And the questions shatters the mind ' s ar¬ mor, crystallizing words into action. Not daring to live, nor daring to learn, with open awareness, the book the days are writing. We find, what we can ' t af¬ ford to forget that today is a progress of activities and friends and enriching experiences. Mindful of this, we go on with A Smile ... A Shadow ... A Lifetime. The memories of graduation will always linger on. A Smile ... A Shadow ... A Lifetime. 18 Athletics Athletics Ray Lomas is ' ' ready and wait¬ ing ' ' to catch that football. Cheering students on to victory are Nina Bingmon, Cindy Moore, and Mary Love. The Homecoming game provides anticipation for cheerleader Tere¬ sa Carlson. This year the Rock Island cheerleading program is different than it has been in the past. Twelve cheer¬ leaders were chosen to represent football, wres¬ tling, boys and girls bas¬ ketball, girls swimming, and one cross country meet. All twelve girls cheered for the football season, but because of lack of space in the field house, for basketball games the girls were divided into two squads of six. Either the Red or Gold squad cheer alternatly at every game, home or away. Their sponsor this year, making her debut as new supervi¬ sor is Mrs. Judy Fox. The Cheerleaders are: ROW ONE: ley, J. Bleyaert, T. Carlson. C. Moore, K. Layer, C. Taubc, ROW TWO: B. Bonsai], M. Rice, N. Bingaman, B. Fisher, T. Dai- M. Love, and J. Rohr. 60 Cheerleading Go, Fight, Win The Sophomore Cheerleaders are: ROW ONE: left to right M. Suarez, L. Romeo, L. Cartwright, and C. Williamson. ROW TWO: P. Lundy, J. Ray, K. Rossow, and D. Morrison. ROW THREE: S. Handley, C. Chesling, C. Balch, andB. Carlson The Rock Island Sopho¬ more Cheerleaders were selected to keep our school spirit together and help teams to victories. The girls worked hard and spent many hours develop¬ ing and learning new cheers. They too are split into Red and Gold squads as the varsity. Senate spon¬ sored a festive Homecom¬ ing week including the bed race, pickle-eating con¬ test and Homecoming pa¬ rade. The Homecoming dance topped off the fun- filled week. Senate spon¬ sored an old-fashioned, knee-slapping square dance to raise money and collected canned goods for needy families on Thanks¬ giving. Senators also held a homeroom Christmas collection to gather food and money for more needy families at Christmas time. The second annual Rocky-Alleman Christman dance was another senate success. Senators also worked hard in undertak¬ ing the Presidential Class¬ room project and the very successful Student Day. In February Rocky ' s sopho¬ more senators pulled to¬ gether a great Sweet¬ heart Swirl , and Rocky ' s junior senators ended the year well with their Ju¬ nior-Senior Prom. Senate 161 This year ' s Watchtower Staff members smiled through thick and thin. Al¬ though they had shadows under their eyes from working long nights com¬ pleting deadlines the members managed always to be cheerful. Each staff member worked hard to put together a yearbook that would last a lifetime in the memory of their fellow classmates. Debbie Myers is always there to give helpful advice to Sue Ed¬ wards.
