been consistent, practical and strict, keeps the school’s operations running much smoother. The End 215 — and it snowed, and snowed l snowed, and Snow, which practically covered the bike racks, closed down school for two days. Record amounts of heavy snowfall crippled the midwest and with it, the Quad Cities, this winter. The blizzard of Jan¬ uary ’79 will live in our hearts and minds forever. Numerous athletic events were postponed and in some cases canceled because of the heavy snow. School, which had pre¬ viously been extended two days longer for sophomores and juniors, was rescheduled for the original closing date. 216 The End in search of . . . Through the school year we search for several new things. We search for questions, for answers, for beginnings, and for ends. Graduation ends the search for seniors, yet it starts a new one too. Graduates are faced with many decisions. Whether to go to work, to school, to move out, or to stay home. But as students search during their high school years, they search for one ultimate goal: their “pot of gold” at the end of the rainbow. That “pot of gold” holds something different for each stu¬ dent. Juniors hit the mid-point of their search. They have decisions, too, as far as college and work is con¬ cerned. Sophomores have just begun their search. For them the end of the rainbow seems far away. Although not everyone reaches his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, high school leaves every student with memories to cher¬ ish.
